Mudiwa Hood and Trevor D’s Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Mudiwa Hood and Trevor Dongo have decided to drop visuals for their 2019 tender-hearted dedication to all mothers.

Amai Vakandirera is a song we fell in love with instantly and as Zimbuzz we wrote a review of it in July of the same year.

Shot in a rural setting, the video takes us through the realities that most grew up in, but it puts a spotlight on one particular thing – Mothers always appreciate the little that their children do.

With a wheelbarrow, a bar of green soap, and a bag of mealie meal, Mudiwa present the gifts to his on-set mother, and she thanks him like he has just dropped a bunch of car keys at her feet, such are African mums.

The emotion on both their faces is highlighted effortlessly giving out such an emotional scene.

But not everyone still has their mothers with them and that angle is shown with a solo Trevor Dongo narrating the story both in words and action, seated in the lone homestead belting out words of gratitude to the late mothers.

The fact is further amplified by a cemetery scene where the two take turns to reminisce the days the mom was still on earth but also alive to the fact that her works and sacrifices live on.

What better day than drop the song on Mothers Day and it doesn’t sound like a 3-year-old song at all.

Raza leads spirited chase but Zimbabwe XI fall short in second T20

Sikandar Raza played a brilliant innings of 82 as he spearheaded a spirited fightback by Zimbabwe XI after South Africa A had run up a huge total of 224 for four wickets in the third T20 match between the teams at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.

After the tourists won the toss and opted to bat first, the home side were under the cosh right from the first over, bowled by the usually economical Wellington Masakadza to Lesiba Ngoepe, who hit him for three fours immediately.

Then when Tanaka Chivanga came on, Reeza Hendricks took care of him with a four and a six, as well as three singles in that over.

Fours flowed so readily that after seven overs the South Africans had already reached 84 runs without losing a wicket.

After this, the Zimbabweans were able to put their field back and contain the carnage to an extent, until in the 13th over Hendricks, after hitting Masuku for two successive sixes, went for another big hit and skyed a catch on the leg side.

He had scored 77 off only 35 balls, with four sixes and nine fours, and the score was 142 for one wicket.

Wihan Lubbe did not last long, making 10 off eight balls before he was caught off a leg-side hit from Sikandar Raza at 163 for two in the 15th over.

Heinrich Klaasen came and went for three off six balls, another leg-side catch removing him off the bowling of Tendai Chatara.

Ngoepe now went into overdrive and, after hitting Masuku for a six and four off consecutive balls, reached a brilliant century off only 57 balls.

The score raced past 200, and Ngoepe survived until the final ball of the innings, when he was caught in the deep off another big hit for 114, scored off 63 balls with five sixes and 13 fours.

Tristan Stubbs was not out with 17 off nine balls, and the final total was a massive 224 for four wickets off the 20 overs.

The four wickets that fell were divided among Chatara, Chivanga, Masuku and Raza, but all the Zimbabwean bowlers went for at least nine runs an over.

Chasing such a challenging total, Zimbabwe XI their work cut out, but wickets soon fell.Takudzwanashe Kaitano was out for one in the first over, as he drove Bjorn Fortuin for a simple catch to mid-off.

Wessly Madhevere was caught in the deep from a big hit off Lizaad Williams for 19 off 11 balls, while Craig Ervine edged the same bowler to the keeper for 14 to make the score 34 for three after four overs.

Raza and Tino Mutombodzi came out hitting and the team fifty was achieved in the sixth over.

Mutombodzi faced eight balls for 13 runs and was caught in the deep off Gerald Coetzee at 57 for four in the following over.

After 10 overs, the score was 81 for four, with Raza and Ryan Burl together.

Raza in particular hit out brilliantly, reaching his fifty off only 30 balls in a sequence of four successive sixes off Jason Smith – 28 runs came off that over.

Burl, with less of the bowling, did his bit with 30 off 16 balls before falling to a catch at deep midwicket off Coetzee.

The pair had added 83 in seven overs, taking the score to 140 for five in the 14th over.

With Richmond Mutumbami as his next partner, Raza continued to hit brilliantly, and he blasted Hendricks for two successive sixes before playing the third delivery on to his stumps.

His score was 82 off 42 balls, and he hit no fewer than nine sixes and two fours – the score was now 171 for six in the 16th over.

Mutumbami miscued a stroke to be caught for 12, while Masakadza was caught for eight and Masuku yorked for 10, the score now being 195 for nine with five balls to come.

The last man, Chivanga, sliced a four past third man and then took a single to bring up the 200, quite an achievement.

The score at the close was 202 for nine wickets, giving South Africa A victory by 22 runs.

Of the bowlers, Williams took three for 38, while there were two wickets each for Fortuin and Coetzee.

Zimbabwe XI go down fighting as South Africa A win decider

A superb fighting partnership between Donald Tiripano and Wellington Masakadza was not enough to give Zimbabwe XI victory in the third and final one-day match against South Africa A at Harare Sports Club on Friday, the hosts going down in the end by 36 runs.

Sikandar Raza continued his usual policy of winning the toss and putting the tourists in to bat first.

South Africa A got away to an excellent start, with Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton scoring freely off the bowlers.

They showed little difficulty in their opening partnership of 98 in 19 overs, at which point Rickelton chipped a simple catch from Masakadza, in his first over, to mid-off where it was held by Raza.

Reeza Hendricks came in next, and he was just getting set with 14 off 21 balls when he swept a ball from Masakadza to the leg boundary, only to be caught by Kevin Kasuza.

De Zorzi went on to reach 78 when he became Masakadza’s third victim, after he also swept a ball towards long leg, where it was very well held low down by Tanaka Chivanga running in – 147 for three in the 29th over.

It was four in a row for Masakadza when the visiting captain, Heinrich Klaasen (17), went for a big hit and skyed the ball over the head of the wicket-keeper, Richmond Mutumbami, who ran back to hold the catch very well to make it 181 for four in the 35th over.

Raza then took a wicket as Lesiba Ngoepe (14) went for a big leg hit and was comprehensively bowled at 217 for five.

Then came a vital partnership between Khaya Zondo and Andile Phehlukwayo who added 57 for the sixth wicket in less than seven overs.

The last two overs of the innings went better for the Zimbabweans, though, as Tendai Chatara bowled out Zondo for an excellent 60 off 60 balls to break the stand.

Chivanga then delivered an eventful final over, bowling out Bjorn Fortuin with his first ball.

The batters scored six runs off the next three deliveries, before Chivanga struck again, bowling out Gerald Coetzee and Daryn Dupavillon, hitting out, with the last two balls of the innings, straight full-length deliveries.

Despite their last five wickets falling for only 13 runs, the South Africans finished with the good score of 287 for nine wickets, Phehlukwayo being the not-out batter with 29 off 25 balls.

Chivanga finished with three wickets for 43 off eight overs, but the star accolade went to Masakadza, who in 10 overs took four top-order batters for only 44 runs.

The Zimbabweans had an early setback in chasing their difficult target, as Takudzwanashe Kaitano misjudged the third ball of Dupavillon’s first over and got a leading edge to be caught on the off-side.

Prince Masvaure came in to play a cautious game, while Kasuza was more aggressive, playing some fine strokes as he got after the bowling, although getting away with a thick edge or two.

Masvaure was the first to go, however, aiming a cramped pull at a short ball from Coetzee and skying a catch to deep square leg for nine – 47 for two after 14 overs.

Wessly Madhevere, in next, appeared to be settling down when he played over a yorker from the left-arm spinner Fortuin and had his middle stump knocked back for 11.

Then came a major disaster, as Raza dabbled at his second ball, from Phehlukwayo, outside his off stump and edged a low catch to the keeper before he had scored – 78 for four in the 20th over.

Kasuza had a fortunate escape on 49, as Fortuin failed to hold a difficult return chance, but then Milton Shumba, who had rather struggled to score three, played a ball from Phehlukwayo on to his stumps to make the score 85 for five in the 24th over.

Kasuza, now joined by Mutumbami, reached his 50 off 79 balls.

A boundary by Mutumbami brought up the 100 after 26 overs, meaning the last five Zimbabwean wickets needed to score at almost eight runs an over to win.

Mutumbami was in fine form, scoring freely, but Kasuza struggled to increase his scoring rate.

Eventually he tried to pull a ball from Lizaad Williams and skyed a catch to be out for 66 – he faced 99 balls and hit eight fours, the score being now 145 for six wickets in the 33rd over.

Only two runs later, however, Mutumbami followed him back to the pavilion, caught at backward point off a lifting ball from Coetzee, after making a good 39 off 37 balls.

At 147 for seven in the 34th over, it seemed Zimbabwe XI’s hopes of victory had realistically gone as Masakadza joined Tiripano at the crease.

However, the pair faced the situation magnificently, pushing the score along at a good pace without slogging, placing the ball and running skilfully between wickets, taking the score past 200 in fine style.

They added 89 together in less than 11 overs before Tiripano went for 48, dragging a ball from Phehlukwayo on to his stumps, after facing only 35 balls and hitting a six and six fours.

Chatara came in, but then Masakadza, trying to steal the strike, was run out for 32, scored off 32 balls, and nine wickets were down for 241 in the 45th over.

The last pair of Chatara and Chivanga managed to add 10 runs before, in the 48th over, Chivanga was bowled by Phehlukwayo for five to finish the match, with Chatara on seven not out and the total 251.

Phehlukwayo with four wickets for 32 was the South African hero with the ball, while Coetzee took two wickets.

South Africa A have therefore won the one-day series by two victories to one.

South Africa A287-9 in 50 overs (Tony de Zorzi 78, Khaya Zondo 60, Ryan Rickelton 47; Wellington Masakadza 4/44, Tanaka Chivanga 3/43, Tendai Chatara 1/54)

Zimbabwe XI251 all out in 47.2 overs (Kevin Kasuza 66, Donald Tiripano 48, Richmond Mutumbami 39; Andile Phehlukwayo 4/32, Gerald Coetzee 2/40, Lizaad Williams 1/39)

South Africa A won by 36 runs

Lomagundi stun Falcon college in Pure Drop festival opener

It was a rugby fiesta at St John’s College as schools’ first team rugby came to life after a 3 year halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The day was characterised by different fortunes as teams were totally dominated with the last two fixtures of the day, Falcon vs Lomagundi and Prince Edward vs St John’s College, living up to their top tier billing.

In the first match of the day, Gateway College was thrashed 58-0 by Hillcrest in a one sided affair.

Eaglesvale were not a match for Bulawayo based Christian Brothers College with the final score line being 12-5 in favour of CBC.

Watershed and Heritage played to a 12 all draw before a new look Churchill High School dismantled Wise Owl 50-0.

In what was probably the match of the day, Bob Mahari’s Lomagundi narrowly beat Falcon College by a point in a 22 – 21 thriller.

Falcon head coach, Dereck Chiwara took the defeat with grace and was proud of his team.

Said Chiwara: “What we saw today was a good game of rugby from Falcon and Lomagundi boys. It clearly shows rugby is alive and good to go.

Considering the boys last played rugby in Form 3, they have suddenly been thrown into the deep-end and credit to them. The game was physical and was also exciting to see some running rugby. The boys definitely put up a good show across the board.

Yes they are lots of areas that did not go according to plan, it was clearly an issue of being rusty. Decision making was poor in certain situations, but that will obviously get better. The foundation was set and credit to both teams.”

Lomagundi coach Farai Bob Mahari had this to say:

“We feel that technically it was a poor game but it was great for theater and drama.

It was old fashioned school boy Rugby. With a lot of heart and moments of brilliance. Ultimately Rugby was the winner!”

In last match of the day, the host school St John’s College got the better of long time rivals Prince Edward. The Rams won 17 – 12 leaving Prince Edward a try away from levelling terms.

Prince Edward coach, Shaun De Souza was happy with his team’s performance despite the loss.

He said, “Today’s game was a great show of character the Tigers did very well considering we only had the opportunity have two training sessions based on the timing of Ordinary level results coming out.

Days ago and lower six intake process. It was the first game and boys were bound to make mistakes. We defended well in the first half and then started playing a bit late credit to St. John’s College for a good win unfortunately we don’t get to play them during the season which is sad.”

More rugby action will be there on Wednesday with second teams competing while first team action returns on Saturday.

Prince Edward Tigers get new kits

The Prince Edward rugby team the Tigers, got a new kit for the 2022 season which came as a boost with the Derby Day Schools tournament currently happening at St Johns College in Harare.

The new playing kit came from Steel Centre with shorts being donated by old boy John Falkernberg

Thaton Properties, Maestro, Evitro, Ben Nyaumwe, Consha Enterprise and Shasha Gomez, came forward with the tracksuit.

PE old boys Class of 96’ sponsored Rugby balls and Rugby ball bags.

Prince Edward School head coach, Shaun De Souza said that the gesture by the sponsors is welcome as the school is resetting especially after three years without school sports.

De Souza, “The sponsorship is very much appreciated we have had no sport for three years as we conformed to government regulations. We basically started from zero we are grateful and appreciate Steel Centre Thanton properties Consha Enterprise and the PE Old boys class ‘96 for this gesture we can now try and build towards our 125th anniversary next year as the school achieves a great millstone.

PE Sports Director, Tawanda Jimu echoed the same sentiments adding that the kit will boost the boys as they head into battle against St John’s College.

Jimu said, “Firstly, as PE we are so grateful to our sponsors. This will go a long way for PE rugby, this sponsorship is going towards the building of a livelihood for the boys their passion and zeal is to play professional rugby and it begins with such partners coming to make the dream come true.

This is a big booster for the Johns game tomorrow, new kit raises confidence to the lads.”

The Prince Edward Tigers will play against St John’s Rams at 1600 today Tuesday, April 26, and will then clash with bitter rivals Churchill Bulldogs on Saturday at 1440.

All games will be played at St John’s College.
