The Heart Group, owned by Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries founder and Yadah FC owner Prophet Walter Magaya, last night unveiled a $320,000 sponsorship deal for the Women’s Football Super League, in what is seen as a groundbreaking act of benevolence for the ladies’ league.

The Women’s League has had no principal sponsor for years and will now be branded as the Heart League.

This historic sponsorship includes providing two sets of uniforms for each of the 16 teams in the Heart League.

Additionally, the sponsorship will cover the inaugural 16-team tournament, where the last eight teams will stay at the Yadah Hotel and use the Heart Stadium facilities.

The First Lady, Dr. Auxillia Mangagwa, was the guest of honour at the event, represented by Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Angeline Gata.

What the Guests said:

Guest of Honour Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa: “Let us work in unity, just like tomatoes tied in a plastic bag. Be your sister’s keeper. Thank you, Prophet Walter Magaya, for spearheading this sponsorship initiative for the Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League.” (she was represented by the Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Angeline Gata)

Prophet Walter Magaya: “We are here to lend a helping hand in sports, particularly in sponsoring women. We have noticed that women have lacked sponsorship over the past decade, and we want to uplift them by offering our support. If the opportunity arises, we are willing to do even more.”

Zimbabwe Women’s Soccer League Chairperson Theresa Maguraushe: “To our revered sponsor, soon to be unveiled, thank you for responding to the cries of the girl child’s voice from the wilderness.”

Deputy Minister of Sport, Emily Jesaya: “This evening, we shine a special light on the empowerment of women in sports. When we empower our female athletes, the nation reaps the rewards. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has worked so hard to make this a reality.”

ZIFA Chief Executive Officer, Yvonne Manwa: “Today is not just a day for the launch of sponsorship; it is the beginning of a brighter and more inclusive future for women’s football.”

Zimbabwe Olympic Committee CEO Marlene Gadzirayi: “This sponsorship marks a significant milestone in the journey of Women’s Football in Zimbabwe. With dedicated sponsorship, we are confident that the league will continue to grow and attract more players. With improved resources, our women will have access to better facilities. We are confident that we can produce a squad capable of competing on the world stage.”

Kingdom World Tour Harare: A prayer meeting disguised as a concert

Forget the cancel culture!

Kirk Franklin and Maverick City Music’s Kingdom Tour Harare turned out to be a divine time of worship as attendees took time to pray for the nation aside of singing along to their playlist music.

It was New Life Covenant’s Bishop Tudor Bismark who opened the meeting with prayer before hostess and worship leader, Rorisang Thandekiso, led the thousands gathered into a special prayer for the nation.

In a spiritually charged tone, Rorisang compelled the audience to pray for the nation, specifically, the leaders, the economy, the education system and law enforcement.

This call turned the Glamis Arena into  church as many burst into prayer seeking for God’s face in the nation.

Even when Maverick City (Chandler Moore, Todd Galberth, Naomi Raine together with Tim Godfrey and Kirk Franklin) came through, they were all ready to lead worship and there was a serious move of the spirit of God.

People were praying as Naomi Raine was singing The Story I Tell. Tears were flowing on cheeks as others were worshipping to songs like I Trust in God, Firm Foundation, Promises, Jireh, Bless Me and He won’t Fail among others.

Aside of the worship, there were other interesting moments like when Kirk Franklin took to the keys – as all the musicians sat on chairs with the band quiet as if to take a rest – and started playing as the whole of the Glamis Arena was singing My Life is Your Hands.

Chandler Moore then took to the keys and invited Todd Galberth to sing Million Little Miracles and the crowd sang to every note.

The stadium also sang Chandler Moore’s new song, Omemma, and he gladly played along although it was not part of the set.

Kirk Franklin also dazzled with hits such as Imagine Me, I Smile and Hosanna Forever.

Vokal Ex

Nigerian artist, Tim Godfrey, who was announced late to be part of this tour brought in energy with his rendition of Wahamba Nathi and his songs Very Big God, Nara and Onaga.

Local Acts in support also came guns blazing with sizzling performances. Ezekiel Paul did not disappoint and neither did Covenant Praise.

It was Vokal Ex from Bulawayo who left the crowd wanting for more with their version on We are Ready for Jerusalem.

