Andy Brown’s son Alex to perform at the Zim Achievers this Saturday

Andy Brown’s son, Alex Brown has been selected as one of the rising music stars to perform at the sold out Zimbabwe Achievers Awards in the UK.

Alex Brown

This year’s edition is being held at the Cumberland hotel this Saturday where the multi-talented guitar player is set to announce his arrival as a superstar.

“For the past seven years guests to our previous events have had the opportunity to witness first-hand, upcoming gifted artists, and we want to keep that trend going,” said Events Coordinator Nothando Ndebele.

Other performers for the prestigious event include gospel singer Dalia Majongwe, performing artist Bea Muzenda, bass-baritonist, Simon Shibambu and soulful jazz sensation Nandi.

Nandi

Over the years the Awards ceremony has given the platform to up and coming artists who have since become household names.

These include Cynthia Mare, Tinashe Kachingwe, Tariro NeGitare, Chashe and Gemma Griffiths, among others.

“Most of the artists that have featured at the Zim Achievers awards since its inauguration have been relatively unknown but are doing or have gone on to do amazing things.”

“We have the likes of Simon who has performed for the First Lady of China on her visit to London and, for Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations at Westminster Abbey.

We also have Nandi whose dynamic and graceful voice has adorned the stage of venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, The Roundhouse and The Southbank Centre, and we are delighted that they will share their talent with our guests on Saturday.

We believe that the ZAA platform is not only about celebrating those who are successful and achieving great things but, there to recognise and propel rising talent in our community,” she added.

Alex Brown has been on the music scene for a few years and is currently working on his own music. Based in the United States, the star attributes his style of music to his father who he says taught him how to play Afro pop music.

“I used to play a lot of rock music, but before my father passed on, he afforded me the wonderful gift of fusing afro pop with all the urban elements I had already acquired and I will forever be grateful to him for that,” said Brown.

Brown, also a talented mbira player, will be joined on stage by his aunt and Zimbabwean artist TariMari.

TariMari is a former band member of the late Mbira Queen, Chiwoniso Maraire.

I Only Play Local Music – Dr Grace Mugabe

First lady Dr Grace Mugabe said she loves local music and is a keen supporter of all things to do with the promotion of local content.

First Lady Dr Grace officiating at the house handover yesterday

Speaking at the house handover ceremony of musician Comrade Chinx, Dr Grace said she only played local music.

“I only play local music in the gym when I am training”, she said.

She also said that she was a fitness fanatic (short of saying fitness bae) and also loves to dance and each she is doing that she will be listening to local music.

To prove that she was in touch with local music, she handpicked some musicians who were present at the handover.

First to be recognised in the middle of the gathered crowd was Willis Watafi whom she said she knew from the days of Africa Revenge.

She then asked bassist and singer Edith Weutonga to come and help her sing some song.

“Edith come help me sing,” she said to her, much to Edith’s astonishment as went to her podium.

Upon realising how she was shocked, Dr Grace said to her  “I know you all, you think I don’t listen to your songs,” she quizzed.

Dr Mugabe also said that she doesn’t tolerate any pirated music.

“If someone wants to give me a music disk I first ask if it was not pirated,” she said with a serious tone.

Also speaking at the same ceremony was the Zimbabwe Music Awards chairperson Mr Joseph Nyadzayo who was responsible for building the house in Malbereign.

Mr Nyadzayo broke down as he narrated a story about comrade Chinx.

“When I was out of the country with the President I received a message that comrade Chinx had died,” he said before breaking down.

“I then read a story that said Roger Confirm,” he said. (Referring to the story that confirmed Chinx was alive)

Nyadzayo commended the musical role that was played by Comrade Chinx in the war saying that he fired through his mouth more than his gun.

For a man who initially intended to study medicine, Comrade Chinx found the national call for liberation loud enough for him to abandon his quest of becoming a doctor and joined the war.

Comrade Chinx albeit a singer has healed many hearts through his music, perhaps more than he could have had he studied medicine.

Music is known for its therapeutic nature, and yesterday even though battling blood cancer comrade Chinx’s heart could clearly be seen smiling, as though completely healed from the love and gesture shown by Mr Nyadzayo and a host other companies and individuals who helped in the project.

Get well soon Comrade!

