Alice Chiota cemented her status as Zimbabwe’s leading female pool player on Saturday night, successfully defending her Carling Black Label National Women’s Pool Championship after defeating Diana Kabasa in a thrilling final at Urban Lifestyles Arena in Masvingo.
The 41-year-old Chitungwiza cueist produced a composed performance to retain her national crown, overcoming a strong challenge from Kabasa after the pair split the opening four frames.
With the match delicately poised, Chiota demonstrated the composure that has made her one of the country’s standout players, reeling off three consecutive frames to seal victory and successfully defend the title she won last year.
Her triumph earned her US$2,500 in prize money as well as a new pool table.
The victory marks another milestone in Chiota’s remarkable journey in the sport. After finishing as runner-up in the women’s competition in 2023, she dedicated herself to improving her game, a commitment that has now resulted in back-to-back national championships.
Speaking after her victory, Chiota once again challenged long-held stereotypes surrounding the sport, urging Zimbabweans to change their perception of women who play pool.
“Most people think snooker is for ladies of loose morals, or prostitutes. No, that’s not it,” Chiota said.
“We have church people we play against in this game.”
She also expressed gratitude to tournament sponsors Delta Beverages for investing in the development of pool in Zimbabwe.
“I am very happy. Credit goes to Delta Beverages for organising this kind of tournament, which brings together elite pool players from across the country,” she said.
The Carling Black Label National Pool Championship has grown into one of Zimbabwe’s premier cue sports competitions, attracting the country’s top male and female players while helping to elevate the profile of the game.
In the men’s competition, Stephen Paswani of Bulawayo emerged as the new national champion after defeating 2024 champion Godfrey Masona of Mutare in the final.
Paswani’s victory capped an evening that showcased some of the country’s finest pool talent.
