NAMA Disqualifies Foreign Directed Music Videos

The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) on Thursday announced the list of nominees for 16th National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) edition to be held on 18th February 2017 at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale, Harare.

Notable nominees in music include Trap King Takura, young Tamy, Winky D and Jah Prayzah.

In a press release, the organisers said a panel of independent adjudicators were appointed to preside over all the submissions and went through an intense 6 weeks of adjudication.

They said the adjudication was based on submitted entries together with monitors’ reports of both individuals and institutions that were appointed to keep an eye on excelling artists throughout the year.

Adjudicators applauded the geographic spread of entries across all genres and quality of artworks despite limited resources although in some sectors like Spoken Word.

However, the Arts Council body said that they were not going to recognise video entries directed by foreigners.

“Most submissions of music videos were directed by foreigners and generally, the award for outstanding video is given to the director and NAMA does not award foreign practitioners,” read the press release

Adjudicators said only Zimbabweans are eligible to receive a NAMA.

This disqualified a lot of videos including Jah Prayzah’s Two video Watora Mari and Mudhara Vachauya, This also means that a lot of Zimbabwean in the diaspora will not be eligible to enter since most of their video are done by foreign directors.

The panel also noted the decline in the number of females in the arts sector.

“…..lack of consistence in female artists in terms of productivity and presence, this is owing to various reasons top amongst them being reluctance of promoters to support female artists across board,” they noted.

Zimbuzz is pleased to share with its readers that it has been nominated in the Outstanding Online Media Category.

Tamy is Back With A Song That Every Black Girl Needs To Hear

Almost every song cued on our playlists today is commanding ladies to drop it, shake it, wine it and ricochet in practically no garments.

If women are not beeing called the B-Word they are either being told all the corners on their bodies that they themselves don’t know exist or all the things the brother would want to do to them on a Sunday morning when mama is at Church.

Titled Beautiful/Ndozvandiri Tamy’s new offing is set to immunise your year against your corrupted playlist, as it provides a healthy dose of confidence encouraging people to feel comfortable and pretty the way they are.

It commends our uniqueness as people and goes further to urge everybody to take a place of valuing themselves as Beautiful.

For a change a feel good song delivered with all the ingredients of a banger track, a sensible message packaged in an enjoyable manner.

The song dropped on Wednesday and its Tamy’s first collaborative single of 2017 featuring trap genius Takura and versatile dancehall singer Dobba Don.

Tammy opens the song in her signature infectious voice, capturing the essence of being yourself while making you feel good about yourself.

The song is set on the RnB beat with heavy influences of Electro dance music and the three take turns to immerse their strong vocals in a perfect way.

The Rebirth of Tamy?

There is a disturbingly huge void in the Royal Palace where RnB Queens are supposed to reside, Ever since Queen Tererai Mugwadi unceremoniously relinquished her crown it was only up to one royal member Cindy Munyavi taking her regal duties seriously.

Is the situation about to change? Can the little princess Tamy wrestle the throne and assume to the summit?

We are of the strong belief that this song is a rebirth of Tammy as she is now perfectly in her genre, the way she is so comfortable riding that beat shows that she is at home.

The first time I listened to Tammy in 2016 I was left wondering why an 18-year-old with such a voice was not doing pop music.

We enjoyed Tamy of “Ndibereke” but we love Tamy of “Ndozvandiri” You are 18 for Obama’s sake please be our Pop Queen.

Super Rugby Comes Back to Zimbabwe And This Time it’s Bigger

It’s back, oh yes super rugby comes back to Zimbabwe and this time it’s bigger.

Kyros Sports brought in the Vodacom Bulls and the Toyota Cheetahs last year to play at the giant National Sports Stadium.

This time around they have extended their invitation to the Lions who were the Super Rugby losing finalists and the Stormers who won the Currie Cup and the four teams will battle it out again at the National sports stadium on the 28th of January.

According to the organisers, the school teams will once again be the curtain-raisers and Zim fans will be hoping to see Churchill and Prince Edward again battle in the giant stadium.

