‘Dance with John Cole at Home’ an instant Hit

Award-winning choreographer and dancer John Cole has embarked on a Dance at home with John Cole initiative aimed at giving his audience a healthy entertainment during the 21-day lockdown.

In an interview with Zimbuzz in Harare recently, John Cole said he had seen a positive response from his audience since he began the classes.

“The intake is well received and it’s also how we connect with others out there, digital marketing is the new movement in reach growth and expansion as an artist”, he said.

Dance helps one to relax and in this case John Cole says his aim is to reach and enrich the audience that he would not have normally been able to connect with in a private dance class or group level.

“Anything I teach online stays online so consumption is and will be available at a click of a button,” said John Cole.

“The day I announced the dance at home initiative the internet went ablaze with audiences from UK, South Africa, Canada, Zimbabwe and other parts of the world showing signs that the John Cole brand is appreciated and we still growing”, he said with a confident smile.

He also highlighted that the dance classes are targeted at expanding his online presence during the Lockdown.

“Yes our first online dance class had a huge turnout, we had managed to reach 13 000 and this attracted bloggers and corporates, “he said.

He urged artists to embrace the lockdown: “Work on your craft and your trade as an artist in the business, capitalise on the Lockdown in any way you can”, concluded John Cole.

What is Houseparty? The New hit Group Video Chat App

Houseparty has become the hit app of the coronavirus shutdown, billed as a “face-to-face social network” the app is gaining users rapidly because of its simple ability to host easy group video chat.

It’s appealing because it’s simple to use. You can dip in and out of a “house” rather than having to make a call, plus the barrier to entry is low requiring only basic personal details (yet you can find your friends very easily).

As you’ll hear, you can also play games with your quarantine buddies which is one of the key features.

It’s not a new app though – it’s actually been around since 2016 and in 2019 was bought by Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite.

How do you get friends on Houseparty?

Houseparty uses your friends on other social networks – like Facebook or Snapchat – to make you aware that your friends have signed up, so once you sign up you’re quickly aware of others already using it and vice versa. You can send your friends an invitation link alternatively.

It isn’t connected to your phone number (although you can import your phone contacts) and it’s specifically designed for social chats unlike something like Zoom that’s a business app that’s been repurposed for group socials in these difficult times.

And as we mentioned you don’t need to make a call like on Skype, WhatsApp or FaceTime – you can simply drop in.

How does it work?

Once you’ve found your friends, the app alerts you when your friends are “in the house” and so ready to chat. It’s the same when you open your app – your friends are alerted.

In normal life this could be a bit annoying we feel, but in a quarantined world we found it’s quite refreshing.

You can then jump right into a call. You can also join other “houseparties” that your friends might be part of, so it’s a lot more fluid than other services which have rigid groups.

What is facemail?

You can send people facemails – yes, really – that are just video messages that appear as soon as the recipient opens up the app.

What does Houseparty work on?

The app is available for iOS and Android as well as macOS. There’s also a Google Chrome extension so you can use it on PCs, too. There’s also a web-based version in beta that you can use with other browsers.

The app is free to download and has shot up the charts on both Google Play and the App Store. At the time of writing it’s amongst the top downloaded apps on both stores.

Here are a few thoughts from some Zimbabwean users who have had an experience on the App.

“I think its the best app i have seen during this lockdown we have something good that is going to entertain us l love it,” said Musician and Actress Faith Candy.

On how different the app is from the usual social media, Faith Candy thinks House party is more fun.

“This one has so much fun, lol talking from my own experience, I clicked the join button and it was already connected and there was someone on a video chat unlike other apps where you have to wait for a person to accept your call,” she added.

Mai Gamu, on the other hand, thinks the app has no set order.

“This app has no order at all,” she said as she chuckled.

“It doesn’t offer you the option to accept or reject a call, you just find yourself on someone’s video chat,” she added.

Zimbuzz Sports Editor Brian Matamba is enjoying every bit of it.

“I think it an amazing app, somehow you feel more connected than other apps, it’s actually a house party,” he said.

“Because in reality at a house party you meet people you know as well as new people, its that experience of meeting mutuals friends at a  part which gives this app a true party feeling,” added Brian Matamba.

Asaph’s discography narrowing the Tribal Gap — ‘Like So’ Review

Asaph real name Tafadzwa Tarukwana’s banger Mambo broke the deadlock for Bulawayo rappers in a way that remains key in elevating the city’s music on national platforms.

Asaph is easily one of the top emcees in Zim hip-hop right now. His work speaks greatly on his zeal to bridge the tribal gap and uplift hip hop beyond the Zim borders.

