Zimbabwe crumble in final T20I as Namibia seal historic series win

Zimbabwe suffered a 32-run defeat at the hands of Namibia in the fifth and final T20I match at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday, giving the tourists an historic series victory.

Going into the match level at two wins apiece, the hosts won the toss and decided to put the visitors in to bat first.

For three overs Namibia made a strong showing, with Craig Williams and Michael van Lingen rattling up 31 runs to give them a cracking start.

But then van Lingen, who hit two fours and scored 12 off seven balls, was caught at the wicket by Richmond Mutumbami off Brad Evans, and Namibia were never to have it so good again.

Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton stayed in with Williams to score nine off 10 balls, 17 runs coming off the next three overs before he was bowled by Jongwe for nine.

Jongwe then struck a major blow when he had Gerhard Erasmus, the hero of Sunday’s match, caught at the wicket second ball without scoring, and wickets continued to fall steadily.

Williams played a superb innings, but four middle-order batters came and went for single-figure scores – two wickets to Jongwe and two to Sikandar Raza.

Jan Frylinck then came in at 84 for five in the 12th over and played with more stability.

At 97, Williams’ fine innings came to an end at 48 with a run-out, Donald Tiripano fielding the ball, after he had faced 39 balls and hit five fours.

Frylinck was then stumped off Wessly Madhevere for 15 off 21 balls, and in the 17th over Namibia were in deep trouble at 106 for eight.

The bowlers could not finish off the innings, though, as Ruben Trumpelmann hit out boldly, while Bernard Scholtz held his end up in support.

Trumpelmann scored 19 not out off 14 balls, with a six and a four, while the partnership added 21 vital runs.

The innings finished at 127 for eight, giving Zimbabwe a target they should be able to reach.

There were two wickets each to Jongwe, Raza and Madhevere, all for less than 20 runs, which was commendable bowling.

Zimbabwe began the chase comfortably enough, with Madhevere and Innocent Kaia scoring 23 together for the first wicket.

However, when Madhevere fell lbw to Frylinck for 10 in the fourth over, disaster struck.

The same bowler bowled out the new man, Regis Chakabva, with his next delivery, and then Kaia was run out for 12.

Three wickets had gone down in four runs, and Zimbabwe were reeling at 27 for three.

The experience of Raza and the cool head of Tony Munyonga now had to repair the damage and put Zimbabwe on the right path again.

For the most part they scored in singles, waiting for the bad balls to look for boundaries.

They added 26 in 4.3 overs before Namibia broke through again, and Raza was caught at the wicket off Ben Shikongo for 12 – 53 for four in the ninth over.

One run later, Mutumbami was bowled by Scholtz, and Zimbabwe were now in serious trouble at 54 for five.

Tiripano batted usefully for three overs, as he and Munyonga scored mainly in singles, until he was caught off Erasmus for 11 off 15 balls, the score now being 72 for six in the 13th over.

Jongwe now joined Munyonga, but the bowling and fielding was too tight for them to score easily, and the run rate rose steadily to more than 10 an over.

Effectively the last nail was hammered into the home side’s coffin when Munyonga was bowled by Wiese after 17 overs for a fine fighting innings of 28 off 31 balls – the only Zimbabwe batter to score more than 12 runs in the match.

The score was now 88 for seven, with 40 runs needed off the final three overs.

Jongwe was then run out for seven, Brad Evans bowled by Erasmus for two, and finally Brandon Mavuta was caught off Trumpelmann to complete the rout for 95 runs with five balls left unbowled.

All six bowlers used took at least one wicket, with Frylinck and Erasmus picking up two.

This is Namibia’s first T20I series victory against a Full Member.

Namibia – 127-8 in 20 overs (Craig Williams 48, Ruben Trumpelmann 19*, Jan Frylinck 15; Wessly Madhevere 2/15, Luke Jongwe 2/16, Sikandar Raza 2/18)

Zimbabwe – 95 all out in 19.1 overs (Tony Munyonga 28, Innocent Kaia 12, Sikandar Raza 12; Gerhard Erasmus 2/9, Jan Frylinck 2/25, Ben Shikongo 1/9)

Namibia won by 32 runs

Zimbabwe kicked out of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

The Warriors of Zimbabwe together with Kenya will not participate in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Confederation of African Football has confirmed.

