Delta Beverages has handed over a community borehole in Mabvuku, Harare, fulfilling a pledge made to Scottland FC after the club’s victory in the Castle Lager Challenge Cup.

The borehole, officially handed over on Thursday, is part of Delta Beverages’ community development initiatives, with the beverage company allowing the tournament winners to select a community project of their choice as part of their prize.

Scottland, nicknamed Mabviravira, thrashed Dynamos 5-0 in the February final to lift the 2026 Castle Lager Challenge Cup, earning the opportunity to identify a community that would benefit from the company’s corporate social responsibility programme.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Delta Beverages Lagers General Manager Lucky Nkunzane said the initiative was intended to extend the benefits of football beyond the playing field.

“Through the Castle Lager Challenge Cup, we wanted our champions to extend their victory beyond the football field and into the community they serve,” Nkunzane said.

He said Scottland had been given the opportunity to select a community project, adding that the company was pleased to fulfil its commitment through the provision of the borehole.

Nkunzane said the project demonstrated how sport, business and communities could work together to address local needs.

“This occasion is about more than commissioning a borehole. It demonstrates what can happen when sport, business and community come together for a common purpose, strengthening our communities and building brands that Zimbabweans can be proud of,” he said.

He commended Scottland for choosing a project that directly addresses one of the essential needs of residents.

The Lagers general manager said access to clean water remained an important part of building stronger communities, describing the project as an expression of Castle Lager’s commitment to bringing people together through meaningful initiatives.

Nkunzane also urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining the facility to ensure its long-term benefits.

“The true measure of today will not be the ceremony itself, but whether this borehole continues to serve families and the wider community for many years to come,” he said.

He encouraged the Mabvuku community to protect the facility and ensure it benefits as many households as possible.

The initiative highlights the potential for sporting competitions to generate benefits beyond the game, with corporate partnerships providing opportunities to support community development.