“..Some gon judge me by my last name (Tarukwana) and the other city thinking I’m Ndebele..” he says in the new song – Like So/Mhoroi

The content in the song unpacks his discography to be the ‘..Tuku of Hip hop using rap to unite the nation..’

In as much as identity crisis connotations are alive in his music, the effort to paint the tribal line is remarkable and will assist his rise onto the mainstream of Zimbabwean entertainment.

Like So/Mhoroi is undoubtedly some solid and authentic rap which puts the rapper up there with some of the land’s greatest English rappers.

The mbira rap beat in Like So is an artistic feel that reveals his unending affection for the late Chiwoniso Mararire.

In as much as this genre is a borrowed phenomenon, the effort to blend it with our culture is classic and reinforces the fact that Asaph is a champion in this dispensation.

His concern is to inspire the nation with rap. Like So/Mhoroi is a song that can start a day because of its vibe and prayers in it, Mhoroi to a new day when the sun starts to shine.

The video opens with a group of journalists/ news reporters rushing to be at the front row for the media briefing by The People’s Rapper.

The multi-award-winning rapper who for a record has been dishing out clean and impeccable visuals didn’t disappoint judging by the positive response he’s got from fans.

Hard work has brought him connections that are integral in the journey of any musician and thus we have seen him earn a brand ambassadorial role for ZOL – “we connected like so, We connected in the streets”.

The rapper’s popularity is no longer in doubt after Zimbabweans voted for him massively to see him perform at the much-awaited Burna Boy gig..he sings “..every show I kill them with sing alongs, coz I’m fire they put me on the Burna show.”

Zim hip-hop has proved to be the genre to watch now because of its capacity to document urban Zimbabwean lifestyles.

Asaph is the brains behind the Burg Boiz movement, a voice that represents modernity and spins in the CBD, the ladies “the chicks go crazy when they see me, they wanna pose for a pic” and hustles.

Like So is a watch out track for gongs at the end of year hip hop awards. The bar has been set too high Like So.

Rachel J opens up on the Mukupe – Bushiri Issue

Businesswoman and songstress Rachel J’s family has opened up for the first time refuting cheating claims levelled against her by estranged living in boyfriend and former finance deputy minister Terrence Mukupe.

Mukupe accused Rachel J of infidelity saying she slept with South Africa-based preacher Prophet Shepher Bushiri, a claim which Bushiri has since dismissed.

The family also dismissed as false claims that she was carrying Bushiri’s baby.

In a statement, the family said they delayed in responding to Mukupe’s allegations on social media because of her pregnancy which was due anytime soon.

They said she was still traumatized after Mukupe allegedly went to her house and attacked her.

“We as the Rachel J family, have decided to come out and address the accusations being levelled against her that are being circulated on social media by a Terence Mukupe.

“It has taken us this long because, we wanted our daughter and sister to give birth in peace, and the fact that Rachel J being the private person she is, didn’t want to get involved in this social media fiasco, and also her dealing with the emotional trauma after she was attacked by Terence Mukupe at one of her residences and she had to seek a protection order against Terence Mukupe.

“We want to state that these are malicious and defamatory statements issued. As you know, Terence Mukupe relies on unseemly and ungodly false attacks on others to maintain relevance.

“These allegations are unequivocally false, totally unsubstantiated and uncorroborated, and it’s a malicious and desperate attack on Rachel J and our family by a disgruntled individual who swore before the Police and witnesses that he would do everything in his power even if it meant fabricating material to destroy Rachel J, anyone close to her as well as discrediting her to her business contacts. He swore if he cannot have Rachel J no man can have her.

“Reason being Rachel J had terminated their relationship. Because she had discovered that Terence Mukupe had once again impregnated Tracy Winterboer, who just gave birth a week ago a few days before Rachel J’s giving birth.

“This being the second child sired with the same woman during Rachel J’s relationship with Terence Mukupe. What’s disturbing is he secretly moved this woman to South Africa near Rachel’s place of residence so that he can be close to her.

“What hurts us is the treatment she is getting from this man who constantly cheated and humiliated her by siring 4 kids whilst dating her, which she embraced looked after and welcomed into her own home. There is nothing Rachel hasn’t done for his kids, from sending them to school, to buying them food and clothes.

The family said urged Mukupe to not humiliate himself since he was a father.

“Terence Mukupe should realise that he is a father, he should stop this humiliating behaviour and take care of his 10 kids. For a man blessed with so many kids, he must stay away from public humiliation and realise that his kids will have no one to look up to and also for a man who claims to love his so called wife but humiliate her in public over infidelity whilst he was sleeping with different women in her office, it is puzzling.

