Ballance in Zimbabwe squad for T20I series against Ireland

Gary Ballance is set to make his bow for Zimbabwe after he was named in the squad for this month’s three-match Twenty20 international (T20I) series against Ireland.

The left-handed batter – who played 23 Tests and 16 one-day internationals for England between 2014 and 2017 – recently signed a two-year contract to play domestic and international cricket in and for the country of his birth following his release from county cricket side Yorkshire.

He is one of the four changes made to the 15-man side that represented Zimbabwe at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia in September-October.

Star all-rounder Sikandar Raza – who is in the running for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year, ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year awards – will not feature in the series against Ireland after Zimbabwe Cricket granted him the permission to play franchise cricket elsewhere.

Pace bowler Blessing Muzarabani, who is recovering from a quadriceps injury, has also missed out on selection alongside wicketkeeper-batter Regis Chakabva and batter Milton Shumba.

Apart from Ballance, the other new faces in the squad are Tadiwanashe Marumani, Innocent Kaia and Victor Nyauchi.

With captain Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava all available, Zimbabwe will be at near-full strength when they face Ireland at Harare Sports Club.

The T20I matches will be played on 12, 14 and 15 January, all scheduled to start at 1:00 pm local time.

This will be followed by the three-match ODI series between the two sides set for 18, 21 and 23 January, also at Harare Sports Club.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Cricket and Cricket Ireland have agreed to move the second one-day international (ODI) match between their senior men’s teams in Harare this month to a Saturday.

That game was originally scheduled for Friday, 20 January, but it will now be played on Saturday, 21 January.

The rest of the schedule remains unchanged, with the first ODI set for Wednesday, 18 January, and the third and final taking place on Monday, 23 January.

All the matches will be played at Harare Sports Club.

Defiant Holy Ten announces New Album, Drops this Friday

Leading Hip Hop star Holy Ten today announced the release of a surprise album in apparent defiance to the ‘storm’ he recently torched.

Holy Ten yesterday tweeted that he now regretted the collaboration he did with Winky D after it was interpreted as an anti-establishment song.

He tweeted: “Activists, journalists, lawyers – Split opinions will not do any good for a brand that’s trying to serve & save everyone so help me by not acting like I’ve picked a side. Do not politicize a project that I’ve considered a mere honour to be a part of. I regret it now honestly.” (sic)

But the rapper made a surprising announcement today that he was launching a new album titled The Book of Malachi this Friday.

The ten-track album contains features from Majorsteez, Michael Magz, Xiba and Ghanaian Reggae and Dancehall artist Epixode.

Tonight he is expected to feature on Star FM’s On the Spot with DJ Ollah 7 where he is expected to clarify on the collaboration with Winky D and what actually transpired.

Speculation was rife on social media after ZANU PF Director for Information and Publicity Tafadzwa Mugwadi insinuated that Winky D had tricked Holy Ten and other artists to record songs that criticized the government.

He tweeted: “Artists are no fools. You can never abuse them to resurrect collapsed irrelevant opposition agendas @holytenmusic has clarified that. They were made to drop their lyrics before WinkD brought his own twisted version having signed a contract with @USEmbZim which I am in possession.”

Holy Ten regrets collaborating with Winky D – Our Thoughts

Musicians often express themselves in their music and speak out on political issues that affect their lives and that of their fans.

While this can be powerful and important, it also can come with consequences. Many musicians choose not to speak out on political issues for fear of alienating fans or appearing too biased.

Some even regret speaking out on political issues, feeling that politics have no place in their music and aren’t a good fit as is the case now with rapper Holy Ten.

Holy Ten posted on his Twitter account today that he regrets his collaboration ‘ibotso’ with Winky D because it has been interpreted to mean he has picked a political side.

Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono in his interpretation of the song said the collaboration was talking about looters.

“The song talks about looters who steal public funds using political power, and use the police for brutality with the help of spies, tweeted Chin’ono.

Holy Ten’s tweet has been received with varying opinions, his friend @hatiperi_wacho believes the song is not about politics.

“I think that song speaks of a different issue. Speaks of flashy old guards coming for young girls. The ghetto life repeats itself for the boys banking on their girls, but they always lose. That’s all. NO POLITICS! We, your fans understand don’t mind the rest. Keep leading the youth,” he commented on Twitter. (sic)

Popular blogger Thomas Chizhanje however believes Holy Ten has disrespected Winky D.

“If you are truly your father’s son please copy your dad… Do not disrespect him on social media by saying you regret an opportunity that he gave you,” wrote Chizhanje on his Facebook page.

Whatever the case, It always is a difficult terrain for an artist, especially in a polarised environment like Zimbabwe.

Others may feel they have made a mistake by becoming too outspoken or leaving themselves vulnerable to criticism and misinterpretation.

They may feel that by doing so they have gone outside the scope of their art and further damaged existing divides.

Ultimately, being a musician means being true to your art, and deciding what is and isn’t acceptable to include in your music.

‘Nomakunje’ – An Uplifting song by Everton Mlalazi & Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Everton Mlalazi and Ladysmith Black Mambazo have joined forces to provide a message of hope with their uplifting new song “Nomakunje”.

The past year was nothing short of eventful for the gifted praise and worshiper who also took home numerous awards.

Pele: Brazil football legend dies aged 82

Brazilian football legend Pele, arguably the greatest player ever, has died at the age of 82.

He is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

The only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was named Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000.

President Jair Bolsonaro has declared three days of national mourning.

Pele had been suffering with kidney and prostate problems in recent years. He had surgery to remove a tumour from his colon in September 2021 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, after the tumour was detected in routine tests.

He was readmitted to hospital in late November 2022.

His daughter Kely Nascimento has kept fans updated on her father’s condition with regular social media updates from hospital.

On Thursday she posted a picture of what appeared to be Pele’s family’s hands on his body in hospital and wrote: “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”

Terror Bouncers charged with Attempted Murder

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of two terror bouncers following a widespread manhunt.

This follows the chaos which occurred last weekend at Pabloz Night Club at Sam Levy’s where a bouncer, Blessing Kumunda attempted to stab another bouncer with a knife.

Music promoters had previously appealed for intervention from the authorities but nothing had materialised.

In a statement, the Police said: “The ZRP confirms the arrest of the two bouncers, Gideon Sanyangore (32) and Blessing Kumunda (36), whose video clip went viral on social media while attacking patrons with one of the suspects openly brandishing a knife at Pabloz Night Club, Sam Levy Village, Borrowdale.

“Police have since recovered the knife used in the commission of the crime. The suspects, who are facing attempted murder charges, will appear in court soon,” the statement added.

West Indies to tour Zimbabwe for Two Tests in February 2023

Zimbabwe will host the West Indies for two Test matches in February next year.

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has confirmed the series will be played at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

The first Test is scheduled for 4-8 February, with the second match pencilled in for 12-16 February.

Before the series gets underway, the West Indies will face a local side in a four-day warm-up match set for 28-31 January at Bulawayo Athletic Club.

Zimbabwe’s last Test match was way back in July 2021 against Bangladesh in Harare and, according ZC Director of Cricket Hamilton Masakadza, they will be eager to make the most of the upcoming series.

“We are pleased to confirm the West Indies will be visiting us for two Test matches that will be played in Bulawayo,” Masakadza said.

“Although it’s been a while since we last played Test cricket, our boys will be hungry and ready for some red-ball action and I believe an exciting series against one of the game’s top sides is on the cards.”

The last Test match between Zimbabwe and the West Indies – played at Queens Sports Club in October 2017 – ended in a draw, although the Caribbean side clinched the two-match series having won the first game by 117 runs.
