Harare hosts the Communication Training on the ARIPO Regional Intellectual Property Rights System

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and the Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project in Africa (AfrIPI) are hosting a Communication Training on the ARIPO Regional Intellectual Property Rights System from 8 to 10 November 2022 at the ARIPO Secretariat in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Representatives from ARIPO Member and Observer States are attending the event presentially. Among others, participants include members of the National IP Offices, Government communicators, and the media from Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cape Verde, The Kingdom of Eswatini, The Gambia, Ghana.

Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The Communication Training is the first of its kind at ARIPO and the region. It has been positively welcomed by the participants, who feel it is important for communicators to learn the technical side of Intellectual Property (IP) and how to demystify it to the general public.

The general public needs to understand the importance and impact of intellectual property in their daily lives.

Additionally, there is a need for government communicators and the media to be equipped to effectively communicate the ARIPO Regional Intellectual Property Rights System and the positive effects of the AfrIPI project to their audiences which can be used for awareness creation at a national, regional, and global level.

Many people are unaware and misinformed about Intellectual Property. For example, Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and the creative sector are losing out on the benefits of intellectual property.

“Communication plays a significant role in building respect and awareness of intellectual property rights. Without effective communication, the business sector, including SMEs, innovation hubs, and Research & Development institutions, will not readily be aware of intellectual property rights and how these rights can benefit their businesses and sustainably sustain their national economies.

At AfrIPI, we are committed to help the Africa communication community to make the most of IP promotion,” said Aida Galindo, AfrIPI Project Leader.

“Counterfeit products, which don’t comply with intellectual property rules, can threaten consumers’ health and, in some cases, lives. Serious dangers have been linked to counterfeit products ingested by consumers (food, drink, medicines) or put directly on the skin (cosmetics, fragrances).

People in the creative sector, such as artists and designers, are also affected by infringers who claim ownership of their work that is not protected, for instance. Subsequently, intellectual property is a subject that matters to everyone, and it is in your hands, as communicators, to share this message,” added Aida Galindo.

“In Africa, IP awareness can transform lives by helping reduce poverty, creating employment, and accelerating economic growth. For this reason, we are intentionally conducting this training to ensure that, ultimately, we are all well-versed with the mandate of ARIPO, as well as the IP system and its potential benefits,” stated Mr. Bemanya Twebaze, Director General of ARIPO.

“As will be demonstrated in this training, IP can be leveraged as a tool to facilitate Africa’s development. This is made possible by providing incentives to inventors and creators and facilitating the disclosure of knowledge and the transfer of technology and know-how,” added Mr. Bemanya Twebaze.

This Communication Training on the ARIPO Regional Intellectual Property Rights System will review those rights, including patents, trademarks, copyright and related rights, utility models, industrial designs, geographical indications, plant varieties, and trade secrets, and how to communicate them to the public.

The training will also cover the ARIPO protocols and their respective scopes. Moreover, two seasoned trainers in the field of communication from Ghana and Uganda will also share best practices on how to communicate IP effectively.

The objective of this training is to build the capacity of the participants to understand intellectual property issues and raise IP awareness among various stakeholders. It will also help promote respect for IP rights and encourage intellectual property protection.

Tatenda Mahachi bags a Crown Gospel Music Award nomination

Hot on the heels of his new collaboration, musician Tatenda Mahachi has scored a Crown Gospel Music Award nomination.

Mahachi is nominated in the category of Best of Africa together with South African songstress Winnie Mashaba for their song ‘A Friend’ (Shamwari).

The announcement which was made Friday evening placed the talented musician together with Linda Dlamini from Eswatini, Botswana’s Boago Fenju and fellow country Mike Mahendere.

Speaking on his nomination Mahachi expressed joy at the honour.

“The Crown Gospel Music Awards are the biggest gospel music awards in Africa, being recognised with a nomination from such a prestigious institution is humbling,” said Tatenda Mahachi.

“Many thanks go to Dr Winnie Mashaba for the collaboration and her travel to Zimbabwe to shoot the video, our producer Wizy from limitless production and everyone who partnered with us on this project.”

A friend or simply titled Shamwari — is a song of hope and encouragement to everyone who is going through life’s difficult seasons to remember that ultimately there is a friend in Jesus who knows all of our needs.

The song was released a month ago and is receiving good airplay on the radio as well as on TV.

“Our song is still new but has already managed to garner such a nomination, something which speaks well on its message and impact,” explained Mahachi.

“We thank the support of our local radio stations, TVs and the media at large for helping us amplify the project.”

The 15th edition of the Crown Gospel Music Awards will make a return to the Durban ICC on the 27th of November 2022.

