Samp Army, Qalandars neck and neck as Zim Afro T10 battle hots up

Regis Chakabva batted through the Harare Hurricanes innings to score 44 not out off 22 balls and made the winning hit against Durban Qalandars with two balls in hand in Sunday’s first Zim Afro T10 match at Harare Sports Club.

The Qalandars batted on winning the toss and lost two early wickets to Mohammad Nabi from Afghanistan.

However, the New Zealander Tim Seifert batted through the innings for 71 not out off 31 balls, which included six sixes and four fours.

Nick Welch gave the innings the final impetus with 22 not out off nine balls to take the final score to 126 for three wickets.

Nabi had the fine bowling figures of two for nine in his two overs.

The Hurricanes also lost two quick wickets, but some brilliant hitting by the Indian Irfan Pathan (37 off 14 balls) put them ahead of the clock while Chakabva steered them home.

Harare Hurricanes won by five wickets

Durban Qalandars – 126-3 in 10 overs (Tim Seifert 71*, Nick Welch 22*, Asif Ali 18; Mohammad Nabi 2/9, Samit Patel 1/17)

Harare Hurricanes – 127-5 in 9.4 overs (Regis Chakabva 44*, Irfan Pathan 37, Mohammad Nabi 19; Mohammad Amir 2/23, Tendai Chatara 1/17, George Linde 1/23)

Johannesburg Buffaloes – 96-5 in 10 overs (Mohammed Hafeez 23, Mudshfiqur Rahim 16, Yusuf Pathan 15; Karim Janat 2/25, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 1/17, Peter Hatzoglou 1/18)

Cape Town Samp Army – 97-3 in 7.4 overs (Tadiwanashe Marumani 54, Rahmanullah Gurbaz 35, Matthew Breetzke 1*; Noor Ahmad 2/26)

Cape Town Samp Army won by seven wickets

A dazzling innings of 54 off only 24 balls from Tadiwanashe Marumani led the way for an easy seven-wicket victory for Cape Town Samp Army over Johannesburg Buffaloes in the second Zim Afro T10 match at Harare Sports Club on Sunday.

Put in to bat, the Buffaloes suffered from the problem of losing early wickets, four going down for 42.

Their captain, the Pakistani Mohammad Hafeez, tried to rally his team with a good 23, but they could only muster a score of 95 for five wickets in their 10 overs.

Marumani soon made light of this in an opening partnership of 86 in six overs and a ball with Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan, and when he was caught his team was certain of victory.

Another nine balls, though costing two wickets, saw the Samp Army home with two overs and two balls in hand.

Durban Qalandars – 122-6 in 10 overs (Tim Seifert 44, Andre Fletcher 34, Hazratullah Zazai 21; Tymal Mills 2/24, Sikandar Raza 1/18, Patrick Dooley 1/27)

Bulawayo Braves – 97-7 in 10 overs (Ashton Turner 32, Patrick Dooley 11*, Sikandar Raza 11; Brad Evans 3/20, Tendai Chatara 2/19, Mohammad Amir 1/14)

Durban Qalandars won by 25 runs

Brad Evans played a major role in the Durban Qalandars’ 25-run victory over Bulawayo Braves in the last Zim Afro T10 match of the day at Harare Sports Club.

When the Qalandars batted first, Tim Seifert’s 44 off 14 balls assured them of a good score, and with André Fletcher of the West Indies backing him up with 34 off 15, the total reached 122 for six.

The Braves failed to get off to a good start in their reply, and after Evans in his two overs took their first three wickets at a personal cost of 20 runs, the task was almost impossible.

When Sikandar Raza was out for 11 to Tendai Chatara, who took two wickets in four balls, the Braves were doomed and limped to 97 for seven after their 20 overs, despite 32 from the Australian Ashton Turner.

“It comes with an extremely heavy and broken heart, that I have to announce I am walking away from my marriage,” she revealed.

“I will not get into the details that have made me reach this decision,” she stated, adding, “But I want you to know the decision has been a very difficult one. Walking away from both my husband and my best friend.”

Born Racer: The Story of Olympic Champion Chad le Clos Premieres on SuperSport

The untold story of Chad le Clos, South Africa’s Olympic swimming champion, will premiere in a riveting documentary on SuperSport on Friday, June 30, 2023.

For over 10 years Le Clos has held us in his thrall, his gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics giving rise to a remarkable career marked by stunning successes, fame and, inevitably, failure too.

The story of champion swimmer Chad Le Clos is thus perfect for SuperSport’s ongoing passion for storytelling, adding to a vibrant and varied documentary content slate that goes to the heart of many of our heroes.

The documentary – named ‘Born Racer’ and set to be aired on Friday 30 June at 20:00 CAT on SuperSport Variety 1. will take viewers inside the world of elite swimming, the ups and downs that come with it, as well as redemption. It’s about the challenges, triumphs and extraordinary sacrifices that come with dedicating oneself to sport.

