Green Fuel Fires Coach Rodwell Dhlakama: Was it Justified?

In a surprising turn of events, Green Fuel football club has decided to sack their head coach, Rodwell Dhlakama, along with his first assistant coach, Darlington Dodo.

This move marks the first coaching dismissal of the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

While the team’s recent 3-0 loss to CAPS United undoubtedly played a role in the decision, there are growing speculations that external factors, particularly the discontent of Green Fuel fans, may have influenced the club’s action.

“Green Fuel Football Club has parted ways with head coach Rodwell Dhlakama and assistant coach Darlington Dodo,” the club announced in a statement.

“The mutual separation is with immediate effect and has been influenced by the team’s performance so far in the 2024 season. The separation is in the best interests of Green Fuel Football Club and the coaches.

“The club wishes to express its gratitude to the services provided by the Coach Dhlakama and Coach Dodo for their accomplishment during the 2023 season by steering the team from the real possibility of relegation.

“The club wishes the coaches the best in their next assignments,’’ added the statement.

Coach Rodwell Dhlakama’s Record:

The team’s record under his guidance consisted of two wins, three draws, and three losses. While it may not be an outstanding record, the coach’s overall record does not appear to be abysmal. However, the recent 3-0 loss to CAPS United appears to have been the final straw leading to Dhlakama’s dismissal.

Dhlakama took over the coaching reigns of Green Fuel last season after Bekithemba Ndlovu parted ways with the club following a dismal start that saw them floundering in the relegation places after 8 games.

Faced with the mammoth task of saving the sinking ship, Dhlakama managed to steady the ship and steer Green Fuel to calmer waters, guiding them to a respectable 10th place finish on the log with 45 points.

Following Dhlakama’s dismissal, the responsibility of leading Green Fuel now falls on the shoulders of Innocent Chogugudza, the team’s second assistant coach and goalkeepers coach.

Chogugudza has been appointed interim coach and will take charge of his first game on Sunday against Arenel Movers.