Migos Rapper Takeoff Dead At 28, Shot & Killed In Houston

Takeoff one-third of the Migos, has died.

Law enforcement sources and multiple witnesses tell TMZ that Takeoff—whose real name is Kirshnik Khari Ball—was killed in Houston shortly after 2:30 AM. The rapper, 28, was fatally shot at 810 Billiards & Bowling during a dice game.

The outlet adds that Takeoff and his uncle/Unc & Phew cohort Quavo were part of a group gathered on a balcony outside of the bowling alley when an altercation broke out and someone opened fire, shooting Takeoff either in the head or near his head.

He was pronounced dead on the scene. Photos and video have surfaced of Quavo tending to Takeoff after the shooting.

Quavo was uninjured. Houston police have confirmed that two additional victims were located at nearby hospitals. A representative for the artist also confirmed his death to the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Takeoff was born on June 18, 1994, in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and contributed to founding the Migos in 2008. The close-knit group includes Takeoff’s uncle Quavious “Quavo” Keyate Marshall (R), 31, and Quavo’s cousin Offset, 30, born Kiari Kendrell Cephus (C).

Their breakout hit, “Versace,” vaulted them to stardom in 2013 and would later be remixed by Drake. In recent months they’ve appeared to part ways with Quavo and Takeoff releasing music as a duo and Offset releasing solo singles.

Hillzy Links Up With Trevor Dongo for Love Story Part 2

The adages employed to describe the meeting of two seminal musical talents are oft overused and laden in hyperbole.

However, with Trevor Dongo and Hillzy’s Love Story Part 2 all the grandiose superlatives would ring true, on what is set to be one of the biggest releases of the year.

The mid-tempo song produced by GangstaMadeIt and MacDee borrows elements from contemporary African pop elements while the vocals and melodies of the 2 artists harken back to the pure R&B that was popular during Trevor Dongo’s introduction to the music scene in the early 2000s.

Hillzy once again displays his dexterity with his unique verse and bridge where he effortlessly switches between a falsetto tone and romantic raps that would have any girl calling her Tete (Aunt).

The video for Love Story is as clean and impressive as the song. Directed by Space Images Zimbabwe, the video was shot in one location featuring multiple clean yet simple shots of the artists that allow the viewer to focus more on the song’s lyrics and melody

Leo Magozz, King 98, Holy Ten pack in the hits at Unplugged Zimbabwe

Late in the afternoon the October skies opened up and there was a heavy downpour in the City, but Saturday’s Unplugged Zimbabwe was worth sloshing through a muddy field to see.

Nothing in the changing weather patterns could diminish the enthusiasm of people to have a good time and enjoy performances from Adiona, Holy Ten, King 98, Leo Magozz, ExQ and South African artist Costa Tich.

Presented by Coca-Cola, this edition was a perfect platform for hip-hop to affirm the genre’s dominance as they took turns to entertain the crowd at Greendale Sports Clubs.

Some of the genre’s most recognisable names such as Holy Ten, Leo Magozz, King 98 and a surprise appearance by M-Killer gave a red-hot performance.

The mood was bright during Leo Magozz’ set. He kicked things off with tracks from his recently released EP, ‘Drill Lives Matter.’

For those who thought that Leo was a one-trick pony artist having given the country the anthem song ‘Fire Emoji,’ the boy has a solid body of work and it was unsurprising that the crowd was singing along to his new songs.

And of course, he got to perform the hit song ‘Fire emoji’ and there were wild screams!

“The response from people was massive, it was beautiful, I loved the engagement to my new songs,” Leo Magozz told Zimbuzz soon after his Unplugged Zimbabwe performance.

“People will always listen to good music, so I think I have tried to give that to them.”

Soon after came the guy who gave us the big collaborations and has dared to break new ground, nothing seem to faze or stop him – King 98.

He is currently exploring his artistic prowess and has had a dance with both hip hop, afro beats and Amapiano.

Picture – Unplugged Zimbabwe

King 98’s set was evident of a well-travelled artist who has really invested in his art.

It was complete with DJing, record scratching and b-boys wearing all white and chains.

That he was one of the most popular acts on Saturday is a no-brainer, this is his kind of crowd and he has been here before, but even armed with a such experience he brought his best game and energy onto the Unplugged stage.

We managed to have a chat with him just before he could catch his breath soon after his performance.

“We are trying to change the strategy, the vision has always been global, I lost my dad and that was his vision as well,” said King 98.

“My switching genres (to amapiano) just goes to show how talented I am as an artist, I wish you guys could see me in the studio,” he said with a giggle as he tried to catch a breath.