This comes after the Sports and Recreation Commission failed to reinstate the ZIFA board in time before the start of the games as demanded by FIFA.

The two countries had been included in the draw for the African football showpiece on the condition that their suspension must be lifted two weeks before their first match.

“As a consequence of having failed to have their suspensions by Fifa set aside, Caf has confirmed that both Kenya and Zimbabwe will not participate in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 qualifiers,” a statement on the Caf website read.

“The qualifiers will kick off on the first day of June 2022.

“Caf had included them in the official draw earlier in April 2022 on the condition that the suspension must be lifted two weeks before their first match day.

“Kenya and Zimbabwe, suspended for political interference, have not yet met the criteria required by the Fifa congress as a prerequisite for lifting their suspension.”

Because of the suspension, the following will apply:

–    The two associations; Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)will be considered losers and eliminated from the competition.

–   Groups C and K will be composed only of three teams and the order of the matches will be maintained in accordance with the match schedule that has been communicated to the teams after the draw.

–  The first and runner-up teams of those groups will qualify to the final tournament.

Chitungwiza-based Gladiators clinch NPL championship

Gladiators are the 2021/22 National Premier League (NPL) champions, the Chitungwiza-based side secured the coveted silverware after their decisive match against title rivals Westside was washed out at Mutare Sports Club on Sunday.

In a race that went all the way to the wire, a win for Westside would have given them the championship, provided Takashinga Patriots 1 failed to get maximum points elsewhere.

And if Takashinga Patriots 1 themselves were to successfully defend their NPL title, they also needed an outright victory and a defeat for Gladiators.

But in an anti-climax end to the season, the Gladiators-Westside match was abandoned, while Takashinga Patriots 1 suffered a 56-run loss at the hands of Lions at Old Hararians on Sunday.

This saw Gladiators finishing at the top of the standings with 81 points, followed by Westside in second place with 75 points and Takashinga Patriots 1 third with 70 points.

In the end, it was a well-deserved championship for Gladiators, the only side not to lose a match in the NPL this season – they won seven, tied one and shared the spoils in the last of their nine fixtures which could not be played due to rain.

Yet the battle was not just about the title.

With the top six teams securing their places in the NPL T20 Blast and the top eight qualifying for the Zim Domestic T10, there was everything to play for elsewhere in the final round of matches over the weekend.

Harare Kings beat Amakhosi by 36 runs at Kwekwe Sports Club, Takashinga Patriots 2 thumped Great Zimbabwe Patriots by 66 runs at Old Hararians, while Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC) defeated Nortonians by 58 runs at BAC.

There is only one more match to be played in the NPL, between Amakhosi and Nortonians, but the top eight places in the elite club competition are already decided after Sunday’s games.

Gladiators, Westside, Takashinga Patriots 1, Lions, BAC and Takashinga Patriots 2 will feature in the NPL T20 Blast scheduled to start next week.

They will then be joined in the Zim Domestic T10 tournament by Great Zimbabwe Patriots and Harare Kings.

Dough Major involved in a “Silly” Mixture

Award-winning hip hop artist Dough Major has been gaining momentum in the hip hop game which is contributing to his relevance with the new school artists through his authentic shebeen rap sound.

Dough Major this time around has decided to spice up the game via his upcoming single titled “KA SONG KARI SILLY” featuring Vannel.

In an interview with Zimbuzz Entertainment in Harare recently Dough Major revealed there is little chance of slowing down his momentum in the game because of his fans.

“You would be surprised the song is about a guy being silly because of a woman. Vannel and I try to keep a woman interested by saying the most random stuff. Some lines might even offend her but we consolidate all that by reminding her that ey, you make me silly babe,” he chuckled.