Tuku Asks Wife to Marry Him Again

In a moving speech at a dinner held in his honour at the Waltham Abbey Marriott Hotel in London on Saturday, superstar Oliver Mtukudzi asked his wife if she could marry him again.

Tuku chronicled how the past four decades of their marriage had been tested by what seemed insurmountable tries but wife Daisy stood by him.

“D, I want to marry you again, will you marry me?” he said.

“You are such a wonderful person.  I am not perfect but you are always moulding me to be a better person. We have had our ups and downs but, I thank you for being brave. I thank you for blocking all the bad things that come my way.

At times there are negative things said about me, and in most cases, I know that they are not targeting me but they are targeting you. However, you have chosen to be with me despite the negativity. God bless you,” he added.

The event, organised by exclusive events specialists BlackTie Management, was sold out, with guests coming from as far as the United States and Germany to celebrate him.

In celebrating his wife, Tuku in one of the two question and answer segments, led by popular event host Soxx (Tim2Soxx) and broadcaster and former radio DJ Ezra Tshisa Sibanda, spoke about the longevity of his marriage, stating that he thought in order to be one, couples need to work together.

“In my case, I am a lucky guy to be where I am. I am not a genius. What you see or have seen is a product of a wonderful wife.”

Mrs Mtukudzi, who travelled with her husband earlier in the month to attend the Y2K Southern African Music and Arts (SAMA) tour where he was the headline act, said that she was speechless.

“I do not have much to say but that I love you. I will be with you until death do us part,” she said.

“Only God knows what sort of person you are. No matter whether things are going right, wrong, or people want to stir things up for us, they will never win because God is a protector,” she added.

BlackTie Management Events Director, Zenzo Ncube said that the team were thrilled to have hosted the exclusive event for one of the greatest musicians to come out of Zimbabwe.

“We would like to thank everyone who came out to celebrate Samanyanga. We can honestly say that it was a fitting tribute for an exceptional man whose wealth of experience and wisdom are sublime,” said Ncube.

Poor Mafikizolo Failed To Sendekera

As if odds had not been defied yet, the HICC was almost reaching its capacity. The general populace was spending its hard earned cash to support Jah Prayzah and his fellow collaborators at a hard time to spend money on entertainment.

Even the VIP filled up with everyone expecting a dose of entertainment from the star quality that was headlining the show.

In what looked like a mere lack of seriousness from the Mafikizolo band, its set kept getting cut as the music stopped.

Jah Prayzah and Mafikizolo duo Picture by Takudzwa Chihambakwe (ZimboJam)

This started as they were performing the title track for the concert, Sendekera.  People started trickling out of the venue at this moment despite continued efforts by the South African duo to try and facelift their act.

Their lip syncing did not make it any better. Is this a Sean Kingston moment, when foreign acts don’t put any energy into giving the crowd value for their money.

Local Supporting Acts

Local acts made this a better night by following the band format. Ngonie Kambarami and Alexio Kawara proved why they are still surviving even after the death of a genre they were said to solely belong to. Songstress Cindy Munyavi’s act could have been more electric had she used a live band.

Jah Prayzah

As usual, the leader of the Military Touch Movement lived up to his hype. He brought the house down belting all the hits still making waves in the airwaves including his collaboration with Diamond Platinumz that he performed with a band member.

It was a bit worrying when the only MTM member to support him during the Chekeche performance was Nutty O, who gave a spirited performance to a lukewarm reception from the people.

It was basically a #ToraMariUnited day for Jah as he managed to pull off this feat at a time children were about to return to schools. Somebody say school fees?!

And the night belonged to Andy Muridzo

The ‘whistle-guy’ as he is affectionately called by his fans was the highlight of the night. Baba Keketso is one artist who is vocally talented. This guy pulled off a feat some dancehall artists cannot achieve.

The singer managed to pull off the whole Cold Heart Riddim medley imitating each artist’s voice. He did not stop there.

He brought it home with tunes by Kinnah, Seh Calaz, Ras Caleb, Hwindi President and Soul Jah Love! This was however iced with an unforgettable mbira display.

This young artist might not have broken the market yet but it is not an undisputed fact that he has made his presence known. And he is coming for the crown.

Nyasha David Debuts With Tiki Taka Video

Nyasha David has us enraptured by his new video Tiki Taka which dropped this week.