“I am pleased to announce that we are going to have a Old Mutual Super Rugby weekend on the 28th of January, where 4 Super rugby teams will compete at one venue, and this is the first time in the world that you have such an arrangement, the teams will start coming in on the 26th and they again will conduct coaching clinics at different schools in the capital, ” said Nyasha Muchochomi, Kyros Sports director of athletics division.

A draw will be conducted on the eve of the matches to find out the teams pairing and Nyasha called out on Zimbabweans to come out in their numbers and fill up the stadium.

” we call upon all Zimbabweans to come out in their numbers and fill up the NSS, last year we had just over 20 000 paying crowd and this year since we have gone bigger we are expecting a bit more and the bigger the crowd the better.

He also added that talks are underway to have the Bulls adopt Zimbabwe as their second home.

‘the Bulls were really impressed with the crowd last year and remember they average 17000 at home so for them that crowd was massive, so talks are underway to have them play at least one game in Zimbabwe but it’s still a long way off,” added Nyasha.

Tickets are selling from $2 up to $25 and are already available online.

We are here for Business — Pasuwa

Zimbabwe Warriors head coach Kalisto Pasuwa, together with his skipper have warned the Red Foxes of Algeria not to underrate the Southern African region’s representatives at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament when the two sides square off in Group B opening match on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the Group B opener with Africa’s fourth best team, Pasuwa warned the North Africans, saying they should underrate his charges at their own peril as the Warriors were out to prove a point.

“We won our group and deserve to be here,” said Pasuwa.

The Warriors gaffer is of the idea that his squad is out to prove a point.

“We are taking it match by match. This may be a chance for some of our players to be seen at this stage. Hopefully, by the end of the tournament, we will have two or three players playing abroad, and they have to deliver and show character,” said the national team gaffer.

The history-making Zimbabwean coach warned Khama Billiart and Knowledge Musona not to be overwhelmed by fame, but instead to remain positive ahead of the tie.

“We have cover for Nakamba but we will miss him. Khama we have been talking to him, he is a man to watch and should be positive in whatever he does, same as with Musona is one of our regulars and he too needs to be very positive,” said Pasuwa.

Algeria Need To Be Wary Of Zimbabwe

Once in every two years ours focus turns to the biggest football showcase on the continent, that is the Africa Cup of Nations and the difference with this year’s edition is that after a decade Zimbabwe marks its return to the continental showcase and again as underdogs.

In as much as I don’t want to be patriotic about everything that involves Zimbabwean sport but instead, to watch, analyse disseminate information in the right way as I was taught when I undertook my journalism training.

Yes we are the underdogs in our group, don’t get me wrong, I am not being a cry-baby but the numbers reveal it all, and they don’t lie, we are in a group with most powerful teams in Africa.

Senegal is ranked the best team on the continent, two places ahead of Tunisia who are positioned third while Algeria concludes the top five of the best teams in Africa, and Zimbabwe is the lowly ranked of the four teams.

From the look of things we are the punching bags of our group and I hear people saying Zimbabwe will be one of the first teams to be on their way back… mind you someone said Khama would want that as he would have time to his shenanigans.

In as much as I believe that we are the punching bags, there is something that makes me believe that the Warriors will do the honourable thing and farewell at the forthcoming Africa Cup of nations.

I have said it since the Warriors booked a place in Gabon that they will grind a result, yes you are reading me right the Warriors are going to make history and qualify for a quarter-final.

Nevermind the chaos that characterised the training, here are five reasons why we believe the Warriors are going to make history Zimbabwe Warriors played an international friendly match with one of the continent’s football powerhouses Cameroon with odds favouring Cameroon Zimbabwe showed character forcing the Cameroonians to a one all draw.

Algeria is a side that is riding high after drubbing one of the continent’s lightweights, Mauritania by six goals to nil, a resulted many had expected to be an outcome between Zimbabwe and Cameroon but alas.

Hence the Algerians have to be wary of the Warriors.

Yes, Cameroon forced a draw had it not been a penalty awarded to the West African side after a crude tackle by Elisha Muroiwa, and the result came on the backdrop of another important result ahead of Gabon pitting Ivory Coast again the Warriors managed a stalemate.

The results have acted as morale booster within the Warriors camp, as it has given the team a kind of self-belief.

We are playing an Algerian side that we have played before.

