‘Winky D did Not Submit for the Awards’ — Star FM

Organisers of the Star FM Music Awards have responded to the wide growing concerns expressed by music fans following the release of the nominations.

Fans, critics and musicians alike were quick to notice something unusual on the 2020 nomination list, chief among them the absence of a Sungura category as well as Winky D and Gemma’s hit single Mugarden was missing from the Song of the Year nomination.

General manager of the Zimpapers Radio Broadcasting Division, under which Star FM falls, Mr. Comfort Mbofana said that despite calls for entries and an extension of the entries deadline, some artists were not forthcoming.

“We approached all artists including Winky D (through his management) who we deemed eligible for this year’s award process and asked them to submit their entries,” he said.

“We even facilitated resources at the station to assist in the submission processes.

“We had a good number of artists enter the awards and we had some who —for reasons best known to themselves — would not enter, “he said.

However, Zimbuzz investigations revealed that the Submission Website was not working most of the time and this resulted in some artists getting frustrated with the technology thereby deciding not to submit.

We, however, can not confirm this to be the main or sole reason why some artists did not submit.

Turning to the Sungura Category, Mr. Mbofana said there were no entries.

“It was also unfortunate that there were no entries for the Best Sungura Song category and we could not manufacture entries if there were none,” he added.

Another bone of contention was that artists should not be made to submit for Awards when they already submit their songs for airplay.

Artists and fans were arguing that the Station should use music and statistics from their library to determine nominations.

“There have been concerns raised about the submission requirement with some asking why artists have to enter themselves into an awards process,” quizzed Mr. Mbofana

“We looked at other music awards in the region and internationally and there is a universal requirement for the artists to enter the awards process by submitting their music for adjudication.”

Zimbuzz can also confirm that this is a standard requirement in most music Awards. In the region, we looked at how the Metro FM awards are done since these are directly related to Star FM as both are Radio Station Awards.

For one to enter into the Metro FM awards an artist is required to submit their entry. However, Metro FM has not held an Award ceremony for the past two years.

The Star FM Music Awards event will be held on the 22nd of February 2020 at Manna Resort in Glen Lorne and attendance is by invite.

The real Enzo is Back and Glowing!!

Enzo Ishall dropped ‘Uri kutsvireiko’ and I LoVE it. You wouldn’t think so because I have been a bit harsh on the guy lately.

I listened to the so-called freestyle first and I must say this is the Enzo I fell in love with the way he uses street jargon to get his point across.

His point this time being if you don’t get anything sweet from what you are drinking then why drink at all.

Its a question I have often asked those Kale lovers who move around with transparent bottles of goo touting how deliciously soothing it is.

Anyhow, Enzo. The Video is a work of art it allows us to focus on that increasingly yummy Dancehall artist.

I mean come on ladies Enzo is glowing up. The yellow brings out his perfect dark skin and the tinted dreadlocks like Justin Bieber said…Yummy.

It also shows us how in tune he is with his none verbal cues, he gesticulates in a manner that backs up his lyrics so you don’t get lost.

This might be by far the most organised freestyle I’ve seen in a while it even has a hook Well done Enzo I still don’t forgive you for Highest score though…,

All set for Selmor Mtukudzi Album launch this Friday !

Popular Afro-jazz musician and heiress to Tuku music legacy, Selmor Mtukudzi will launch her sixth album ‘Dehwe ReNzou’ at RM Garden Hall at the Harare Show Grounds this Friday 31 January 2020.

‘Dehwe ReNzou’ follows up on the release of a single ‘Mandidzimbira’ dedicated to Oliver Mtukudzi last week. The well-received single has set the tone and warmed the stage for the launch of ‘Dehwe ReNzou’.

The much-anticipated album launch has been spiced up with the inclusion of the evergreen Alick Macheso, on the performance line up. Macheso, undoubtedly the King of Zimbabwean music after the death of Oliver Mtukudzi, brings in a Sungura flare to Selmor Mtukudzi’s Katekwe.

Over the last two months Macheso has also roped in Selmor Mtukudzi as a supporting act during his tours. That fatherly gesture significantly helped to take Selmor’s music to the people.

A fusion of Afro-Jazz and traditional local beats, ‘Dehwe Renzou’ is an 11 track album. It was produced by Steve Dyer at Dyertribe studios in South Africa except a single house track which was done by McDee.

Steve Dyer is renowned for producing Oliver Mtudzi’s platinum album ‘Tuku Music’. He also produced ‘Bvuma’ and ‘Paivepo’, albums which totally changed Mtukudzi’s music fortunes. On the other hand, McDee is credited for producing Selmor’s popular house tracks like ‘Hangasa’ and ‘Nguva Yangu.’

Veteran Black Spirits members Picky Kasamba, Never Mpofu and Sam Mataure also featured on the album. Picky Kasamba did backing vocals and percussion whilst Never Mpofu and Sam Mataure played bass and drums respectively.

