Los Angeles-based rapper Dumisani ‘Draze’ Maraire recently won the prestigious Emmy Award which was handed out at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Northwest annual ceremony.
Draze recently created a track titled ‘I did it for us’ and the song was picked up as the theme song for a morning show on Converge media and because of that song and show they won the Emmy.
He told Zimbuzz: “I have worked really hard for a long time, so it means a lot to be recognized. I stand on the shoulders of so many legends that I want to make proud. I want to make God proud, my family, my parents, and of course my country. When I win I feel like we all win,” he said.
Dumisani is the son of legendary mbira performer Dumisani Maraire and the little brother of Chiwoniso.
For the last few years, he has been writing music for Hollywood television shows and has over 200 placements on TV, film, and commercials.
Dumisani Maraire has also created music for Love & Hip Hop, All American, Inventing Anna, Empire, Who killed Sarah, The masked singer, and several other shows.
He told us about his recent work with his father and the University of Zimbabwe.
“My most recent music video is a song called ‘Born To Win’ the track features a choir that was directed by my father (Dumisani Maraire Sr) at the University of Zim,” he revealed.
“I’m excited because that song was just picked up by a television network as the theme song for a new show. It is groundbreaking to have a show here in America that has a theme song featuring Shona lyrics.
“Little by little we are changing the game. I’m looking forward to doing a lot more of this in the coming years,” he added.