The big appeal of this film is its rawness. We often see Le Clos at his most vulnerable, and he freely gives expression to his self-doubt and disappointment.

These aren’t behaviours normally on show with champion athletes, but Le Clos, to his credit, doesn’t shy away from his failures or his inability to cope.

Despite being able to lay claim to being the continent’s greatest swimmer of all time, his journey hasn’t been smooth. His rivalry with the great Michael Phelps, his famous defeat of the GOAT and his life in the fast lane are all examined under the director’s eye.

Inevitably, Le Clos’ family feature strongly throughout, both because they are all so influential, but also because they anchor him when things get loose, or he struggles.

They are there, too, for early morning training sessions in pools across the country and they are there when the gun goes off at international meets.

Yet the twist comes as his career begins to wind down. His mental struggles are writ large. He’s a superstar of his sport, and yet he loses his mojo and can’t find answers. At times it can be harrowing to watch, partly because it’s unusual to see a big name so exposed, partly because you have to empathise.

“I wanted to tell an honest story about my passion for swimming and the obstacles I faced,” said le Clos. “I also wanted to shed light on the sacrifices and struggles that professional athletes like myself go through, and to also show what redemption looks like when you have a strong support structure like family. I want to inspire others to self-examine and consider what true happiness means.”

‘Born Racer’ is a pleasant departure from the usual form. The scrutiny is intense, so too the emotion and energy. It’s a welcome glance into a champion’s secret world.

Zimbabwe Triumphs Over West Indies in Thrilling Encounter, Secures Super 6 Spot

Zimbabwe booked their super six spot by beating West Indies by 35 runs in a nail-biting encounter played in front of a packed Harare Sports Club.

Chevrons’ man of the moment, Sikandar Raza, picked up his second consecutive Player of the Match award, scoring 68 runs off 58 balls and taking 2 wickets for 36.

West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first, aiming to capitalize on the morning dew, which offered some assistance to the seam bowlers.

The visitors’ first breakthrough came in the 15th over when Keemo Paul trapped Joylord Gumbie lbw for 26 runs, leaving Zimbabwe at 63/1.

Wessly Madhevere, who has been struggling for form lately, had a brief stay at the crease, perishing with just two runs on the board off the bowling of Akeal Hosein, caught by Ku Carty.

Wickets kept falling at regular intervals for Zimbabwe, with Craig Ervine departing for 47 runs and Sean Williams for 23 runs, respectively.

The 5th-wicket partnership of Raza and Ryan Burl managed to stabilize things in the middle overs, scoring 87 runs. Burl eventually lost his wicket for 50 runs lbw to Hosein.

The Chevrons’ tail failed to wag as they were eventually bowled out for 268 runs in the 49th over, with one ball to spare.

Paul was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/61.

Zimbabwe’s seamers were extremely disciplined, not leaking many runs and making the chase difficult for West Indies. Blessings Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava picked up two wickets apiece, with both their economy rates averaging 4.00.

Tendai Chatara was in inspired form, picking up 3 crucial wickets, including the scalp of Roston Chase for 44 runs at the death. Chase was the danger man and was striking the ball superbly.

West Indies eventually fell short, suffering their first defeat of the tournament.

Zimbabwe Dominates World Cup Qualifier Opener, Defeating Nepal by 8 Wickets

In a sensational start to their 2023 World Cup qualifier campaign, Zimbabwe exhibited their dominance with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Nepal at the Harare Sports Club Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, aiming to exploit the typically bowling-friendly morning pitch conditions.

The wicket turned out to be unexpectedly flat, providing an opportunity that Nepal capitalised on with an impressive opening partnership of 171 runs between Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh.

However, their flourishing stand was finally halted by Wellington Masakadza, who dismissed the dangerous Bhurtel for a commendable 99 runs and Sheikh for a solid 66 runs, leaving Nepal at 174-2.

Zimbabwe’s pace bowler, Richard Ngarava, came to the fore and managed to curtail Nepal’s scoring rate in the latter part of the innings, claiming four crucial wickets for just 43 runs with an impressive economy rate of 4.77.

Nepal eventually posted a total of 290/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

Zimbabwe’s run chase encountered a few early hiccups as opening batsman Joylord Gumbie departed for 25 runs, falling victim to Kami Sompal’s lbw trap. Despite the setback, Wessly Madhevere failed to convert his promising start and was dismissed for 32.

However, the third-wicket partnership between skipper Craig Ervine and Sean Williams proved to be pivotal for the Chevrons as they steered their team to victory.

The duo crafted a magnificent 164-run partnership, with both batsmen reaching centuries.

Williams smashed a scintillating 102 runs off just 70 balls. Ervine showcased his class with a magnificent 121-run knock, guiding Zimbabwe to a resounding triumph.

Zimbabwe is set to face the Netherlands on Tuesday, June 20th, as they strive to secure their second victory in the qualifier tournament.
