Joburg Bangla Tigers are the Zim Afro T10 champions

Joburg Bangla Tigers have been crowned the 2024 Zim Afro T10 champions after they defeated Cape Town Samp Army off the very last delivery by just five runs in a thrilling final played at Harare Sports Club on Sunday.

Samp Army won the toss and put Tigers in to bat.

Kusal Perera led the way, scoring 33 off 11 balls, with four sixes and a four, in an opening partnership of 59 in only 3.4 overs with Mohammad Shahzad.

Shahzad went on to make 44 off 25 balls, but after the score reached 97 in the eighth over wickets fell quickly in the search for quick runs, and the momentum was lost.

The innings ended at 129 for five, with Sikandar Raza not out with 12, having had too little time to make much of a mark on the innings.

Gordon Nicholson took two wickets for 10 runs in the final over, but overall Amir Hotak did well with one for 14 in his two overs.

Samp Army also made a very good start, although Brian Bennett and Dawid Malan were never quite able to match the feat of their opponents’ opening pair.

They put on 83 before the New Zealander Adam Milne returned to bowl the seventh over, which changed the course of the match, the over itself costing only six runs.

With his second ball he bowled out Bennett, who made 36 off 21 balls, and with his fourth he had Rohan Mustafa caught without scoring.

Jack Taylor joined Malan, and they hit well, but found themselves needing 21 runs to win off the final over, to be bowled by Tinashe Muchawaya, whose first over had cost 27 runs.

Taylor began with two sixes and a single, but Muchawaya kept his head and Malan for once couldn’t rise to the occasion, missing the fourth delivery and only getting a leg-bye off the fifth.

Taylor needed to hit a six off the final delivery to equal the scores and force a super over, but he could only get the ball away for a single, and the match and the tournament belonged to the Tigers.

Joburg Bangla Tigers – 129-5 in 10 overs (Mohammad Shahzad 44, Kusal Perera 33, Hazratullah Zazai 19; Nicholson Gordon 2/10, Amir Hotak 1/14, Qais Ahmed 1/24)

Cape Town Samp Army – 124-2 in 10 overs (Dawid Malan 62*, Brian Bennett 36, Jack Taylor 23*; Adam Milne 2/18)

Zim Afro T10: Munsey Shatters Records, Big Wins for Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers & NYS Lagos

George Munsey put on an absolute masterclass at the Harare Sports Club on Day 6 of the second season of the Zim Afro T10, as he scored the first century ever in the history of the competition which helped the Harare Bolts post a record total, and in the process knocked out the Durban Wolves.

After that the Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers were clinical against the Bulawayo Brave Jaguars, and the NYS Lagos also put in a fine all-round performance to pick up an important win against the Cape Town Samp Army.

Batting first, the Harare Bolts made good use of the conditions, and started brightly. Lahiru Milantha (13) and Janishka Perera (24) scored freely in the initial overs, before George Munsey decided to take charge.

The Scotsman, who is well known for his ability to hit a long ball, put on a masterclass in attacking, as he scored a 38-ball 100, and remained unbeaten. Munsey smashed 10 maximums and six boundaries, as the Bolts posted a record 173/2 in 10 overs.

In response, the Wolves made a solid start as well as Sharjeel Khan (25) and Will Smeed (16) attacked from the get-go. Colin Munro added a quickfire 32, after which the Bolts’ bowling attack tightened the screws and closed out a comfortable 54-run win, with Richard Gleeson finishing as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/2.

In the second game of the day, there were more runs of course, as the Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers’ top order put in a remarkable performance.

The duo of Hazratullah Zazai (49*) and captain Sikandar Raza (51*) played freely, and ensured the Bulawayo Brave Jaguars’ bowlers would not have much to cheer about.

The two of them stitched together a fantastic unbeaten 108-run stand for the third wicket, which propelled the score to 128/2. In response the David Warner led side, found it hard to build momentum.

Tinashe Muchawaya had Warner’s number yet again, and George Linde picked three more wickets to keep the Jaguars in check. Carlos Brathwaite top scored for the Jaguars with 18 runs, as they were restricted to 91/9 in their 10 overs, giving the Tigers a resounding 37-run win.

The runs continued to flow in the final game of the day, as the NYS Lagos took first strike and openers Rassie van der Dussen (51) and Avishka Fernando (66) played brilliantly.