The track is enjoying a fair share of radio airplay and the team at JMC Studios decided to have the momentum rolling by presenting us with a video that has surprised many.

Filmed out at the LongChen Plaza in Harare the music video features some amazing choreography work by Realflex Dance Crew.

Shot and directed by Tafadzwa ‘Croft’ Furusa of GuardianPix who has been creating some amazing visuals for a short time now yet this music video sees Croft truly venture up to give a song more life.

The song itself isn’t laying on the shrubs of any past material we’ve gotten from Nyasha’s participation in the Dreamstar Zimbabwe 2015, it’s rather new with unbridled brilliance and liveliness.

The song floats between house and afro-pop but is catchy, danceable and lovable, it gives us the first taste of Nyasha David’s upcoming Debut Album.

The Incident  premieres at HIFA Opening Night

The Incident a new theatrical performance written by Swedish playwright Joakim Daun and directed by Elizabeth Zaza Muchemwa, premieres at HIFA opening night the Reps Theatre.

Starring American actor Thomas Vilorio and Zimbabwean NAMA nominated actress Charlene Mangweni The Incident tells the story of Monica, a Zimbabwean woman moves to Sweden to pursue her PHD studies.

While in Sweden, she falls in love with Jan, a Swedish headmaster.

Jan helps her feel part of Swedish society and convinces her to follow him when he takes up a new job in small town in South Sweden.

One day at her new job as a secondary teacher she gets into a quarrel with one of her students. The student then makes an allegation against Monica.

As the news of ‘The Incident’ reaches the rest of the school and the people in the small town, the ground under her starts unravel.

The Incident is a love story that makes us look closer at the dichotomy of when outsiders are one of us and when they are not. It allows audiences to reflect over what how far we are willing to go to understand those that are different from ourselves.

Catch it on Wednesday, May 3 at 11:30 am at Reps Theatre Upstairs

Blockbuster Lineup For Mafikizolo Sendekera Gig

2Kings Entertainment just made sure the cold that’s sweeping across the country will be equally dealt with as they have added a hot line up to the Sendekera gig.

As Mafikizo jets in today for the Friday show slated for HICC at the Rainbow Towers, an exciting blockbuster line-up has been prepared.

Cindy Munyavi

We dwell much on Cindy’s inclusion because we think it was long overdue that the Queen of Pop is included in such high profile shows.

Said Dee Nosh about the new inclusions: “We alway do the unexpected on artists and we have come up with what we know will bring a great performance”

Cindy is smarting with her chart-topping single Setta Pace which is in the top 5 charts of all urban radio stations.

Setta Pace is taken off her new double album that was released in February and contains 25 tracks.

We give you her top 5 songs that you should expect

1. Saturday

This happens to be track number one and it’s a great place to start. Here Cindy equates the love she is getting from her lover to a sunny Saturday.

“When you hold me in your arms it feels like a Saturday…” goes the lyrics.

The song is a slow ballad that you would like to play in your car when you are taking a picnic drive with your human next to you.

Saturday here represents a great day, where everything is just perfect in love world. Great song. We strongly recommend

2. Visa

For those in the dark VISA here means getting approval from your spouse so that you could go out to have a drink, party or have fun with your friends. (Make sure you got your VISA for Friday Gig)

Laced on a dancehall feel Cindy paints a picture of a person who is about to have fun like it’s the last day of their existence.

3. Clap for My baby

This one has that RnB trap feel, you get the feeling it’s was made specifically for the for the Snapchat generation.

Or made I should say this song provides more sexual healing than all of the songs you have heard in 2017. she gave a 5-star vocal gymnastics.  Must Listen to.

4. Hondo

It’s sort of directed at the rejection a wife faces from her in-laws.

Hondo is not one of those pretty pop songs music as she narrates how ugly an emotion jealous is.

Here she gets lets out the aggression she been suffering in her relationship in very strong Shona words

5. Setter Pace (Ghana Remix)

This happens to be the lead single off the album and as the name suggests it does set the pace. It features the husky and soulful voice of Sherifa Gunu from Ghana.

Alexio Kawara

Alexio has been holding shows in the city but it has been a long time since he had a big gig.

This show provides his adorable fans with a chance to reminisce on the yesteryear hits such as Chibvugubvugu, Musikana Akanaka, appetietNdinomhanya, Shaina just to name but a few.