They also did a medley of Shona songs which included Munozoriona Denga and Tariro yenyu.

Apart from the music, the stage was well organised and sound was impeccable with a few to none glitches.

The show was indeed worth the while!

First Deaf Miss South Africa Crowned

Mia le Roux has become the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa following a divisive competition which saw one finalist withdraw after being trolled over her Nigerian heritage.

In her acceptance speech, Ms Le Roux said she hoped her victory would help those who felt excluded from society to achieve their “wildest dreams, just like I am”.

She said she wanted to help those who were “financially excluded or differently abled”.

Last week 23-year-old law student Chidimma Adetshina pulled out of the competition following allegations that her mother may have stolen the identity of a South African woman.

Ms Adetshina was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a mother of Mozambican origin.

She had been at the centre of a social media storm for several weeks, with many people, including a cabinet minister, questioning her right to represent the country.

She said she had been the victim of “black-on-black hate”, highlighting a particular strain of xenophobia in South Africa known as “afrophobia”, which targets those from other African countries.

Ms Le Roux, 28, was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one and has a cochlear implant to help her perceive sound.

She said it had taken two years of speech therapy before she was able to say her first words.

After winning, the model and marketing manager said: “I am a proudly South African deaf woman and I know what it feels like to be excluded.

“I know now that I was put on this planet to break boundaries and I did it tonight.”

Chidimma pulls out of Miss South Africa amid nationality row

The Miss South Africa beauty contestant at the centre of a nationality row has withdrawn from the competition, saying she took the decision for her and her family’s safety and well-being.

Chidimma Adetshina’s announcement on Instagram came a day after a preliminary investigation by the home affairs department found that her mother may have committed “identity theft” to become a South African national.

Ms Adetshina – a 23-year-old law student – said she was born in Soweto, a township next to Johannesburg, and grew up in Cape Town.

In media interviews she explained her father was Nigerian and her mother was a South African of Mozambican descent.

For weeks her roots have been at the centre of a social media storm, with some South Africans questioning whether she was a South African.

As the row escalated, the organisers of the Miss South Africa pageant asked the home affairs department to conduct an investigation ahead of the event on Saturday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the department said it had so far found that the identity of an “innocent” South African mother “may have been stolen” by Ms Adetshina’s mother.

However, Ms Adetshina “could not have participated in the alleged unlawful actions of her mother as she was an infant at the time”, the department said.

It added that it was conducting further investigations with the aim of pressing criminal charges, while also obtaining legal advice “on the implications of the alleged fraudulent activity on Adetshina’s citizenship status”.

In an Instagram post, Ms Adetshina did not respond to the findings, but said she had taken the “difficult decision” to withdraw from the competition.

She said she was grateful “for all the love and support” she had received, and wished the remaining contestants the best.

“Whoever wears the crown, represents us all,” Ms Adetshina added.

Manondo Scores 10th Goal of the Season as Caps United Edge FC Platinum

William Manondo scored his 10th goal of the season to give Caps United a hard-fought 1-0 win against FC Platinum on Sunday in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match.

A well-delivered cross from Alois Bunjira Jr was met by a clinical header from Manondo in the 37th minute, a goal that dealt a blow to FC Platinum’s title ambitions.

This victory also marked Caps United’s first win against the Miners in seven years.

FC Platinum’s loss means Simba Bhora, who defeated Yadah Stars 1-0 on Saturday, have taken over the league lead with 43 points, one more than the Zvishavane-based side.

Meanwhile, Dynamos’ struggles continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bulawayo Chiefs at Barbourfields Stadium, meaning they have won only three of their last 10 matches.

Elsewhere, first-half goals from Nqobile Ndlovu and Archford Faira secured a 2-1 win for Highlanders over Chegutu Pirates at the Baobab Stadium, with Dexter Phiri scoring a late consolation for the hosts.

The match between relegation-threatened TelOne and Hwange at Bata Stadium in Gweru ended in a goalless draw.

Review: 15 000 People Attend Zimfest 2024

Zimfest marked its 25th year with an unforgettable weekend. With over 15,000 people in attendance, the annual event solidified its reputation as a must-attend event for Southern African music lovers.

