Soccer Fever: Zim Celebrities pick their Favourite World Cup Teams

FIFA World Cup, the biggest sporting carnival in the world, kick-started yesterday with a traditional glitzy opening ceremony in Moscow.

Football enthusiasts around the world are making special preparations to cheer for their favourite teams and Zim Celebrities are also in on the fun.

The biggest worldwide event held in Vladimir Putin’s Russia began with a contest between the two worst teams in the competition on paper.

But Russia, who were without a victory in seven games, exceeded expectations as they dismantled a hopeless Saudi Arabia defence to win 5-0.

In 2014, 3.2 billion people watched the tournament on TV and football fans have already started adjusting their schedules to enjoy the grand event.

Special screenings are also being organised in sports bars and restaurants in most Zimbabwean cities.

We asked a few of our celebrities to find out which teams they were rooting for. Here is what they had to say.

Tinotenda Kadewere Warriors and Djurgårdens IF (Sweden) Midfielder

Tinotenda Kadewere

I’m running with Brazil in this edition of the world cup and key players to watch out for are the likes of Neymar, Salah if he gets to play considering his injured, Kane as he is my favourite striker and Ronaldo as my all time favourite player

Conrad Mwanawashe – (Actor) Humba in ZTV drama series Wenera

Am rooting for Brazil. I like their style of play, flair and skill. For Brazil, it’s not about power but skill. They have a reputation to repair remember they were beaten 1-7 by Germany in Brazil. So it’s a do or die for the Selecao.

‘Humba’ on set in Wenera

Though recovering from injury, watch out for Neymar. I expect him to shine. Philippe Coutinho is in brilliant form for Barcelona and I’m sure he will be worth watching.

Conrad plays Humba in Wenera, the most educated in the Extension area where he resides at the Blue House. Humba is a workers’ committee chairperson at Wenera Diamonds

Miss V Candy – TV host and Star FM Radio Presenter

My pick is and has always been Germany not just because they are the defending champions.

Their fighting spirit and team effort is brilliant, Portugal has Ronaldo, Brazil has Neymar, Argentina has Messi: Germany has a team.

Muller for the goals, he is an outstanding player and goal scorer as well as engine for the team.

P.s all the best to Senegal: Mane for the goals. I’m low-key rooting for Ronaldo

Cindy – Award winning Pop Singer

I am running with Portugal mainly because of the winning spirit they displayed during the Euro 2016 final.

I remember how an injured Ronaldo ‘took over’ the coaching role to inspire his teammates. If they go into the filed with the mood of 2016 I think they will do well

Africa! I am going with Nigeria expecting a win on Croatia and Iceland and a loss to Argentina.

And the Players to look out for obviously Victor Moses, Obi Mikel and Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester
