Cultural Rhythms Collide: Isau Meneses & Taffie Matiure Perform Live at Theatre in the Park

A Mozambican traditional rhythm artist Isau Meneses will perform for the first time in Zimbabwe featuring renowned mbira player Taffie Matiure this Friday at Theatre in the Park.

Fronted by Isaú Meneses who plays an instrument called Útse, acoustic guitar and keyboard, the musicians sing about society, the environment, and romance.

The band draws its inspiration from other traditional Mozambican artists like Lazaro Vinho, Lalarita, and the international band Ozibiza.

Meneses says he started learning to play the guitar at a tender age 12, after his father gave him one when he was eight years-old.

“In 1976, I made my first public appearance with a youth band in Mafambisse, Dondo district. Around the same time, I began learning to play the keyboard. However, I consider the beginning of my career to be in 1983 when I intensified my presence at musical shows in Beira city.

“In 1984, I won a success parade in the same city. In 1985, I received an invitation from Poligramp, a record company in Zimbabwe, to record an album, but I declined to prioritize continuing my university studies,” Meneses explained.

According to Meneses establishing and promoting cultural exchange programs between Zimbabwe and Mozambique artistes as well as collaborations could uplift the two country’s music.

“This would include music festivals, workshops, and joint concerts, allowing musicians to share their styles and reach new audiences.

“Encourage and support collaborative music projects between artists from both countries. This could involve co-producing songs, creating joint albums, or organizing collaborative tours. These projects can help blend different musical influences and appeal to a broader audience,” he said.

With 11 albums to their credit, Bantu “Musical Vibes” is sure to thrill fans this Friday with songs that include “Tapi Djee,” “Pissacoma,” “Thakutha,” and “Há esperança.”

On the other hand, self-defined Shona, Zimbabwean afro-fusion mbira plus marimba player Taffie Matiure is one of his generation’s unique talents.

He communicates with other audiences and musicians in what he terms “originality and pride”.

Taffie is a performer who inspires performers of all ages to become themselves. An authentic musician who embraces diversity, imagination, and integrity.

He has appeared at Zimfest USA (2018, 2019), MUHAG (2021), and Good Food Festival (2021), among others, and at many famous music venues including Zimbabwe German Society, Gavas Restaurant, Alliance Francê, Cosmopolitan Restaurant and Bar and Chez Zandi.

A mbira player since age of six Taffie holds a BSc Honours in Music Business, Musicology and  Technology from the Midlands State University. Music lovers have been asked to pay what they can!