When Holy Ten finally went on stage, the appetite in fans was that of hounds – screams, wild cheers and whistles ate up every other sound in the grounds.

Probably hip-hop’s MVP at the moment.

His performance was skilful and dynamic befitting of a rapper who has delivered most of 2021-22 powerful releases.

For Holy Ten it’s not just a catalogue of hit songs but how he kept up the same level of energy and enthusiasm for the entirety of his set.

He bounced across the stage with an infectious grin as he hyped up the crowd, jumping up and down.

Towards the end he called up his beau Kimberly to join him for a performance of their collaboration ‘Too Scared’ but a shy Kim only performed momentarily, greeted the crowds and left the stage.

Zimbabwe stun Pakistan in last-ball Super 12 thriller

Zimbabwe registered their first Super 12 victory at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 after producing a terrific performance to beat Pakistan by one run in a last-ball thriller at Optus Stadium in Perth on Thursday.

It was a remarkable match in which the advantage swung from one side to the other all the way up to the very final delivery.

Zimbabwe, who won the toss and opted to bat first, made one change to the team that faced South Africa in their first Super 12 game, bringing in Brad Evans in place of Tendai Chatara, while Richard Ngarava was declared fit to play after his mishap in the mud at Hobart.

Wessly Madhevere faced the first ball from Shaheen Shah Afridi and took a three from it, followed by two fours when he had the strike again – 11 runs coming off his first three deliveries.

Craig Ervine then hit the first two balls from Naseem Shah to the boundary to make the score 22 off the first eight deliveries of the match.

The Pakistan bowlers began to tighten up, though, and at the end of the fifth over Ervine tried to pull a particularly fast bouncer from Haris Rauf and skyed the ball to short fine leg – he scored 19 off 19 balls and the score was 42 for one.

Two balls later Madhevere went, trapped lbw by Mohammad Wasim for 17 off 13 balls.

Sean Williams and Milton Shumba now had to build a stand, and they took the score to 64 in the 10th over before Shumba (8) pushed a return catch to Shadab Khan.

Sikandar Raza joined Williams and the two were beginning to get the runs flowing again when two disastrous overs for Zimbabwe followed.

In the 14th over, with the score 95, Williams was bowled attempting a reverse sweep against Khan, and off the next delivery the new man, Regis Chakabva, edged a ball that was brilliantly caught by Babar Azam at slip.

In the next over, Wasim had Raza caught after he had scored nine off 16 balls and Zimbabwe’s troubles deepened when the next ball saw Luke Jongwe playing on to his stumps.

In six deliveries, Zimbabwe’s score had gone from 95 for three to 95 for seven.

With tight bowling boundaries were difficult to come by, but Evans did well to score 19 off 15 balls before in the final over he was bowled attempting a second six off Wasim.

His partner was Ryan Burl, who was not out with 10 off 15 balls at the end.

Ngarava managed three not out and the innings closed at 130 for eight wickets.

The bowlers who did the damage were the paceman Wasim with four for 24 and the leg-spinner Khan with three for 23, both bowling their four overs.

However, with only 130 to bowl at, Zimbabwe’s bowlers fought back magnificently.

After an over each from Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani the Pakistan openers, Mohammad Rizwan and Azam, managed only two singles, plus a wide.

They then hit a four each off Ngarava, but Evans came on and quickly had Azam (4) caught by Burl at point off a superb delivery that seamed away from him.

In the next over Rizwan (14) played a ball from Muzarabani on to his stumps – 23 for two in the fifth over.

After the six-over powerplay, Zimbabwe had restricted Pakistan to 28 for two.

The eighth over saw Jongwe come on and remove Iftikhar Ahmed for five, tickling a ball down the leg side to the keeper – 36 for three.

Shan Masood hit three early boundaries, but with tight bowling and fielding Zimbabwe made them fight for runs and after 10 overs the score was 54 for three.

Masood and Khan now began to rely on good placing for ones and twos, and the score started to rise steadily.

For several overs there were no boundaries, and then Khan got hold of a ball from Raza and hit it for six over long-on.

For a moment it looked like Pakistan were breaking the shackles, but off the very next delivery Khan tried to do it again, only to give a catch straight to Williams at long-off, having made 17 off 14 balls, and the score was now 88 for four.

Haider Ali came in, played across the next delivery from Raza and was out lbw – five down, and 43 more runs needed from the last six overs, the match suddenly well balanced again.

Masood escaped a borderline lbw decision against Evans in the next over, but was then snared by Raza, as he flicked at a faster ball down the leg side and was brilliantly stumped by Chakabva.

