Zimbabwe Hold Their Nerve to Edge South Korea in a Wet and Fiery Contest

The Zimbabwe Sables wrapped up their Asia tour with a gritty 27-22 victory over South Korea on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Incheon Namdong Asiad Rugby Field.

Despite challenging rainy conditions and a wet surface, the Sables displayed resilience to claim their seventh consecutive win of the year, maintaining coach Pieter Benade’s unbeaten streak as they prepare for the 2027 Rugby World Cup qualifiers.

South Korea put up a strong fight, particularly in the scrums, where they dominated and earned numerous penalties.

The hosts’ fullback, Kim Ki-Min, showcased excellent tactical kicking, consistently pinning the Sables deep in their territory.

Their rush defense also disrupted Zimbabwe’s backline, denying them clean possession and momentum.

Zimbabwe’s lineouts, however, proved reliable, thanks to veteran hooker Matthew Mandioma, who marked his 50th Sables cap with a stellar performance, finding his jumpers with precision.

The Sables began the game in style, with Ian Prior slotting an early penalty in the second minute to open the scoring.

Flanker Tinotenda Mavesera soon crossed the whitewash for the first try, which Prior converted, extending the lead to 10-0.

Vice-captain and eighthman Adrian Burnett then powered over for another try, pushing Zimbabwe to a commanding 17-0 lead.

South Korea responded with a penalty from Kim Ki-Min, followed by a converted try from prop Kang Sun-Hyuk, narrowing the deficit to 17-10 at halftime.

The second half began with another Prior penalty, stretching Zimbabwe’s lead to 20-10.

However, South Korea struck back through scrum-half Lee Gun, who darted over for a converted try.

Zimbabwe regained momentum with a moment of brilliance from utility back Brandon Mudzekenyedzi, who broke the line before setting up Mavesera for his second try, completing a brace.

The hosts refused to back down, as replacement prop Kim Han-Seok bulldozed over for a late try after sustained pressure. South Korea camped in Zimbabwe’s 22 during the dying moments, but the Sables held firm, forcing a knock-on that sealed a hard-fought victory.

This win underscores Zimbabwe’s growing form and determination as they gear up for next year’s crucial qualifiers.
