Almasi Collaborative Arts & The Public Theater Launch Inaugural Zimbabwean Writer’s Retreat

Almasi Collaborative Arts, in partnership with the acclaimed The Public Theater, New York, have announced the commencement of the first-ever Zimbabwean Writer’s Retreat.

This pioneering initiative, taking place in Harare from March 31 to April 12, 025, provides a dedicated residential respite for five selected Zimbabwean playwrights to further develop their plays and sharpen their creative voice.

The retreat is envisioned as an environment fostering wonder, creativity, and fearless artistic exploration.

Participants are encouraged to harness their imagination, experiment with novel ideas, and challenge their creative limits, delving into their written narratives with the goal to make them the best version they can become, within this supportive setting.

The five playwrights selected for the inaugural retreat are Amanda Ranganawa (Mutare), Tatenda Mutyambizi (Harare), Kingsley Chinhanu (Mutare), Philani Nyoni (Bulawayo) and Rudo Mutangadura (Harare)

“As a playwright who has benefited tremendously from residential Writer’s Retreats in the US, I wanted to bring such an opportunity to Zimbabwean writers,” said Danai Gurira, Executive Artistic Director of Almasi Collaborative Arts.

“The respite allows the space and time to give their gift the chance to reach the page, creating narratives that can benefit many others for generations to come. The writer brings the indelible word to the world, it is with them that the story is born.

“I am so excited by what these talented creatives will bring to pass. Special thanks to the tremendous support of The Public Theater in New York City, to Oskar Eustis, whose belief in the Zimbabwean voices that are being supported is invaluable.”
