BET Hip Hop Awards 2024: Kendrick Lamar Takes Home Top Honors

The 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, held in Las Vegas, became Kendrick Lamar’s night as the Compton rapper dominated with eight awards, solidifying his place as one of hip-hop’s greatest talents.

Lamar, who had 11 nominations, walked away victorious in every category he was nominated for, outshining the top nominee, Megan Thee Stallion, who led the night with 12 nods but left empty-handed.

The 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards were distributed on October 8 at Drai’s Beachclub & Nightclub in Las Vegas.

However, the ceremony was not telecast live on any cable network; instead, it aired as a taped event on BET and VH1 on Tuesday, October 15.

Hosted by Fat Joe, the event featured Megan Thee Stallion vying for 12 prizes following the recent release of her self-titled album—her first independent release.

Kendrick Lamar trailed her with 11 nominations after a turbulent year due to his feud with Drake, who was nominated in eight categories.

The former won the top accolades of the night including Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and more.

Performers at the BET Hip Hop Awards included 2 Chainz, GloRilla, Juicy J, Bossman Dlow, Trina, Yung Miami, and more.

At the ceremony, Travis Scott received the I AM Hip Hop Award for changing the course of hip-hop with a series of groundbreaking albums and conversation-starting moves.

Trey Nyoni signs first professional contract with Liverpool FC

Zimbabwean prospect, Trey Nyoni has signed his first professional contract with Liverpool FC.

Nyoni was born in the UK to Zimbabwean parents.

The midfielder, 17, joined the Reds from Leicester City in September 2023.

Nyoni began his time at the club with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s U18s side, making an instant impression with a late winner in a youth Merseyside derby on his home debut.

The England U18 international then progressed to the U21s set-up before making his senior Liverpool debut at the age of 16. Nyoni came on as a substitute as Southampton were beaten in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup at Anfield in February 2024.

After being part of Arne Slot’s squad on the club’s pre-season tour of the USA and scoring in a friendly against Sevilla at Anfield, Nyoni captained the Reds’ U19s in their UEFA Youth League meeting with AC Milan and is now a regular fixture for Barry Lewtas’ U21s.

Earlier this month, he was named on the bench as Slot’s team defeated Bologna in the Champions League.

Cimas Group CEO Calls for Male Breast Cancer Screenings

As October unfolds, marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial conversation is emerging: breast cancer screening is not just a woman’s issue.

Mr. Vuli Ndlovu, Group Chief Executive Officer of Cimas Health Group, has urged men to prioritise breast cancer screenings.

This call to action challenges long-held misconceptions that this disease solely affects women, highlighting the importance of awareness and early detection across all genders.

Mr Ndlovu made the remarks on Friday when Cimas hosted the Cimas Pink-Tober Breast Cancer Breakfast Meeting at their Borrowdale Office in Harare.

“Breast cancer remains a significant health challenge, but early detection can save lives. We are committed to providing accessible health solutions and educating our communities to ensure every woman has the opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment,” Mr Ndlovu said.

“Health experts confirm that men are also at risk of developing breast cancer. While male breast cancer is rare, men, especially older ones, should remain vigilant and get regular check-ups.”

Mr Ndlovu further highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, stating that breast cancer, when detected early, is treatable. He however, notes that if diagnosed at a later stage, cancer can become much more difficult to treat, as it may have already spread to other organs.

The Cimas Pink-Tober Breast Cancer Breakfast Meeting, which brought together cancer patients and survivors to share their personal journeys, is one of the initiatives Cimas has organised as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month commemorations.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed globally every October to raise awareness about the disease.

Doctor Webster Kadzatsa, a specialist oncologist was the guest speaker at the breakfast meeting held under the global theme, “No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone.”

Mr Ndlovu said as part of their commitment to fighting breast cancer, Cimas Health Group is offering free breast cancer screenings for all Cimas members at its clinics across the country, as well as at selected Blue Zone facilities where Cimas clinics are unavailable.

“Cimas Health Group remains committed to tackling cancer and related ailments challenges by offering accessible screening services and promoting education on the importance of early detection for both men and women,” Mr Ndlovu noted.

“Throughout October, Cimas Health Group will be having campaigns aimed at educating the public about breast cancer, the importance of regular screenings, and early diagnosis.”

Mr Ndlovu said Cimas members does not only receive breast cancer screenings during the month of October highlighting that, this service is also available throughout the year.

He said if a Cimas member tests positive, they may be eligible for cancer treatment benefit up to the global limit of their plan, depending on their package and membership duration.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, with around 2.3 million new cases annually. It accounts for one in eight cancer cases among both sexes and a quarter of all cancers in women.

Alarmingly, 70% of breast cancer-related deaths occur in resource-constrained settings.

In response to this global challenge, WHO launched the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) in 2021, aiming to reduce mortality rates by 2.5% annually by 2040, potentially saving 2.5 million lives.

The initiative focuses on three key pillars: health promotion for early detection, timely diagnosis, and comprehensive breast cancer management.

Despite efforts to raise awareness, WHO notes that barriers within health systems and low levels of public knowledge contribute to the underutilisation of early detection services, leading to latestage diagnoses and poor outcomes.

Warriors Secure First Win Under Nees with Narrow Victory Over Namibia

Warriors head coach Michael Nees has secured his first three points since his appointment as Zimbabwe battled to a 1-0 victory over Namibia in the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers, Group J, on matchday three at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Khama Billiat’s penalty in the 34th minute ensured the Warriors reached five points, placing them at the top of the group following two draws against Kenya and Cameroon, who face each other tomorrow.

