The spirit of camaraderie, wellness, and purpose will be on full display as CIMAS Health Group gears up for its annual Cimas iGo half-marathon, set to take place in Harare on November 17 and Bulawayo on November 24.
This year’s event is about inspiring men to take charge of their health as the marathon aligns with the global Movember initiative, focusing on men’s health issues, including prostate and testicular cancer awareness.
Under the theme “Men’s Health Champions Build Healthier Communities,” the marathon aims to spotlight the importance of men prioritising their well-being.
This focus aligns with Movember, a global awareness month dedicated to men’s health.
Mr. Vuli Ndlovu, Chief Executive Officer of Cimas Health Group, passionately described the initiative’s impact: “In recognition of Men’s Health Awareness Month, also known as Movember, a global movement focused on raising awareness around men’s health issues, Cimas Health Group is proud to host the Cimas iGo half marathon to bring attention to prostate cancer and other men’s health concerns.”
The marathon is open to all members of the public, whether they are competitive runners, health enthusiasts, or supporters of this vital cause.
Starting with the 21km race at 5:30 AM, followed by a 10km race at 6:00 AM, and a 5km race at 6:30 AM, the event will accommodate athletes of various fitness levels.
Registrations can be made online through Cimas, with a US$15 fee that covers a race pack, including a T-shirt, string bag, and a medal to commemorate the runners’ dedication to wellness.
Reflecting on last year’s success, Mr. Ndlovu shared, “Last year’s Cimas iGo half marathon was oversubscribed, and US$13,753 was raised. The money was donated to the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, reaffirming our commitment to the fight against cancer, which remains one of the leading health challenges not only in Zimbabwe.”
The funds raised from this year’s event will again support the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, with every step taken contributing to vital awareness and aid for those impacted by cancer.
Mr. Ndlovu touched on a key issue: traditional stigma around men discussing their health and seeking medical help.
“Traditionally, men have been reluctant to seek medical help or discuss health issues openly, fearing it might be seen as a sign of weakness. However, breaking this stigma in Movember is crucial, as open communication is essential for wellbeing,” he said.
The marathon embodies a positive shift toward building an open dialogue on health, empowering men to take proactive steps for their well-being.
While the race champions men’s health, Cimas Health Group emphasises that this is a movement everyone can support.
“As we join the global Movember movement to raise awareness for men’s health, let’s not forget the important role women can play in supporting their partners’ wellbeing, encouraging them to prioritize their health, and fostering a culture of openness,” said Mr. Ndlovu.
He also noted the critical health issues men face, including prostate and testicular cancer, mental health challenges, and lifestyle-related conditions like hypertension and diabetes.
Through the Cimas iGo wellness programme, which includes regular health screenings and fitness events, Cimas Health Group is working to create an environment that prioritizes health in the community.
This marathon, as Mr. Ndlovu explained, “is designed to encourage both physical fitness and motivate men to take control of their health.”