“Terence Mukupe is no stranger to rejecting his unborn babies. He only comes through claiming the children are his after the expenses have been covered. What annoys us is the fact that Terence continues to deny this child in public whilst privately he and his family are requesting to be a part of this child’s life, claiming it’s theirs.”

“On the issue of cultural activity and occultism it’s really shocking coming from a man, with incisions (nyora) all round his waist, who jumps from sangoma to sangoma every weekend trying to attain evil powers to become a President.

“Do not let us spill your beans. Kindly advise us on where we can deliver your tsvimbo and black and red occult (machira emudzimu) cloths which you left at our daughter’s previous residence.

“Do not deny this as your relatives who stayed with Rachel J have all the knowledge of your occult activities. He became violent after Rachel had cut off all financial support towards him, his children and baby mothers. After having lost Rachel everything including vehicles he became a violent man. No one of any gender, adult or child deserves this kind of abuse. Attacking a defenceless woman is a sign of weakness and should never be supported in our society.“

  1. Rachel J was never married to Terence Mukupe, formally or customarily. She is a single woman. As family we have never met Terence Mukupe nor has he ever set foot in any of our houses. He should not confuse dating to marriage. We are grateful for Rachel refusing to marry this man, because of his infidelity and misuse of her wealth. Initially we were shocked because Rachel has never dated a politician. She has always believed in love, and not relationships based on money since she is an independent woman.
  2. Because of Rachel’s naivety she allowed this man to move in to her home, after he had been divorced and kicked out like a dog. Having moved in without anything in his name, she transformed his life into a respectable member of society with something to his name and his family is aware of this. Rachel has always been a serial entrepreneur with vast business interests in the cleaning industry, mining, fashion, media, transport and logistics. She welcomed the idea to work with this man and fought by all means to build a business empire with him.
  3. As a family we are in deep shock and distress, with the developments that are taking place, considering the amount of resources poured into the life of Terence Mukupe by Rachel J. Just to name a few we are all aware of what went into the last political campaign which she sponsored from the massive billboards, regalia, media, campaign vehicles, sarongs (mazambia) and newspaper. These resources could have been put to better use as a family. Rachel has always protected Terence reputation in making people believe, he was the one taking care of her. Yet he solely relied and lived off Rachel, funding his 5 baby mother’s, kids and girlfriends.
  4. The claims being levelled at Rachel J, of being impregnated by Prophet Bushiri are unbelievable with his evidence stating that they met in 2018, how is it possible for her to carry a pregnancy for two years.

“We are confidently waiting for Terence Mukupe to through for a DNA test. Terence statement that Rachel asked for forgiveness is false.

“The claims that Terence Mukupe ceded R100 000 are totally baffling for a man who doesn’t even have a property to his own name and was failing to pay school fees for his children by that time.

“Whose house was repossessed by the bank and Rachel has been paying rentals for his family to still be able to continue living in that property. He has been failing to clear his debts and the lawyers have been communicating with Rachel who has been paying those debts. “

“Terence Mukupe should give us evidence of the plane tickets he paid for Rachel to go to Malawi, and also evidence of him expressing interest to do business with Prophet Bushiri whom he has never met. No one stands to gain from publicly humiliating someone, instead it leaves scars.

“Terence Mukupe should realise that Rachel J is not only a business woman but also a mother, and the damage he has caused is irreparable. He has caused great emotional pain to her daughter and this will leave a scar for life. Regardless of the fact that Rachel J has decided to stay in recluse and quiet over this issue we felt it in our best interest as a family to come out and clear a few issues which were raised.

“This is a truly hurtful time for us, because we know the type of a person Rachel is who has done nothing but show love and commitment to this man. Wisdom is understanding that relationships come to an end, and this should be done amicably without abusing the other partner. We should be the ones fighting and humiliating him, because he never looked after Rachel instead it was vice versa to a man who showed no love and appreciation.

“We pray that God guides Terence Mukupe in the right path. The more that we choose not to talk about domestic violence, the more we shy away from the issue, the more we lose.”

#NAMA19 – Behold, Hip Hop’s Creative Explosion

There was no escaping the juggernaut influence that Hip Hop had in 2019 as Ti Gonzi was crowned the Outstanding Male Artist by the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA)

That a hip hop artist was accorded such a high honour by the country’s biggest arts awards, NAMA is a testament of the ever-growing influence of the genre.

After being robbed of the same at the Zimbabwe Music Awards, Ti Goniz has now won the Best Male accolade three times in this Awards calendar, Zim Hip Hop Awards, Star FM Music Awards and the recent NAMA.

