Rapper Mudiwa Hood was yesterday elected to the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) board with the most votes.
The musician and businessman received 39 votes and he was closely followed by fellow singer Alexio Gwenzi also known as Goodchild with 32 votes.
The youthful board members were joined by other elected members who include Albert Nyathi (27votes), Philip Chifumbu (25votes), and Batani First aka First Farai (10 votes) to make the first five elected members.
Other contesting members Dingumuzi Phuti, Janet Manyowa, and Nathaniel Ncube got tied with eight votes each and another round was held to complete the list of board members.
Janet Manyowa was eventually voted as the sixth and only female board member.
The Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) is an association of composers and publishers of music that was created with the purpose of protecting the rights of musicians under the copyright law.
The association protects the performing rights of authors and collects royalties on their behalf.
Meanwhile, ZIMURA announced that at least ZWL$89 million will be distributed among musicians beginning Wednesday.
Said ZIMURA director Polisile Ncube: “We have just finished the allocation and beginning Wednesday we are going to be distributing the money to the artists.
“And the top earner will get around ZWL$700 000 and of course, other artists whose music hasn’t been playing will get nothing.
“The second disbursement will be due in August or September when we collect revenues from the small broadcasters,” Ncube said.
