Violent Chegutu Pirates Fans Force Linesmen to Switch Sides

In a tense match between Caps United and Chegutu Pirates at Rufaro Stadium, the assistant referees had to switch sides to calm the violent Chegutu Pirates fan base.

The disruption began when Pirates fans, occupying the Vietnam Stand, started throwing missiles at one of the linesmen.

Fearing for the safety of the match officials, the match was halted for nearly 25 minutes until the decision was made to switch the assistant referees.

Pirates fans were disputing a throw-in decision that went Caps United’s way.

The incident was triggered by William Manondo’s header in the 67th minute, which gave Caps United the lead.

This led to further chaos, with some fights breaking out near the Vietnam Stand, resulting in several hooligans being arrested by the police.

Chegutu Pirates have previously been fined and docked points in their debut Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season due to the violent behaviour of their supporters.

After the lengthy break, the match resumed, and Pirates quickly equalized from a free kick, courtesy of Gift Mwinga. However, William Manondo restored Caps United’s lead in the 93rd minute, silencing the Pirates fans.

This brace marked his seventh league goal of the season, leaving him just one goal behind the top scorer, Evans Katema, who has been in prolific form for Bikita Minerals.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of Caps United.

He will be joined by former Zimbabwe international Dion Ebrahim who is coming in as Assistant Coach.

Sammons, who over the years has done sterling work with South Africa’s high performance programme as well as with several domestic sides, was part of the Proteas technical team as batting consultant between 2021 and 2023.

ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said: “We are delighted to confirm Justin as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team.

“I look forward to the road ahead and I am excited to start working with this talented group of players.”

Drama on ‘The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip – South Africa’

With eight housewives from five different South African ‘The Real Housewives’ franchises, brought together in Jamaica, of course, there is bound to be drama.

Nonku Williams from ‘The Real Housewives of Durban’ has been poking the bear when it comes to Melany Viljoen from ‘The Real Housewives of Pretoria’ on the reality show; enquiring about the allegations about Tammy Taylor Nails and even made accusations that she believes Melany could be in abusive marriage.

As the episodes continue to air and the housewives and viewers binge on all the drama, the Viljoens are not taking the things Nonku has said lightly.

Peet has issued a letter of demand against one of Africa’s longest running housewives, and is suing her for R1 million for defamation of character for alleging that he abuses his wife and that she is in a “cult for one”.

“Peet and Mel from ‘The Real Housewives of Pretoria’ are claiming damages of R 1 million from a glamorous Durban housewife because she claimed Peet abused his wife,” reported Rapport on Sunday.

In a joint statement, Peet argued that the only abuse that Mel has to endure is from carrying all those diamonds around and how he flew her business class to Jamaica as production could only afford economy tickets and how he took her to Miami before she started filming the reality show and also after.

Nonku also claimed that she believes Peet runs Mel‘s life and is responsible for her decision not to have kids. In their statement, Peet refuted the allegation and defended their choice not to have children.

“Mel has literally no family left, nobody to assist should anything happen to me. We are not living in 1955. Women are not worth less when children are not what they desire. I am taken aback by the baby-shaming on the show.”

Nonku has yet to publicly address the lawsuit, but Mel has shared the news on her Instagram for all to see.

Three tough groups headline 2024 COSAFA Cup

Hosts South Africa and Botswana will lock horns yet again in the most played fixture in HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Cup history when the prestigious regional tournament is staged from June 26-July 7.

The draw for the 12 teams pitted the neighbours together for the ninth COSAFA Cup tournament in a row, with Botswana yet to win outright in any of their 12 previous meetings.

Mozambique and Eswatini make up the other sides in what is sure to be a hotly contested Group A.

Record seven-time winners Zambia will be looking to become the first team to win three COSAFA Cup titles in a row and also face a fascinating set of fixtures in Group B, which puts them against old foes Zimbabwe and Comoros. The fourth team in that pool will be confirmed in due course.

Last year’s runners-up Lesotho are in Group C along with three-time winners Angola, 2015 champions Namibia and Seychelles.

The pool games will be played from June 26-July 3, with the semifinals on July 5 and the final and third-place play-off to be staged two days later.

The format ensures each country will play a minimum of three games up to a maximum of five over the course of the competition. It also allows for an extra days’ rest between most pool games, a boost for player welfare.

The 22 previous editions of the COSAFA Cup have seen some great performances and incredible games that have been written into the folklore of Southern African football, but only five nations can claim to have lifted the coveted trophy.

Zambia went back-to-back in 2023 and now sit along at the top of the list of most titles with seven. That is one more than Zimbabwe, with South Africa (five), Angola (three) and Namibia (one) the only other teams to claim regional glory.

Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana and Lesotho have all been finalists twice, but ended up on the losing side on both occasions. Two-time guest nation Senegal are the only other national to reach the decider but lost to South Africa in 2021.

Khama’s Potential Warriors Return Fuels Speculation After Tapera Talks

Khama Billiat’s return to the Zimbabwe senior men’s national football team has been a subject of speculation for a long time now.

Yet the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs forward has not publicly spoken about the subject ever since he retired from international football.

Judging from Khama’s previous performances as well as his Sartuday display for Yadah against Manica Diamonds, it’s clear that the Warriors need Khama more than Khama needs them.

Khama had an impressive outing at the Heart Stadium, netting the equalizer for Yadah as well.

But the speculation about his return has now been amplified following his brief chat with interim Warriors head coach Jairos Tapera after the one-all draw match at the Heart Stadium in a Castle Larger Premier Soccer League match.

Khama and Tapera seemed to be having a serious conversation, which began on the pitch after the game and continued into the changing rooms.

With the COSAFA tournament on the horizon, perhaps Tapera is considering having Khama as one of the senior players in the team.

Whatever the two discussed, only they know, but it is every football fan’s hope that Khama considers coming out of retirement and serving his country once again, something he has done with distinction.

Zimbabwe Cricket secures land to develop new cricket ground in Mutare

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) is set to develop a multi-purpose cricket facility in Mutare’s high-density suburb of Dangamvura.

This comes after the national cricket body successfully applied for a piece of land in the Manicaland capital.

ZC and the City of Mutare recently signed a lease agreement for the allocated plot measuring 19 hectares.

The development will include a playing field, practice nets and spectator stands.

Commenting after the lease agreement was signed off, ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni said: “Cricket thrives on a robust infrastructure that supports the development of talent from grassroots levels to professional leagues.

“We are therefore pleased and excited to have secured a piece of land for the purposes of developing a multi-purpose facility in Mutare that will spur the growth of the game in the city and in the Manicaland province as a whole.”

Zimbabwe will co-host the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2026 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027 alongside Namibia and South Africa and the Dangamvura facility will be considered as a possible match or training venue for the global events.

“ZC’s priority is to ensure we have in our country stadiums or facilities that meet the minimum standards set out by the International Cricket Council to host global events,” Makoni said.

“But long after the World Cup tournaments are gone, these facilities will be available for use by local cricket clubs and schools and that will be fantastic for the future of our game.”