The openers used all their experience and attacked the right deliveries, putting on an opening partnership of 122. The NYS Lagos finished with 133/2 in their 10 overs.

In response, the Cape Town Samp Army started brightly as Brian Bennett scored a fast paced 40. After that Jack Taylor added 37 more, but the likes of Oshane Thomas bowled brilliantly and restricted the big hitters. Eventually, NYS Lagos came away with a 42-run win on the day, and secured qualification for the next round.

Raza stars with bat and ball as Tigers maul Samp Army

Dynamic innings from Avishka Fernando and Najibullah Zadran gave NYS Lagos an advantage they never lost as they beat Durban Wolves by 10 runs in Tuesday’s first match of the Zim Afro T10 tournament at Harare Sports Club.

NYS Lagos won by 10 runs

NYS Lagos – 134-5 in 10 overs (Najibullah Zadran 43, Avishka Fernando 36, Ryan Burl 22*; Rohid Khan 2/13, Dawlat Zadran 2/16, Mohammad Irfan 1/23)

Durban Wolves – 124-5 in 10 overs (Sharjeel Khan 59, Regis Chakabva 27*, Will Smead 13; Thisara Perera 2/17, Matiullah Khan 1/15, Akhilesh Bogudum 1/16)

Fernando opened the innings and, although he lost the prolific Rassie van der Dussen for two, scored 36 off 16 balls in the first four overs.

Zadran followed up his good work with 43 off 17 balls, and with bits and pieces lower down the order Lagos ran up a total of 124 for five wickets.

This was despite tight bowling from Dawlat Zadran and Rohid Khan, who took two wickets each for 16 and 13 runs respectively.

Wolves’ opener Sharjeel Khan did his best for his team by making the highest score of the match, 59 off 30 balls, and Regis Chakabva chimed in down the order with 27 not out off 11 balls, but the middle order could not do much, and they could total only 124 for five wickets before their overs ran out.

Thisara Perera was the best of the bowlers with two wickets for 17 runs.

                            ___________________________________

Bulawayo Brave Jaguars – 96-8 in 10 overs (Nick Hobson 35, Anamul Haque 22, Carlos Braithwaite 13; Shehan Jayasuriya 2/6, Richard Gleeson 2/19, Brandon Mavuta 1/5)

Harare Bolts – 102-3 in 7.4 overs (Dasun Shanaka 47, Lahiru Milantha 20, James Neesham 17*; Daryn Dupavillon 2/7, Akila Dananjaya 1/20)

Harare Bolts won by seven wickets

A powerfully hit innings of 47 off 18 balls, including six sixes and a four, by Dasun Shanaka swept Harare Bolts to an easy victory over Bulawayo Braves Jaguars by seven wickets with 14 balls to spare.

The Australian David Warner played his first match for Jaguars, but was quickly out for two as they lost five wickets for 39 runs in 4.2 overs.

Warner and Kobey Herft were both dismissed in the single over bowled by Shehan Jayasuriya, whose two wickets for six runs caused great damage.

Had Nick Hobson not come in to hit 35 off 17 balls, their innings would have been a disaster – as it was, they reached 96 for eight wickets.

Bolts lost two wickets for 23 in the first two overs, but then Shanaka took charge and, helped by 17 not out from James Neesham, took his team to victory.

Cape Town Samp Army – 82-7 in 10 overs (Rohan Mustafa 28, Qais Ahmed 12, Brian Bennett 11; Sikandar Raza 3/11, Tinashe Muchawaya 1/8, Karim Janat 1/8)

Joburg Bangla Tigers won by five wickets

Sikandar Raza finally found his form and took three wickets before hitting a dazzling 62 not out off 30 balls to bring a five-wicket victory for Joburg Bangla Tigers over Cape Town Samp Army.

The Samp Army innings never got going apart from Rohan Mustafa, who made 28 before being caught off Raza, who also removed Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ben Curran for only nine runs.

They could manage only 82 for seven wickets, leaving the Tigers with an easy target.

Tigers nearly messed it up, though, as they lost three wickets for 16 runs before Raza took charge, hitting four sixes and six fours as he scored all but 22 of his team’s runs.

David Willey took two wickets for nine runs in his two overs, but victory came for Tigers with eight balls to spare.
