The Money Fight: Time to Put up or Shut up!

Having taken trash-talking to record levels of excess, top fighters Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Conor McGregor now must back up their wild boasts where it counts – in the ring.

Mayweather and McGregor

This weekend, the pair will do so amid a wave of hysteria and Las Vegas shtick, with DStv’s SuperSport broadcasting the action in the early hours of Sunday morning (from 3 am CAT) on SuperSport 2 and SS Maximo 1.

Mayweather will be aiming for a record 50th successive win as a professional. McGregor, for all the hype, will be engaging in just his first pro contest.

Yet this fight has more to do with marketing smoke and mirrors than boxing. Both will cash in like never before with their superstar status guaranteeing millions of eyeballs on televisions around the world.

Unlike many other broadcasters around the world, such as the US, where viewers must pay $99 to watch the fight, SuperSport’s Premium customers will receive it at no additional cost.

Mayweather is a slick operator who fights by the maxim of hitting and not getting hit. He has fast hands and the best defence in the game, qualities he’ll need against McGregor. The Irishman is bigger and stronger and will be unorthodox given his unfamiliarity with boxing.

He’s vowed to destroy Mayweather inside four rounds, although that is the sort of boast Mayweather has heard many times before. Forty-nine opponents have tried to beat him and 49 have failed.

With Hollywood stars scrambling for ringside tickets and regular fans trying to get their hands on tickets, which range in price from $500 to $10 000, it’s as big a fight as glitzy Las Vegas has ever seen.

The undercard offers more traditional fare with top fighters like Badou Jack and Gervonta Davis appearing.
Big fight fans can watch via their decoders or on DStv Now, online or the app.

Highlights of the fight will also be available on DStv’s Catch Up service in the hours after the event. Catch Up Plus, available on connected Exploras, will carry the full fight later in the day.

Such is his newly found love affair with Zimbabwe, which he kept on referring to as his second home upon arrival on Sunday late afternoon, that he has decided to have a dance with two cities.

On Friday, August 4 he will perform at Large City in Bulawayo before closing down his tour at the  Glamis Arena in Harare on Saturday, August 5.

The show dubbed the SAMA Festival is being organised by the United Kingdom based Y2K promotions in conjunction with Fly Africa.

“So when I told him about coming back to Zimbabwe he jumped at that occasion.”

Meanwhile, One of the directors of Long Cash Entertainment (Pvt) Ltd Mr Patrick Hundu has made peace with Busy Signal manager and CEO of Turf Music Entertainment Galey Gordon following a 2015 case that the former filed with the police claiming that Busy Signal had defrauded him of nearly $30 000.

Mr Patrick Hundu claimed Busy Signal failed to fulfil a contractual agreement to perform in Zimbabwe in August this year and made a report upon Busy Signal’s arrival for an October 2015 show.

Busy Signal was cleared of the charges by Justice Matanda-Moyo in her chambers.

However, the two parties have ironed out the differences and apologised to each other following the brawl and are working together in the two shows.

Tomorrow we run-depth review of the 5 things we learnt at the Miss World Zimbabwe.

Miss World Zim Models’ Encounter With a Rare Culture

With their straightened hair, weaves and extensions and hundred dollar perfume scents percolating the air of the Toyota Quantum Buses we boarded, The Miss World Zimbabwe finalists left for a trip to Kanyemba in Mash Central Sunday morning.

Models distributing sanitary wear

The plan was to escape the buzz of big city life and take a different breath of fresh air and enjoy the silence in the jungle where the only noise one gets is that of wild birds whistling in unison.

Little did they know that Kanyemba offers more than just unpolluted air but has rich rural traditions and folksy beliefs, accompanied by a rare tribe called the Doma people.

Models interact with one of the Doma people

The complex traditions and beliefs of the Doma people gave the models an insight into a world that many will never know or experience.

After spending a night at Chief Chapota’s homestead it was time to let their guide whom we knew as Bro Eddie to take their hands and lead them into their own world.

The models’ mission was to donate food stuff and sanitary wear to the Doma people but they realised the challenge at hand was more than just lack of food and hygienic sanitary wear.

The Doma people are very shy and socially reserved people, they don’t associate with the rest of the other cultures, they chose to stay far away in mountains and very secluded places.

Some of the Doma people who are born with two toes

Bro Eddie explained that because of their rare genetic makeup, they shy away from other people.

Some of the Doma are born with two toes and two or three fingers.

The other shocking experience the models’ witnessed was the practice of early marriages by the Doma people. The models saw kids as young as 10 years old already married and pregnant.

At another homestead, a 13-year-old girl already had three children and the Miss Zimbabwe Trust has already identified this as a matter that needs to be addressed by the eventual winner.

“That was a ground breaking initiative by the Trust.I don’t recall any pageant which has gone that far to assist the marginalized, ” said the Miss Zimbabwe Tryst spokesperson Tendai Chirau.

a rare genetic occurrence where some of the Doma people are born with

“The queen to be crowned on Saturday will continue spearheading projects to assist the Doma people in the area of sanitary wear.

“Apart from the donations we handed over, the trip was also an eye opener which made us fine tune the beauty with a purpose project.”

He also said that the project provided with it an urgent need to assist the marginalised groups in Zimbabwe.

“The girls arrived at this conclusion due to the needs assessment which we conducted. It is also important to note that the trip provided a platform for the aspiring queens to interact with marginalised groups of our country, hence this makes our finalists all rounded Zimbabweans and not just urbanites, ” he said.

The girls also had the opportunity to view the mighty Zambezi River as well as the Angwa river (they also learnt that the street in Harare’s CBD was named after it)

International Olympic Committee Awards 2018-2024 Broadcast Rights To SuperSport

SuperSport has acquired pay-TV media rights in Sub-Saharan Africa for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games and the next two winter Olympics, giving DStv viewers in Zimbabwe full access to these giant sporting events.

The summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020, the Winter Games in Beijing in 2022 and the summer Olympics in 2024, the host city for which is not yet selected.

“The agreement follows the completion of a competitive tender in the region, as a result of which SuperSport will also work with the IOC to support the development of an Olympic channel, including the production of localised content,” she said.

The IOC President, Thomas Bach, said: “We are delighted to be working with DStv’s SuperSport to be able to bring Olympic fans in Africa, even more, coverage than before.

“I have visited many countries across Africa and have witnessed first-hand the important role that sport and the Olympic Games play on the continent.

“The IOC redistributes 90 per cent of the revenue derived from its commercial agreements to support the development of sport around the world, including in Africa.”

Ms Dziva said SuperSport had been long-standing partners of the International Olympic Committee and was delighted to have secured Olympic rights for the coming four Games.

“The Games are extremely popular in Zimbabwe, as elsewhere in Africa, and SuperSport coverage is known to be among the best in the world, with all the drama and excitement packed into a series of channels that yield consistently good ratings.

“SuperSport now looks forward to hoisting a multi-platform, multi-channel offering that will reflect the Olympics in their fullest,” she said.
