About #ThisFlag and our Celebrities

Do famous people ought to stand up on political and/or moral issues?

Does their place in the spotlight imply that their supposition ought to be heard and esteemed?

Does each celebrity have an obligation to take a stand in opposition to social shameful acts?

Zimbabwe Flag

These were some of the questions that were doing rounds in our heads as our Facebook and Twitter feeds were dominated by ordinary people expressing their views on the arrest of Pastor Evan Mawarire.

As most Zimbabwean celebrities decided to be unceremoniously silent all through the Pastor Evan trial they took a severe battering on social media from their angry fans.

But there are those brave few who made their positions very clear, they tweeted, facebooked and even went to the court.

Well , let’s stop for a moment and think , What is a celebrity ? A well-known person? A well-accomplished person? A celebrated person??

One thing we know for sure is that they are a person who has a following , what they wear , how they speak influences their followers.

Stunner generated that whole sunglasses inside trend, Winky D solidified Rasta locks, Fungisai a picture pose.

If they jump on a trend everyone gets on it. ( remember Zviuta ?)

But very few have spoken for or against #ThisFlag …what could this mean ? Are they unbothered and unmoved? Is it none of their business ?

Do they not have Thoughts on the matter at all?

The bigwigs pretended that life is normal, that everything was still Selfies and Turn up. They were neutral, and its sad, world over Celebs stand for wat they believe is Right even if it’s Wrong.

America’s big black celebrity names have endeavoured to utilise their impact and popularity to reveal insight into one of that nation’s most sensitive issue of race.

The year 2014 to 2016 has been damaged by the various instances of police ruthlessness and state-endorsed brutality against Black individuals—the most unmistakable being the  passings of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice.

Many songs were released by prominent black artists, and many celebrities expressed their opinions about police brutality on black people

They stood up for something and said something.

Remember Heal the world? Remember Chris Brown and the Africa vs Ebola situation. Heck, right now Trevor Noah is on that Shootings tip. And here , in a country knee deep in Civil outcry all u hear is crickets from the celebrity island.

Is your reach limited to just which club we should hop to, how can u push your music/movie/video at such a time as this?

How can you not add your voice to what you believe in, and strengthen it ? Get us right all we are saying is You are either For Something or Against it … #ThisFlag or #NoFlag at all ………Just tell us which Dammit
