Idols SA back with a New season

South Africa’s long-running talent show Idols SA is returning on 17 July to Mzansi Magic for what’s set to be its most exciting season yet.

This year they welcome on board Standard Bank as a new headline sponsor in a season that will bring viewers showstopping performances.

The theme for this season is “Singing a Different Tune”, and it starts with the new panel of judges which features two prominent and respected newcomers to the role, as well as a longtime fan favourite: triple-threat pop culture icon Thembi Seete and rapper-producer extraordinaire JR Bogopa join the multi-talented choreographer and TV star Somizi Mhlongo.

The three will be nurturing and ushering in new talent with judging styles as unique as their personalities, skill sets and illustrious careers.

Award-winning co-executive producer Tebogo ‘ProVerb’ Thekisho returns as host, a role he’s successfully held for what will now be his 13th season.

Idols SA is back!! As much as it is about the music, it is also about the people: we are proud to unearth new and emerging talent, and our viewers form emotional connections with the singers as we follow along their journey from audition stage to making a career from their passion.

“We are excited to see who season 18 brings us,” says Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.

“We are also excited to welcome our new headline sponsor Standard Bank, as a valued partner for this season.

“They have – over the years – proven to be passionate about making dreams come true, and our winners should look forward to a basket of great prizes, which will be announced in due course,” she concludes.

“I can’t wait to be able to really share on my social media platforms because while also wanting to expand my presence on social media and really develop my modelling career I would love to be able to bring light to the issues that are important to me such as dealing with families of those that have loved ones that are incarcerated.

Sables out of World Cup Contention — Our thoughts

It was only just a dream after all!

The Sables failed to qualify for the 2023 Rugby World Cup after being outclassed by Namibia 34 – 19.

Zimbabwe were never in the driving seat as they kept chasing the Namibians.

Although the Sables managed to score three tries, there was never any indication that they would cause enough problems to worry their fellow Southern Africans.

It should be time for serious decisions to be considered now on such issues as development, going pro and retaining foreign-based professional Sables so that the team will maintain a core in the following years.

It is unfortunate that what was witnessed yesterday is a story that has constantly repeated itself; a tale of being so near yet so far.

There are issues that need to be addressed, for instance, having a substantive hooker, a proper fly-half and a consistent scrum half (although Hilton had a decent game versus Namibia.)

It could also be time to question whether or not Brendan Dawson has what it takes to take the team forward.

The team has experimented on countless times and the fluidity has on many occasions been flawed even in winning efforts.

What this has done is make our most significant wins seem so basic and not as dominant as they should have been. A simple example is on kicking.

Zimbabwe keeps on losing on the big stage because of a certain system that is in place which can easily be noted as an elitist mentality which excludes the basis of pure talent but seeks obedience, charisma and unquestioning players.

It seems that the more obedient and unquestioning a player is, the more they play for the sables.

There are many talented Sables out there but unfortunately, some have been blackballed for challenging the system.

Some players simply play because they are darlings of the system but when it comes to being good enough, well, there is a sharp contrast.

Selection needs to be fair, payments need to be fair and the nation’s best interest has to be put first.

Also, expecting professional results whilst hiding behind the, “we are still amateur or semi-professional” tag has to be thrown away.

Why then have we not yet turned pro as a nation?

There is need for the ZRU, Sables Trust or whoever is stirring the ship right now to seriously consider going professional.

With the many coaches around, turning professional will certainly help to identify talent from the coach to players.

We might then have a situation where coaches won’t have to be recycled and maybe coaches might get proper employment rather than having a pack of good coaches lining up for menial Craven week and Academy week coaching jobs.

The mentality has to change.

Just because the machine is not well oiled, it was only a matter of time before it crashed and like it has been the tale in recent years, Zimbabwe failed to jump a hurdle despite the confidence and hype attached to the team.

The dream will one day become a reality if we one day choose to make serious changes that are good for rugby.

We continue to wait for the day when that will be achieved, in the meantime, it’s good luck to the Sables in the 3rd and 4th place playoff!

‘I WISH I WAS JOKING’ has broken some new ground for Q Dube and he says the reception he has received is heartwarming.

“I wish how other people could tell you, I have experienced standing ovations, it has been delicious,” he said.

The title of the show is hilarious on its own, and Q explains to us the reason behind it.

“I WISH I WAS JOKING’ is basically from everything I’m addressing in the comedy, from burying my grandmother to how black people relate to funerals, the Zimbabwe economy and politics among many other subjects,” he explained.

“It may seem like I’m joking but these are serious issues, though put into comedy.”

For those attending the Reps Theatre show in August, he has one promise.

“Come to the show and you will see why I should be in your top three best stand-up comedians in Zimbabwe.

Rick Ross Show: Organisers Speak on Opening Acts

Friday 1 July we woke up to probably showbiz’ biggest news in a while, American Rapper, Rick Ross will be visiting Zimbabwe for a show.

The announcement made by Roar Entertainment Africa was greeted will all kinds of joy and already we were imagining what the scenes at Harare International Conference Center on Friday, November 18, 2022 will be like.

But with the same gladness the news was received, soon as the announcement had simmered, questions were beginning to brew.

Who are going to be the opening acts? Should the acts be exclusively hip hop?

Others went as far as creating a petition to have Jah Prayzah and Winky D sit this one out, saying they were not suited for this show.

Zimbuzz managed to catch up with Ms Shally of Roar Entertainment Africa to find out if they had already decided on who was going to open for the rap icon Rick Ross.

“We haven’t really picked up yet on opening acts, it’s something we are still applying our head around,” Ms Shally told Zimbuzz.

“But one thing I can say to you is that we are going to pick artists that Zimbabwe hasn’t used to open for big acts.

“We have heard people’s concerns and we are promising to put on different artists on this show,” she added.

Ms Shally – Roar Entertainment Africa

She also said that they were going to use local MCs for the event.

Ms Shally also said that they were working on spicing the show up a bit to give it some flavour.

“We are going to spice it up a bit but I can guarantee you that the acts on the day will be 80 percent hip hop, the other 20 percent is just to spice it up a bit,” she revealed to Zimbuzz.

Bringing in one of the biggest artists in the world in the form of Rick Ross was a big statement. But why did they pick Rick Ross?

“The name roar is new but the people behind it have been in the industry for 10 yrs.

“We have a good relationship with him (Rick Ross) and we thought he would be a good fit for Zimbabwe, if you look at it Zimbabwe hasn’t had a big artist in a long time,” she said.
