WWE Legend Rey Mysterio Sr. Passes Away At 66

The wrestling world is mourning the death of Mexican legend Miguel Ángel López Días, also known as Rey Misterio Sr.

 

The news was confirmed by his son, WWE superstar Rey Misterio Jr., on social media on December 20, 2024.

Rey Misterio Jr. shared the sad announcement with fans, stating:

“Friends and family, I’m sad to share that my father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning… more updates to come. Thank you.”

The post has since drawn an outpouring of tributes from fans, friends, and fellow wrestlers who admired the iconic figure’s contributions to the sport.

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, the prominent Mexican wrestling promotion where Rey Misterio Sr. made a lasting impact, also expressed its sorrow. The organisation posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“We are saddened by the passing of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. We send our sincerest condolences to his loved ones and keep him in our thoughts for his eternal rest.”

Rey Misterio Sr. was not only a significant figure in Mexican Lucha Libre but also played an essential role in taking Mexican wrestling to the international stage.

He was known for his high-flying wrestling style, which became a defining feature of Lucha Libre, and his ability to connect with audiences across the globe.

He gained recognition in Mexico’s top promotions, including the World Wrestling Association (WWA) and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

Misterio Sr.’s influence extended beyond the borders of Mexico. He was one of the early pioneers of Lucha Libre in the United States, competing in World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

He participated in various notable events, including the 1990 Starrcade and the Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup tournament, where he represented Mexico alongside Konnan.

They made it to the second round before being eliminated by the Steiner Brothers.

In addition to his achievements in the ring, Misterio Sr. was deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of wrestlers.

His nephew, Rey Mysterio Jr., often spoke about the significant role his uncle played in shaping his career.

Rey Mysterio Jr. has credited his uncle with giving him the famous ring name and training him in the gym alongside other legendary figures in Mexican wrestling, such as Psicosis, Halloween, and Konnan.