Legendary South African musician Vusi Mahlasela popularly known as ‘The Voice’ also features on one of the tracks.

Though it is not easy to pick the best tracks from the well-packaged album, Zvine Basa Rei, Uchafinhwa, Tanda Mbizi and Unconditional Love are leading the others in terms of popular appeal.

The album launch starts at 7.30 pm till late. Admission is US$ 5 equivalent for ordinary tickets and US $10 for VIP tickets.

5 Things We Learned From the ZIMA Awards 2020

Four years is a long time to be away, but Saturday 25 January came up fast for music lovers who had waited for the return of the Zimbabwe Music Awards.

Newlands was the venue and the expectation was high and so was the appetite for a good time.

Here are the Five things that we learned.

1. We still struggle to sing our own National Anthem.

Treasonous! That’s how I can describe the way Fusion 5 bastardized the National Anthem. You see, the national anthem is our national prayer, it is a solemn patriotic song, it is an expression of national identity.

It represents the tradition, history, and beliefs of a nation and its people. Now for someone to mumble through the lyrics of such an important song is utter disrespect. Disrespect both to the language and to the Nation.

2. There are corporates who still believe in Showbiz

Now for a cement company to be a headline sponsor of a music show was a stamp of confidence on the organisers’ part. This shows that someone and something is right up there with the new organisers led by CEO Reason Sibanda.

Kudos to PPC for believing in music. We don’t know how much you poured in, but we had an event and it went almost well.

3. We still use the sunset and shadows of trees to determine time

I saw some organisers wearing nice watches but those were just to decorate their wrists. Because if the watches did work, how is it that an event can start 2 hours late? Do you know what can happen in 2hrs?

That’s a whole soccer match including half time break. We really felt patronised by ZIMA considering that nobody cared to explain the cause of the delay or apologise for it.

4. The Awards have lost credibility

On the same day as the ZIMAs, Jah Prayzah had an appreciation concert in Budirio where he was thanking his real paymasters – the fans – for raising him and supporting his music. So were some of the nominees whose absence goes to show the level of disdain and mistrust towards the Awards.

Who can blame them when you have adjudicators making the whole country believe that Takura did more for Hip Hop than Ti Gonzi.

Who can blame them for snubbing a ceremony that saw it fit to award Ishan the Best Male gong. Who would bother to attend the next edition when history will record that Gemma was 2019 Best Female artist. That was scandalous!

5. NAMA and Star FM in serious danger.

Almost the same constituency will be expected to attend the NAMAs and Star FM Awards in just a month’s time. The precedence that ZIMA has set will have a direct consequence on how Awards are to be viewed in this country and the same snub may befall the two aforementioned.

NAMA and Star FM organisers now need to do some serious PR work to make sure theirs won’t become a sham.

Ti Gonzi quotes ED as he blasts ZIMA Awards

Rapper Ti Gonzi has broken silence about his treatment by the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA) where many feel he was robbed.

Ti Gonzi was nominated in Best Male, Best Hip Hop and was also nominated for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration categories for the song Kure which he did with Ishan.

He walked away with no award.

Despite dominating with the year and winning Best Male at the Zim Hip Hop award, Gonzi lost the ZIMA Best hip hop to Takura.

And they was a sudden gush of fury and vitriol from his fans and music lovers alike as they blasted ZIMA for what they termed the greatest robbery.

Ti Gonzi was also listening and reading what the people were saying and he gave a response.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God.No matter how much they try, they will never lie to the masses/people,” wrote Ti Gonzi, quoting a phrase which was popularised by President ED when he rose to power in 2017.

“Ndirikuzviona hangu kuti ruzhinji (majority) rwevanhu harisi kufara but the work I put for the music industry (ZimHipHop) in 2019 does not need a panel to validate me. Like I said on my previous post, just the 4 nominations were a win for me coz it showed me where I am now.”

He congratulated all the winners but said he was dissapointed by the ZIMA organisers.

“..And to ZIMA honestly I am disappointed. My perception of ZIMA Awards has changed, had I known, I wouldn’t even let my management submit for the awards or even talk about it to my followers,” he added.

High Court Orders VP Chiwenga to Return Children to Marry Mubaiwa-Chiwenga

The High Court has this afternoon ordered Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to return children to his estranged wife, Marry Mubaiwa-Chiwenga within 24 hours.

He was also ordered to allow her access to their home in Borrowdale Brooke, Orchid property in Domboshawa and their cars.

VP Chiwenga was also instructed to allow her access to her clothing items.

The former model and Miss World Zimbabwe licence holder had not had access to their three children since her arrest in December last year.

Marry Mubaiwe-Chiwenga is currently out on a $50 000 bail pending her trial in which she is accused of attempting to murder VP Chiwenga, illegally externalising US$1 033 000, laundering US$990 000 and fraudulently seeking to upgrade her customary union to a civil marriage without her husband’s consent.