The festival, held over two days, brought together an impressive range of artists and a vibrant crowd, ensuring that attendees were treated to an eclectic mix of music, food, and crafts. Zimbabwean Ambassador to the UK Colonel Christian Katsande was also in attendance.

At its core, Zimfest is about connection and over the years, friendships have been forged, collaborations established, and communities strengthened. The event also brings together Zimbabweans from all over the diaspora, celebrating the heritage of at least four generations.

The event also honours both seasoned veterans and emerging talents in the music industry, offering a platform for all to enjoy and share in the diverse sounds and traditions of Zimbabwe. Businesses have also thrived by participating in and supporting the festival, and this year was no different.

For some, the festival might have been a resounding success, a highlight of the year that brought people together and showcased the best of Southern Africa’s talent and creativity. The wide range of activities, the variety of performances, and the array of stalls could have left many attendees with cherished memories and a sense of connection.

Others might have had a more nuanced experience, enjoying certain aspects while feeling that there were areas that could be improved. Perhaps they noticed a few long queues, the occasional technical glitches, or felt that some activities did not cater to all age groups or interests.

These perspectives are equally valuable, as they provide constructive feedback that can help make future festivals even better. Nonetheless, it did not take away from the overall experience.

Diverse lineup shines

Performances were spread throughout the day, ensuring that the energy never dipped. The event commenced with veteran performer Busi Mhlanga, whose familiarity with the Zimfest stage set the perfect tone for the event.

Feli Nandi, was exceptional. Her soulful performance captivated the audience, showcasing her vocal prowess and emotional depth, further cementing her place as a festival favourite.

Poptain and Sulumani Chimbetu also delivered solid performances, seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary sounds to keep the audience engaged and entertained.

ExQ, meanwhile, who is no stranger to the Zimfest crowd, delivered a polished performance with a mix of classic hits engaging the crowd with his smooth vocals and charm.

Marvin Muchando, Director of Redcliffe Management, said: “Zimfest has always been a remarkable celebration of culture, community, and creativity.

“The support from attendees and participants alike truly exemplified the spirit of Southern Africa. This year, we showcased an incredible lineup of musical performances, highlighting the diversity of our community and the vibrant cultural tapestry that defines us.

From traditional rhythms to contemporary beats, the music brought people together, transcending boundaries and creating an atmosphere of inclusivity.”

Co director Jade Muchando, added: “Ultimately, the true measure of the festival’s impact lies in the stories shared and the connections made. Whether seen as a triumph or a learning experience, the festival has once again reminded us of the power of coming together to celebrate our shared culture and traditions.”

Shinsoman’s standout performance

Shinsoman’s electrifying performance was another standout moment of the festival. His unique style and powerful delivery resonated with the audience, making him one of the most talked-about acts of the weekend. His set was a masterful mix that kept the crowd engaged and dancing.

Renowned international acts

Amapiano has emerged as an ‘iconic’ genre, captivating audiences with its unique blend of deep house, jazz, and lounge music. Its infectious rhythms and innovative sound have made it a staple in the global music scene, with enthusiasts eagerly awaiting new releases and live performances.

The genre’s influence has vividly been displayed in the Piano Republik tent, where every year, the space is bursting with vibrant energy. This tent has become a symbol of the genre’s power to unite and uplift, drawing in fans from all walks of life to celebrate its euphoric sounds.

South African sensations Mellow & Sleazy brought an energetic and high-octane performance that was a major highlight of the festival. Their dynamic stage presence had the crowd on their feet, creating a party atmosphere that was hard to beat.

Joining them, DJ Tira, Daliwonga, and Felo Le Tee delivered stellar sets that transformed the famous red tent into a pulsating dance floor. Their latest hits, which many sing along or dance to in their cars, were brought to life on stage, adding immense value to the festival and showcasing the inclusivity and diversity that Zimfest continues to embrace.

Winky wows the crowd

The headlining act, Winky D, delivered a breathtaking 1 hour 30 minutes set that left festival-goers begging for more. His performance was a highlight, with a perfect blend of beloved hits that showcased his versatility. The energy in the crowd was palpable, a testament to Winky D’s enduring popularity and charisma.