This was the most dangerous remaining batter out for 44 off 38 balls, and Pakistan were 94 for six in the 16th over, and in danger now.

Only three runs came off the 17th over from Ngarava, meaning 29 were needed off the last three.

Wasim top-edged a four from Muzarabani and seven runs came off the over, which left 22 off the final two overs.

Ngarava bowled next and, no doubt aiming for a yorker, produced a full toss that Mohammad Nawaz hit for six over fine leg.

Eleven runs came from that over, leaving 11 needed off the final over, which was bowled by Evans.

Nawaz put the first ball away for three and then Wasim hit four and one, leaving three runs needed off the last three balls.

Nawaz missed the fourth ball and then drove at the fifth, giving Ervine a straightforward catch at mid-off, which left one delivery with two runs to tie and three to win.

Afridi came in for the final delivery, which he hit away towards Raza at long-off – the batters went for two, as they had to do, but Afridi was easily run out and Zimbabwe celebrated one of their finest victories after a wonderful fightback.

Raza with three for 25 was the most successful bowler, while Evans had two for 25.

Muzarabani was the most economical with one for 18 off his four overs.

Rugby legend Tendai Mtawarira launches The Beast Wine Collection

Legendary former Springbok prop Tendai ‘The Beast’ Mtawarira has poured his passion into a new business project that has now officially culminated in the launch of a bespoke wine collection..

The Beast became a household name across the globe during the course of an illustrious rugby career that saw him feature in over 100 games for the Durban-based Sharks, while he is the third-most capped Springbok player of all time after playing in 117 Tests.

Mtawarira hung up his boots after playing a defining role in the Boks’ successful 2019 Rugby World Cup triumph, but as a man of many talents, his philanthropic work and business endeavours have elevated his ‘game’ to another level ever since retiring.

As a self-confessed “secret wine lover”, The Beast has now gone public with the launch of his very own wine collection, founded on a brand philosophy of excellence, resilience, and passion.

The launch of The Beast Wine Collection signifies a notable addition to the ever-expanding business portfolio of the well-known former Springbok prop, whose post-rugby career is managed by Roc Nation Sports International, the world-renowned agency that facilitated this project.

“This is a very special day,” Mtawarira commented. “I have been eagerly awaiting the moment when we could share details of this exciting launch of The Beast Wine Collection, which is very close to my heart.

Our mission is to offer a high quality, locally produced wine to an extensive consumer market, and the production of this collection has represented a true labour of love over the last year. I am confident that everyone will enjoy the product as much as I have enjoyed the journey of producing this collection of fine wines.”

A unique partnership with SMCG Wines – a boutique wine export trader – has led to key collaborations with four unique vineyards from four different wine regions of the Western Cape: Benguela Cove, Arra Vineyards, Holden Manz and Cape Point Vineyards.

After countless hours spent visiting these vineyards and consulting with the owners and producers of some of the best wines in South Africa, The Beast Wine Collection includes a MCC Brut, Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosé and a Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon, which each have a special meaning to Mtawarira.

The co-founder of SMCG Group, Patrick McGee, said it was certainly an exciting moment to officially announce the launch of The Beast Wine Collection.

“Our mission was to produce excellent wine that is native to South Africa and grown in an ecologically conscious and sustainable manner, and it’s wonderful to have seen this vision come to fruition.

A year-long process has culminated in this choice of these four wines from these four estates that are an ode to Beast’s journey on the rugby pitch, ending with the achievement of a lifelong dream after winning the World Cup in Japan in 2019.

The Beast Wine Collection will be a fast-growing brand that aims to celebrate the authentic flavours of the world-class vineyards and climate within South Africa.”

“As part of the commitment to providing a premium quality product, another unique aspect of the collection that we are very proud of is the inclusion of a security feature powered by OriginAll on each bottle, which empowers users to make safer product choices by verifying its unique security label. Thank you to Beast, Roc Nation Sports International and all the role players who made this possible.”

Michael Yormark, president of Roc Nation Sports International, said it was certainly a proud moment for RNSI to have facilitated this special wine production.

“Beast is one of the most inspirational and hard-working people who strives for excellence in everything he does, and so it is no surprise that he has continued to achieve such great success after retiring from rugby. His wine collection includes a host of high-quality products that I have no doubt will prove to just be as popular as Beast has always been, both in South Africa and overseas.”

“Beast always commits 100% to everything he does, and this is reflected by a premium wine collection that has come to fruition after partnering with only the best vineyards in South Africa. Congratulations to Beast and all those involved in making this incredibly special product launch possible.”