2019 kicked off in grand fashion, ushering in the hip hop monster collaboration Kure on February 23 by Ti Gonzi and Ishan.

Barely a month after Kure’s release, Ti Gonzi would get attacked and kidnapped by robbers who left him for dead.

By that time fellow collaborator, Ishan together with the rest of the country were celebrating 200 000 thousand views of Kure.

All of Kure’s successes would happen whilst Ti Gonzi was battling for his life, he was stabbed in the head by the assailants and had to have his skull removed and put inside his belly for sometime before it was stitched back to his head.

The rapper then had a miraculous recovery.

As if he had a premonition of what would happen to him he drooped Kufamba Murima early April, a song he had recorded prior to the attack that happened in March.

His story and undeniable talent propelled the hip hop genre to higher heights and the following month in May he made an appearance at dancehall singer Enzo Ishall’s 25th birthday bash at the City Sports Centre and gave a wild performance to an equally wild reception.

A week later after making a surprise appearance at Enzo Ishall’s birthday he dropped the song Mabazooka , Enzo Nema Pumacol. The song earned him a Best Verse at the Zim Hip Hop Awards.

What followed was a spike in demand as the rapper went on to do about 30 collaborations with other inter-genre artists from ExQ, Willis Watafi, Ngoni Kambarami among others.

A flurry of congratulatory messages was sent Ti Gonzi’s way the entire weekend as the genre celebrated another victorious year.

Meanwhile, the 2020 NAMA Awards have left an indelible mark on the hearts and memories of art lovers after pulling off an amazing show.

The Awards were organised by Jacaranda Culture and Media Entertainment who are the event managers for the next 5 years under the executive leadership of Napoleon Nyanhi.

The event which took place at the Harare International Conference Centre was hosted by TV personalities Mbo Mahocs and Leroy Gopal.

Fashion Police Ahead! Samantha Tshuma speaks on NAMA Duty

Award season will officially end this Saturday with the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) capping what looks set to be an unforgettable show.

While the main event is to honour those that excelled in the arts in the past year, Longtime style stars and newcomers will take to the red carpet to show off their fashion imaginations.

NAMA organisers announced Samantha Tshuma and Gilmore Tee as the official NAMA Red Carpet Fashion Police.

With plenty of stylish stars descending on the HICC red carpet, this year NAMAs have promised all the ingredients of a world-class show, this of course anchored on the trust the public has in Napoleon ‘DJ Napster’ Nyanhi of Jacaranda Culture and Media Corporation who are behind the 2020 edition.

Zimbuzz caught up with the Miss Zimbabwe 2010, Model and Image Consultant Samantha Tshuma from her base in Bulawayo.

Just what is red carpet wear, what should one wear to awards and what are they going to be looking for as they go about fashion policing.

She gave us all the answers.

“As fashion police, to be honest, we cannot wait to see what our creative fashion designers and fashion houses have in store for us. It’s quite exciting as our fashion industry has grown over the years,” enthused Samantha.

She explained why the red carpet is such an important part of any Awards ceremony.

“The red carpet is very important as this is why it has a red carpet and this means high profile dressing. Also an important product placement area for fashion designers,” she said.

As the Miss Bulawayo 2009, Miss Tourism 2010 and Miss World Zimbabwe 2010 she must have clocked some serious red carpet time in her illustrious fashion career, and she rightfully had a word or two of advice.

“Ladies should wear longer full-Length dresses, you can never go wrong with sequin for a red carpet look, always does the trick. Men should wear suits, but not necessarily jackets and ties,” she said.

A family that slays together…Samantha Tshuma with her babies

And for those not sure what to put on she got you too.

“I think keep it simple don’t over complicate it especially if fashion is just not your thing, black/reds /whites sometimes they tend to be forgiving colours and one thing that’s important is to choose a silhouette that fits your body type,” added the Bulawayo beauty.

For the fashion addicts, she shared her thoughts on what she thinks are the trends this fashion season.

“With a season drawing heavily on androgynous silhouettes, the tuxedo is making a comeback, this time undergoing a couture renaissance with chic sleeve detailing, sculpted shoulders and sequins,” she said.

But again we are a people that love looking good and our fashion police agree that over the years, red carpet looks have been nothing but pleasing.

“Over the years, it has been getting better and better, amazing actually, Zimbabweans definitely know how to dress up for such events. Quite astonishing,” she expressed.

And she, of course, she had to give us a parting a shot, and it was one from a fashion guru who has seen it all.

“Don’t try to dress for the body you want or the body you used to have. Dress for the body you have right now.”