The artistic composure revealed by the artists came through from the deep hilarious artwork thought by Dilly1Buck that would capture the eye because of the mixture of graphic work of 2 Zimbabwe’s well-known brands intriguing a certain imagination in the mind of how the track would sound like.

“The artwork was made by Dilly1Buck. I made him listen to the song and told him the name of the song and he came up with that art. I guess that’s what the song made him feel, a Super Chibuku bottle with a Mazoe sticker, what could be sillier than that,” added Dough Major.

Dough Major has been climbing up the ladder each and every time he releases a project, his award-winning project Shebeen Rap Volume 2 scooped the Best Album at the 2021 Zim Hip Hop Awards proving his lyrical skills on various catchy tracks such as “Early Early”

Poor batting sinks Zimbabwe as Namibia level T20I series

Zimbabwe – 122-8 in 20 overs (Milton Shumba 29, Tony Munyonga 23, Donald Tiripano 18; David Wiese 3/27, Jan Frylinck 2/17, Ruben Trumpelmann 1/14)

Namibia – 124-2 in 18 overs (Craig Williams 62*, Gerhard Erasmus 36, David Wiese 13*; Luke Jongwe 1/16, Tendai Chatara 1/17)

Namibia won by eight wickets

A batting collapse by Zimbabwe’s top order condemned the team to an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Namibia in the second Twenty20 International (T20I) match between the sides at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

The hosts again won the toss and decided to bat.

In the first over, Regis Chakabva hit a four, but was then bowled by David Wiese with the score on 10.

Wessly Madhevere was aggressive, but did not last long as he was run out for seven after facing four balls.

Craig Ervine could not get going and had taken 17 balls to score only five when he was caught off Wiese to make the score 23 for three in the sixth over.

Donald Tiripano, promoted in the order, and Sikandar Raza briefly fought back, but after 10 overs the score was only 46.

To make matters worse, both were then quickly dismissed, Raza bowled by Ruben Trumpelmann for 11 and Tiripano another run-out victim for 18, to make the score 49 for five.

The two youngsters, Milton Shumba and Tony Munyonga, then got together for the best stand of the innings, attacking with discretion and putting on 46 in just under six overs before Wiese returned to bowl Munyonga for 23, scored off 21 balls.

Ryan Burl came in, but again had too little time to make his big hitting count, except for one six.

Shumba batted until the final over, when he was bowled by Jan Frylinck for the highest score of 29, scored off 26 balls.

Frylinck then had Luke Jongwe, hitting out desperately, caught first ball, and the innings ended at 122 for eight wickets, with Burl not out on 16.

Wiese had done a superb job with the ball for Namibia, taking three vital wickets in his four overs for 27 runs, while Frylinck had two for 17.

However, Trumpelmann was remarkably economical, taking his wicket for only 14 runs in his four overs.

Zimbabwe now needed an outstanding bowling and fielding performance to pull the match out of the fire.

Craig Williams and Divan la Cock began cautiously with just three singles in the first two overs, but in the third Williams hit Shumba for two successive fours to start the victory charge.

They put on 26 together, but in the sixth over Jongwe broke through by having la Cock, who never got going this time, caught by Munyonga for nine off 17 balls in the sixth over.

Gerhard Erasmus soon settled in, hitting a six off Shumba, and after 10 overs had been bowled the score was 66 for one.

He scored freely to make 36 off 26 balls before he was bowled out by Tendai Chatara, by which time the score had reached 91 for two in the 14th over.

Williams soon reached his 50 off 46 balls as Namibia moved into three figures in the 16th over, and he became more aggressive with Wiese now at the crease and victory in sight.

Finally, with two overs to spare, Williams hit Chatara for the winning four to inflict defeat on their hosts.

He finished with 62 not out off 53 balls, with a six and four fours, while Wiese was not out with 13.

Chatara had bowled well for his four overs to take one wicket for only 17 runs, but Namibia had never really been put under much pressure in chasing down their target.

The T20I series is now level at one victory to each side.
