Special Ramadaan Pop Up Channel On DStv

At the start of the holy month of Ramadaan, DStv’s Muslim viewers have an additional channel to reinforce their month of fasting and reflection with the launch  of Ramadaan TV.

Liz Dziva, publicity and public relations manager of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, said the pop-up channel would operate from Friday April 1  for 4 weeks to the Day of Eid, with the sighting of the moon at the end of Ramadan.

“Content will be sourced from within Southern Africa as well as internationally,” she said.

Ramadaan TV is available on DStv channel 346 to Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Family and Access customers.

“Programming includes live prayer broadcasts, live pledge lines, messages from leading Islamic scholars, daily Quraan programmes and live iftaar programmes.”

Why MultiChoice removed Russia Today from its News Platform

Multichoice Wednesday pulled the plug on Russian state-owned news channel Russia Today and have given a reason for the decision.

In a statement released MultiChoice said this was as a result of sanctions imposed on Russia by the European Union.

“MultiChoice confirms that as of today, March 2 2022, RT (Channel 407) shall not be carried on the DStv platform until further notice.

“Sanctions imposed on Russia by the European Union has led to the global distributor of the channel ceasing to provide the broadcast feed to all suppliers, including MultiChoice,” a spokesperson for MultiChoice said.

RT was formerly known as Russia Today.

The EU has banned the RT and Sputnik channels in an unprecedented move as part of many sanctions imposed by many western countries amid Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

MultiChoice Adds Zimbabwean Channel 3Ktv to the DStv Platform

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance its customers’ television viewing experience and offer Zimbabweans content that resonates with them, MultiChoice is excited to announce the launch of 3Ktv, a Zimbabwean channel, on DStv.

From 28 February 2022, DStv Zimbabwe subscribers will be able to watch 3Ktv on Channel 293. The channel will broadcast content which will include local drama, reality shows, news, sport, educational programmes, documentaries and will spotlight a wide range of Zimbabwean topics and people. Some of the exciting highlights to look out for include:

Tangled: A local telenovela about the apparently not so perfect lives of two best friends. Their lives are unravelled to the point of murder when a boyfriend’s overprotective mother threatens him to choose between career and love.

I Can Act: A reality talent show for aspiring actors

Mawombera: This is a drama series of a poor family in the rural areas with two kids. The wife, Sandra, is educated and is advised by the husband to pursue her education. Eventually she graduates, gets a better job in town and husband is happy. Things turn bad when she starts neglecting the family without realizing it.

Zim’ Best Barber: Zim’s best barber is a reality game show in which 16 barbers compete for a prize worth of start-up barbershop equipment, through completing fun tasks and a process of elimination.

Zim Uncovered: A travelogue (tour) of Zimbabwe’s cities, towns, growth points and suburbs bringing out the historical backgrounds, cultures of the people who live there as well as how certain places became popular.

Bachi Committee: A talk show programme focusing on issues that affect men in today’s society and the changing roles due to globalisation.  It’s an all men’s talk show.

Emmanuel Nyamayedenga, General Manager for 3Ktv highlighted that the channel aims to be the most followed, trusted and innovative station in Zimbabwe.

“We will share compelling stories about our beautiful country as we leverage on the exciting partnership between 3Ktv and MultiChoice.

The synergy is envisaged to promote the shared rich cultural diversity amongst our people over and above the technical and production support for the creative industry in television and film in Zimbabwe he said.

“This is an exciting development that will further enhance the range of Zimbabwean-produced content available to DStv viewers,” said Norman Raisbeck, MultiChoice Zimbabwe General Manager.

3Ktv will launch on the DStv platform at 6am on Monday February 28 on channel 293 and will be broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from its new studios based in Harare. It will be available to viewers on all DStv bouquets, from Premium through to Lite.

