Founder of Mushamukadzi Charity Organisation Mrs Marry Chiwenga Wednesday morning added her voice to the growing concerns about the plight of cancer patients.
Mrs Chiwenga who is also wife to Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga is determined to take the cancer fight beyond just the pink ribbons.
Speaking at the funeral wake of Mrs Mugwisi who was the wife of Zimbabwe Defence Forces Public Relations Director Colonel Mugwisi, she narrated how her organisation tried to assist the deceased until her loss to cancer.
“Our journey together with Mrs Mugwisi began when her daughter (Tatenda)fell ill years ago, I then asked Colonel Mugwisi for our foundation (Mushamukadzi Charity Organisation) to assist with her medical care,” she said.
“We went with her to various places myself and her (now deceased) mother and I would encourage Tatenda that she was going to be well and would finish her degree.”
“It pained me greatly when Tatenda passed, that was some years back, but we also were told that another of Colonel Mugwisi’s child succumbed to cancer in South Africa,” she added while addressing mourners at One Commando Regiment.
Mrs Chiwenga said as an organisation Mushamukadzi was concerned about the lack of seriousness given to cancer seeing that it is killing many people.
She said as a country we were not doing enough to fight it.
“I remember coming from the UNWTO I said to Dr Parirenyatwa who was the health minister then and still is, I said to him that it would make sense to split the aids levy with half going to cancer and half to AIDS,” added Mrs Chiwenga.
She believes her proposal fell on deaf ears and that it was not fair to watch others die. Mrs Chiwenga said that she was sure nobody was going to complain if that was implemented since cancer had become a serious scourge.
“Cancer is all about taking your money away, it will take everything that you got in your bank and chew it up, it will make you sell your house, your car and everything that you got, cancer will take away everything from you,” added Mrs Chiwenga.
Mushamukadzi Charity Organisation will hold its annual Gold and Dinner fundraising on 26 May with proceeds going to cancer patients.