Udinese’s Jordan Zemura won the penalty after a Namibian defender bundled into him as they both leapt to contest a long ball in the box. Billiat stepped up to take the penalty and scored, albeit with a poor strike by his standards. The keeper guessed correctly, but the ball fortuitously bounced past him.

The match kicked off with Zimbabwe conceding a corner in the 3rd minute from a free kick, which was headed over the bar after a Namibian player outjumped the Zimbabwean defence.

The first clear chance of the game fell to Terrence Dzvukamanja, who skillfully bypassed two Brave Warriors defenders but failed to beat the keeper, who anticipated the play and rushed off his line to block the shot.

Namibia earned their second corner in the 15th minute, signaling their intent for victory, but it was headed clear by Marshal Munetsi.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile was lively in the opening minutes, exploiting Zimbabwe’s left side. However, there was an injury scare when Munetsi suffered a crude tackle in midfield, requiring medical attention.

With Zimbabwe somewhat weakened in midfield, Namibia came close to equalizing in the 42nd minute, but their effort struck the upright.

The Warriors appeared disjointed, with the midfield playing too far apart, a situation exacerbated by Munetsi’s injury as he struggled towards the end of the first half. Captain Marvellous Nakamba, returning to the squad after a long injury layoff, formed a midfield trio with Andy Rinomhota and Munetsi.

Namibia resumed after the break in search of an equalizer and had the first shot on target in the 50th minute, a header from Shalulile that went straight into the arms of Washington Arubi.

Three minutes later, Zimbabwe’s Daniel Musendami struck the upright following a beautiful pass from Munetsi.

In the 69th minute, Michael Nees made a double substitution, replacing Musendami and Dzvukamanja with Prince Dube and Douglas Mapfumo.

Despite scoring the penalty, Billiat had a largely underwhelming performance and was replaced by Hachiro, while Nakamba made way for Divine Lunga as Zimbabwe sought to consolidate their slim lead.

Douglas Mapfumo had a chance to seal the game in the 90th minute but chose to shoot instead of passing to the open Zemura. His shot was tipped over the bar for a corner kick.

Washington Arubi delivered a man-of-the-match performance, making numerous saves to ensure the Warriors collected all three points.

Football player found dead in swimming pool

Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has died at the age of 31, Super League Greece has announced.

Greece international Baldock signed for Panathinaikos this summer after a seven-year spell at Bramall Lane, making his debut in August.

The full-back, who was not named in the Greece squad to face England on Thursday, featured in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Olympiacos.

According to reports in Greece, Baldock’s body was at the swimming pool of his house in Glyfada, southern Athens, on Wednesday night.

The conditions of his death remain unclear for now. Police is conducting an investigation.

A Super League Greece statement read: “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

England international and former Sheffield United player Harry Maguire posted “RIP” and a heartbreak emoji alongside an image of Baldock on Instagram.

Northampton, where Baldock had a loan spell in 2011, wrote on X: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31.

“George made five appearances in 2011 before playing for Oxford United and Sheffield United. Sending our sincerest condolences to George’s family and friends.”

Baldock was born in England and started his professional career at MK Dons, where he spent eight years.

After several loan moves to clubs including Tamworth, Oxford United and Northampton, the defender made a permanent move to Sheffield United in 2017.

He would go on to make more than 200 appearances for the Blades – including 83 outings in the Premier League, where he scored two goals and registered six assists – before joining Greek side Panathinaikos this summer.

The defender, capped by the Greek national side on 12 occasions, made four appearances this season across all competitions.

Rhema Bible Church founder Ray McCauley has died

Founder of the Rhema Bible Church South Africa, Ray McCauley, has died aged 75.

“Pastor Ray has gone to be with the Lord peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family and loved ones,” his son said in a statement.

President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his “deep condolences”, adding that Pastor Ray’s death “leaves our deeply spiritual nation bereft of a remarkable leader”.

The Rhema Bible Church has more than 45,000 members and is considered one of the most influential churches in South Africa.

The South African National Christian Forum (SANCF) paid tribute to Mr McCauley, calling him a “an outstanding ecumenical leader”.

“He will be remembered as one of the great Christian leaders in the country,” it said.

South Africa’s former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela also shared a heartfelt message, saying he “stood resolute on matters of integrity in state affairs”.

“I will always remember him as a person who pioneered inclusive worship long before others did,” she said in a statement on X.

Mr McCauley played a key role in the late years of apartheid and spoke out against the racist apartheid regime.

Ramaphosa described Rhema as one of the “largest multiracial churches during apartheid”.

During the Truth and Reconciliation talks, he confessed the shortcomings of white South Africans who “hid behind their so-called spirituality while closing their eyes to the dark events of the apartheid years”.

His church became a pillar of South African society and many high-profile figures like former President Jacob Zumba, members of parliament and sports stars attended services.

At the peak of his influence, he was described as the “high priest of South Africa”, according to the UK’s Independent news site.

Before he became a spiritual leader, Mr McCauley was a bodybuilder and owned gyms.

He took part in the Mr Universe competition in 1974 and came in the top three.

Although he stepped back from active church duties at Rhema in 2022, he preached a sermon at the church a few weeks ago.

He is survived by his widow Zelda, son Joshua by his first wife, and three grandchildren.
