ZC launches Women’s National Premier League

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has announced the introduction of Zimbabwe’s first ever national club competition for women, the Women’s National Premier League (WNPL).

Getting underway this Friday, the inaugural edition of the tournament brings together six teams in an exciting T20 format.

Competing for top honours are Queens Women and Amakhosi Women from Bulawayo, Takashinga Queens and Gladiators Women from Harare, Ghetto Star Women from Manicaland and Mbizo Women from the Midlands.

ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni emphasised the league’s pivotal role in the development of women’s cricket.

“The launch of the Women’s National Premier League represents a monumental step in our ongoing commitment to uplifting and promoting women’s cricket in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“This new club competition adds a vital new dimension to our pathway for women, connecting the dots from schools cricket to club level before moving into the provincial and national setups.

“This structure is designed to ensure that talented players have clear opportunities for progression, helping to elevate the standard of women’s cricket in Zimbabwe.

“We believe this league will inspire countless young girls to dream big and strive for success, and we remain dedicated to supporting the growth of women’s cricket at every level.”

The WNPL’s first matchday promises thrilling cricket action with three key matchups.

The first match is in Harare this Friday, with Takashinga Queens taking on Gladiators Women at Old Hararians Sports Club,

On Saturday, Queens Women will clash with Amakhosi Women in a high-stakes Bulawayo derby at Bulawayo Athletic Club, while Mbizo Women will face off against Ghetto Star Women at Masvingo Sports Club in Masvingo.

Since its establishment in 2020, the men’s National Premier League has been instrumental in raising cricket standards in Zimbabwe, completing four successful editions.

Building on this strong foundation, the WNPL aims to deliver a vibrant and competitive platform for women, further advancing the sport’s inclusivity and excellence nationwide.
