Hope Masike will this Friday commemorate mbira gurus Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, the late Chiwoniso Maraire and Tete Joyce Warikandwa in a concert dubbed the Gwenyambirakadzi.
The concert will feature Hope Masike’s music, old traditional classic and some of our favourite songs from these three great women who made playing mbira more fashionable.
This concert is a way of honouring and keeping faith with the greats whose works shaped a lot of artists of today.
Ultimately their greatness was seared into Hope Masike as she continues with the journey. Many academic books we read say historically women were not allowed to play Mbira.
In a statement, her management highlighted that the pioneers of mbira music had to sacrifice a lot for the genre to be where it is now.
“Some women had to sacrifice certain comforts and challenge societal expectations in order for all women to able to freely play mbira hence we must celebrate them,” said Lucky Muzava.
The concert is an extension of women’s day celebrations which started on the 8th of March.
It will take place at the Jazz 24/7 from 7 pm till late.