Andy Muridzo

Finally, he makes his debut performance before a big paying crowd

The appetite to see Andy in a live performance is so huge such that this could be the one most people are looking forward to.

If he improves on that poor independence celebrations performance at the National Sports Stadium, perfomAndy will still many hearts on Friday.

Jah Prayzah and Mafikizolo

The two giants will for the first perform their duet Sendekera before a live audience. We are certain that the collaboration will be more energetic and lively as these two always put in a masterclass in performance.

Suprise Suprise….Sam Dondo and Ngoni Kambarami

Sam Dondo at his Album Launch – Picture by Gamuchirai Gatawa

Ok, this is a huge surprise but kudos to 2Kings entertainment for realising that there exists a market for each and every artist to showcase their craft.

Same launched his new album Game Changer at the Meikles this month and will get another chance to once again charm the Zimbabwean audience whose expectation is known to be very high

Ngoni Kambarami also has a new album which is doing well on the Power Fm daily Chart show and he has a couple of number one hits that the fans are sure to dance to.

Ster Kinekor Westgate Cinema Closes Down

Ster-Kinekor Cinema at Westgate will tonight go dark permanently bringing to an end a memorable movie journey the theatres have provided over the years.

This is as a result of the termination of the agreement between Ster-Kinekor and the shopping centre.

In a statement, the management said the cinema complex at the Westgate Shopping Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, will close, with the final day of trading at this site on Thursday, 27 April 2017.

CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres Wanda Matandela said the development was unfortunate.

“While it is unfortunate that the Ster-Kinekor complex at this site at Westgate centre will close at the end of April, cinema-goers in Harare can still catch all the latest blockbusters that are released on the big screen at our other two popular venues in the city.”

This leaves movie lovers with two options, Sam Levy’s Village or Eastgate Mall in the city, both of which boast seven, state-of-the-art digital cinemas.

About Ster-Kinekor Theatres

Ster-Kinekor Theatres is a wholly-owned business within the Primedia Group and is the largest movie exhibitor on the African continent.

To most South Africans, the word ‘movies’ is synonymous with the name ‘Ster-Kinekor’. The company operates 57 commercial cinema complexes in South Africa, with six international sites based in Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The cinema chain’s sites house more than 480 large-scale screens, over 87 264 seats and the largest 3D footprint featuring more than 140 state-of-the-art 3D screens across the country.

Miss V Candy Drops Mayhem…Her biggest Collabo Yet

After welcoming a beautiful baby last year TV presenter and rapper Miss V Candy has come out with an equally beautiful star-studded collaboration.

Titled Mayhem, the song which features Nyanda of Brick and Lace as well as South African rapper Gigi Lamayne dropped during the Easter holidays and is already on heavy rotation across African radio stations.

The original music was created by Zimbabwean Award-Winning Hip hop producer Xndr and additional production and vocals were done by Shayzar of Mixmasterz in South Africa.

Nyanda’s vocals were done in Miami.

It debuted on Nigeria’ Rhythm FM ‘s Dance Party hosted by Big Brother Africa Host IK and will this week drop on South African Stations.

The song is already on all Zimbabwean urban stations.

With an all-female ensemble, the track which is a blend of Hip Hop and dancehall is the first major single from establishing Entertainment Afrika Records whose vision is of making global music and working with international artists.

Entertainment Afrika Records CEO Marc Mandisoul explains how the collabo came about.

“The collaboration came about after Entertainment Afrika Records signed V Candy and the first single was designed to be a girl-power track so I hooked up Nyanda and Gigi through Mixmasterz to work on the project,” he said

“Nyanda loved the music and laced her hook and then later added a verse. There is a version that includes Kat Dahlia but her label would prefer it to be a remix because of her contractual obligations.”

He added: “Nyanda was the first choice because concept involved blending Hop hop with dancehall given that Zimbabwe is also largely warming up to that genre and she can also do pop hooks so that was the added advantage and it being a ladies anthem Gigi Lamayne was the best choice from South Africa.

“She has a sound different from V Candy and this gives variety to the hip hop verses making track both solid and radio friendly.”

Speaking of the new song Miss V Candy said she was pleased with the direction her career was taking.

“I’m loving where this music is taking me,” she said.

“I have always wanted to rap but wasn’t so sure. It’s great that I get to start at this level and work with the dopest team ever.”