While Day 2 was relatively smaller in scale, it did not lack in fun and entertainment. Performances from Enzo Ishall and Saintfloew kept the momentum going, proving that the festival’s appeal spans both major and emerging artists. Fans of Saintfloew were particularly thrilled by his set, which was both intimate and energetic.

Levels and Fantan, who are a fan favourite and known for their energetic performances, were a highlight of the festival, drawing large crowds and adding to the overall excitement of the event.

The Boogie Bus

Returning for its second year, the Boogie Bus was a hit once again. It offered a relaxed space for friends to enjoy drinks and an eclectic mix of music, adding a unique dimension to the festival experience.

Sky Terrace VVIP Experience

The Sky Terrace, the festival’s VVIP area, expanded this year, offering an elevated experience for those who purchased tickets. It was a treat that provided a special vibe with exclusive views and amenities that made the experience even more memorable.

A Celebration of culture and entrepreneurship

The festival grounds were also bustling with food stalls and craft vendors, highlighting the entrepreneurial spirit that Zimfest supports. It’s a place where entrepreneurs can put their name out there and connect with a wider audience, adding another layer of value to the festival experience.

The tireless efforts of the Zimfest team and volunteers were evident throughout the event, making it an enjoyable experience all round.

Zimfest 2024 was, for all intents and purposes, a resounding success, celebrating a blend of exceptional performances, community spirit, and cultural diversity.

“Song Unburied” Play Explores Zimbabwean History and Identity at Theatre in the Park

A not-to-be-missed play titled “Song Unburied” will show at Theatre in the Park for a short run from 2 to 9 August 2024 starting at 6 pm.

There are discounts for students and also pensioners at the door.

Song Unburied was written by prolific novelist and journalist Panashe Chigumadzi who grew up in South Africa.

The play was produced and directed by Daves Guzha of Rooftop Promotions featuring a stellar cast of award-winning actresses the likes of Charmaine Munjeri and Dalma Chiwereva ably supported by Tinevimbo Chimbetete with sensational bone scintillating music by Abel Mafuleni.

Song Unburied, is an intergenerational story of re-memory, re-membering and reparation following the troubled spirit of the British Museum’s newly appointed First Black Curator, Rambisayi Mangosho, as she discovers the bones of anti-colonial heroine Mbuya Nehanda in its basement.

Just before Rambi begins her new appointment at the Museum, her grandmother — the only one who knew what to do with her troubling dreams — passes.

Unable to return to Zimbabwe to bury her grandmother, Rambi buries herself in the “diversity and inclusion” work of the Museum which has cynically hired her in the wake of historic protest and contestation.

As she begins work on the Great African Civilizations exhibition, she finds solace and guidance in the company of Tsitsi, a war veteran who has been the Museum’s caretaker since gaining asylum in the UK.

They discover they share the totem — they are both vaChihera. Upon discovering the bones of Mbuya Nehanda and other leaders of Zimbabwe’s anti-colonial wars in the museum’s basement, both Rambi and Tsitsi recognize the voices from the troubling dreams.

Tsitsi warns Rambi that the bones cannot simply be removed or returned — there must be a ritual.

This and other twists will surely keep theatre audiences captivated as the cast delivers on stage.

Perhaps for those not in the know, Chigumadzi is a Zimbabwean born in 1991 but grew up in South Africa.

She has published her writing in a variety of media. She has been a columnist for The Guardian, Die Zeit, The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Review of Vooks and Chimurenga.

She was a founder of VANGUARD, a magazine designed to give space to young, black South African women interested in how queer identities, pan-Africanism and Black Consciousness intersect.

At the start of her career, Chigumadzi worked as a reporter for CNBC Africa.

Chigumadzi draws on the history of Zimbabwe in her work, by exploring national and personal histories and identities.

Her first novel, Sweet Medicine, was published in 2015, winning the K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award.

Her 2017 narrative essay These Bones Will Rise Again drew on Shona perspectives to explore the concept of the “Mothers of the Nation” and interrogate perceptions of Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana in Zimbabwe.

While studying and writing on the legacies of Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence, Chigumadzi also writes about modern identities for southern Africans.