“As Africa’s leading entertainment platform and most loved storyteller, we continuously seek opportunities to provide local and inspired content to Zimbabwean audiences. Our goal with this channel is to enhance the customer’s viewing experience even more, and at great value” said Raisbeck.

MultiChoice continues to tell the African story through its hyper local strategy which aims to provide a platform for home grown African content thereby continuing to grow the African film industry.

Celebrating Meta #Changemakers from Zimbabwe ,Zambia & South Africa

Meta has announced the launch of its first #Changemakers campaign – a collection of short films, aimed at illustrating the innovative spirit of six inspirational #Changemakers from Zimbabwe and across Southern Africa.

The featured #Changemakers have launched new businesses online and re-engineered their initiatives to empower communities during the ongoing health and economic crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been more than a health crisis: it’s an economic crisis that has disproportionately impacted SMBs, creators, and entrepreneurs.

Due to the pandemic, creators and SMBs are facing a challenge of a lifetime, but they remain hopeful and are making efforts to adapt by moving online through using Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to innovate, as they seek to ride out the challenges of the pandemic.

The six short films provide a glimpse into the lives of the #Changemakers and celebrate their resilience during this unprecedented time.

Featured in the #Changemakers campaign:

  • Maxwell Chimedza (Zimbabwe) – looked to Facebook and WhatsApp to educate students, when schools closed in Zimbabwe, this increased the demand for his WhatsApp classrooms.
  • KeritaTawana Choga (Zimbabwe) – launched errand-running service,Tuma Kerri, in November 2020. Today, it serves hundreds of customers mostly from the diaspora who want to deliver goods to family and friends in Zimbabwe or get other chores done.

    Kerita Tawana Choga
  • Lulu Wood (Zambia) – (and her husband) started a food blog called the Wood Kitchen on Facebook and Instagram, her audience exploded during lockdown, with more than 112,000 people following her on Instagram and 215,000 on Facebook.
  • Kapasa Musonda (Zambia) – owns vibrant fashion lineMangishi Doll, due to Covid she moved her business completely online, reaching new customers in Zambia and across the world.
  • Davy Tsopo (South Africa) – launchedCakey by Davyon Instagram, after being retrenched from his role as a restaurant cleaner during lockdown.
  • PJ Sabbagha and NamatshegoKhutsoane (South Africa) – from the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC), turned to WhatsApp to host the world’s first arts festival,My Body My Space.

Commenting on the campaign and the importance of empowering SMBs during this time, NunuNtshingila, Regional Director at Meta Africa, said: “We’re proud to play a role in this transformation.

“Our recent study conducted by Genesis Analytics has indicated that 84% of African SMBs that use Meta technologies have reported them to be critical in the growth of their business.

More so, 77% indicated that their business is stronger today because of our technologies. It’s important for us to help SMBs and people who are using Meta technologies as they rebuild, re-engineer, and recover from the ongoing pandemic and economic crisis.

We believe, as these Changemakers have shown, that digital tools and solutions can empower SMBs and creators to find new customers, create revenue streams, and ultimately, reinvent their businesses for a time of flux and change.”

#TisuMaShark: Never A Dull Moment For Barney Mpariwa

0

Helping to discover and launch new talent in the world of entertainment has been both a career mission and a pleasure for Barney Mpariwa, who believes Zimbabwe has a rich seam of talent within its population.

He is the founder and executive director of the StarBrite talent show, which first saw the light in 1990 and has been making a mark on the entertainment industry ever since.

Barney joined ZBC in 1986 and has worked in television and radio production. The StarBrite initiative has been a success story, yielding performers like Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana, Tendai Chidarikire, Rutendo Machiridza, Wilom Tight, and Bryan K.

“I feel the show plays an important role in finding talent and then grooming and launching quality artists into the entertainment industry,” he said.

“It’s helping to build up succeeding generations of artists to follow the leaders like Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo.”

StarBrite is now in its ninth season on Ztv, which is also available on DStv’s channel 280.

