Opera Returns to the National Gallery With “A Night of Timeless Arias and Refined Voices”

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe will transform into a stage of elegance and artistry next month when it hosts A Night of Timeless Arias and Refined Voices, a black-tie opera gala celebrating centuries of musical tradition.

Organised by the Friends of the Gallery (FOG) in partnership with the Festival of Song Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Association of Choral and Music Arts (ZACMA), the event is set for Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the Courtauld Gallery a venue long praised for its acoustic richness and cultural significance.

The evening will bring together acclaimed vocalists and musicians performing selections that trace opera’s global journey — from its European roots to its evolving influence across continents.

The initiative is part of the Friends of the Gallery’s growing calendar of multidisciplinary programs that bridge visual art, performance, and cultural education.

“Opera, as an art form, has a rich and diverse history that spans centuries and continents,” said ZACMA representative Simbarashe Makavanaga.

“Today, opera continues to thrive, with a global community of artists, audiences, and institutions that celebrate its unique blend of music, drama, and spectacle.”

The gala builds on a strong year for the Friends of the Gallery, who have hosted two successful Arts and Crafts Fairs and helped organize the National Gallery’s anniversary celebrations.

For Chairman Victor Nyakauru, the opera night represents both continuity and ambition.

“We have come together with the Festival of Song to bring the operatic discipline into the Gallery,” Nyakauru said. “We are inviting all opera lovers to join us and support an art form that is deserving of a greater following.”

Tickets for the exclusive black-tie event are available from the Artlife Shop at the National Gallery. The organizers promise an immersive evening that will appeal not only to seasoned opera enthusiasts but also to those discovering the art form for the first time.

Founded in 1957, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe continues to champion the country’s artistic heritage through exhibitions and cultural programs.

A Night of Timeless Arias and Refined Voices adds a distinctive note to its mission, uniting the visual and performing arts in one of Harare’s most storied cultural spaces.