“The show has been improving over the years and, with the right support, will grow bigger, better and even more successful,” he said.

Barney’s advice to people who feel they have a talent and would like to have it platformed is simple: take a chance and make use of platforms like StarBrite. It could be the difference between staying hidden away or being discovered and launching a career in entertainment.”

He comes from a large family, the youngest of 10 children. Now married, he and his wife have two children, with one more to join them soon.

DStv plays a significant role in his life, and he gains much enjoyment from the variety of content.

“I am excited to be a part of the DStv Shark tribe. There is never a dull moment, because there is something for everyone. We have much arguing over what to watch together. And, of course, the DStv App enables me to watch my favourite shows on the go,” he said.

“I am a sports fan who enjoys athletics, rugby,  tennis and most especially soccer. Other channels my family enjoys are Zee World, National Geographic and channels with all the exciting series. And definitely we watch and enjoy talent shows like X Factor, Idols and the ‘got talent’ series.”

Heavily committed to StarBrite, he values being able to save time.

He said: The DStv App provides convenience by enabling me to check my balance, manage my account and stay connected. DStv gives me access to choice and value for money.”

ZIMBABWE EMERGE VICTORS IN THRILLER

Put in to bat in their Group B fixture, Gargi Bhogle and Mahika Kandanala gave USA a solid start in the Powerplay, putting on 38 runs for the first wicket before departing in quick succession in a group match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021 in Harare on Thursday.

They kept losing wickets at regular intervals, losing Lisa Ramjit and Shebani Bhaskar in a span of six overs.

The wicket of skipper Sindhu Sriharsha for 22 triggered a collapse as the rest of the batting unit fell apart. Tara Norris offered some resistance with a 23-ball 18 which included three boundaries but found no support from the lower order.

USA, who were 89/4 at one point, were skittled out for 131 with Loreen Tshuma the pick of the bowlers with figures of 10-2-19-3.

Modester Mupachikwa and Sharne Mayers got Zimbabwe off to blazing starting, stitching together 57 runs of the target in under 10 overs.

Despite losing both openers soon after, it looked like the hosts were cruising to victory before they collapsed in stunning fashion. Moksha Chaudhary ran riot with the ball, claiming four wickets in a span of four overs. From 73/2, Zimbabwe were seven down for 87.

At this stage, every small partnership was worth gold. Precious Marange and Loryn Phiri added 10 runs for the eighth wicket before Marange and Nomvelo Sibanda put on 18 runs for the ninth.

Once Marange got out, it was down to the No. 10 and 11 batters Nomvelo Sibanda and Francisca Chipare to get Zimbabwe across the line.

At that point, they still needed 17 runs. Chipare found the ropes twice in the next over to release the pressure and finished the game off in style with a boundary as Zimbabwe got across the line by the barest of margins.

Zimbabwe won by 1 wicket.

Thailand upset Lady Chevrons in world cup Qualifier opener

Zimbabwe women’s cricket team got their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2021 campaign on a bad note losing by 8 runs to Thailand in a fiercely contested match at Harare sports club.

It was a game of fine margins as the host proved to be their worst enemy as they gave Thailand extra runs with their untidy bowling and fielding.

Thailand managed to capitalise from that with 6 of their batters scoring double figures. Natthakan Chatham top-scoring with 48 runs.

While with the bat the Lady Chevrons’ opening pair of Modester Mupachikwa and Sharne Mayers was very slow out of the blocks only managing 49 runs with an extremely low strike rate.

Josephine Nkomo managed to exacerbate things with a decent knock of 56 runs of 66 balls before she was caught behind by Koncharoenkai.

The Zimbabwe skipper Mary Anne Musonda was in inspired form with the bat scoring 69 runs of  65, but it was all in vain as it was not enough to get the team over the line.

The lady chevrons will be hoping for better fortunes on Thursday 25 November when they face the United States of America at Takashinga Sports Club.