Pasuwa before being appointed the national team coach for four years he played the North Africa teams with Dynamos and is quite aware of the tricks of the North Africans. My prediction is….. Warriors will not be empty handed on points GO WARRIORS GO.

48 Team World Cup, What it means for Africa and Infantino

Tuesday January 10 marked a historic moment in World Football as the Fifa Congress unanimously voted in favour of the current Fifa President Gianni Infantino proposal of increasing the number of participating teams at the World’s biggest football showcase.

The congress agreed to increase the number of participating teams from the current 32 to 48 teams a development which is set to benefit Africa and Asia.

The increase which will see a total of 80 matches being played during the tournament up from the current 64 matches that were being played since the inception of 32 team tournament in 1998.

These changes which will come into effect at the 2026 World Cup, the football governing board will see a 50 percent increase in revenue, a figure believed to be around 1 billion.

Yes, 1 billion increase in revenue.

What does the increase of teams entail for Africa a continent which has always played a deciding factor in football politics when it comes to Fifa Presidential elections.

Currently, the Caf has 5 guaranteed slots at the World Cup a number that will definitely increase as the new comes into play in 2026.

An increase in the number of Caf national teams means more exposure for African National players and again it comes with more international caps for players that will work in advantage of the players that dream of breaking into the big leagues of Europe where national team caps are a prerequisite for top clubs.

Apart from Africa and Asia coming out as the biggest beneficiary of the new system, never mind financial windfall that will come with the increase, Gianni Infantino seem to be the biggest winner ahead of the next elective elections of the World Football governing body as he has managed to out rightly win the hearts of many Africa’s football associations.

Nengomasha joins SuperSport’s AFCON Panellist of Benni McCarthy, Joseph Yobo, Sammy Kuffour

Former Warriors and Kaizer Chiefs midfield anchor Tinashe Nengomasha will form part of the experts panel on SuperSport during this year’s coverage of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which roars into life this Saturday.

Tinashe Nengomasha Pic: Soccer Laduma

Joining him will be old adversaries Benni McCarthy and Joseph Yobo, having had to man-mark Benni every time Everton faced Blackburn Rovers between 2006 and 2009, former Nigeria skipper Joseph Yobo was always in close proximity to the South African striker.

The duo will once again find themselves side by side, this time with a common goal as they team up to provide their expert opinion during SuperSport’s broadcast of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

On the same panel will be Sammy Kuffour and former Uganda international David Obua, a man whose father was part of the Ugandan national team the last time they appeared at an Afcon finals, 39 years ago.

The quintet will also be part of the guest line-up of Masterplan, an hour-long magazine show airing on Sundays at 4 pm CAT, tactically dissecting all matches played in the week.

SuperSport will be dispatching seasoned continental football journalist Thomas “TK” Kwenaite to Gabon along with Andrew Kabuura and Michael Katahena.

The trio will be the World of Champions’ eyes and ears, bringing viewers inside information from the Zimbabwe, Uganda and Ghana camps.

They’ll also be supplying content to Akwaaba, a 30-minute magazine show presented by Carol Tshabalala which will delve into the sights and sounds of Gabon.

Akwaaba, which translates to ‘welcome’ in many Western African dialects, will air on Saturdays from 4pm CAT.

Catch the kick-off match between the host nation, Gabon and Guinea-Bissau this Saturday, 14 January at 5pm CAT live on SS6/Select 1/Maximo 2.

Guinea-Bissau’s Football Team Just Got A Wild AFCON Send off

Guinea-Bissau’s football team received a hero’s send-off as thousands of its residents lined the streets of the capital to bid farewell to their team which is making its first appearance at the  African Nations Cup (AFCON).

Once again football proved to be a unifier as the tiny West African nation forgot about its never ending military coup d’etats and the poverty that ravages the country.

Images on the internet show jubilant fans in the streets as news emerged that the team had settled a strike over unpaid wages, clearing the way for their debut appearance at the African Nations Cup finals.

The team’s fairytale journey was being threatened by a boycott when players went on strike over unpaid bonuses for qualifying to the Gabon finals.

Reports from Portuguese news agency Lusa said the players have since all been paid sums between 10 000 and 23 000 euros in outstanding fees.

“In the early hours of Sunday, the players received everything they had to receive,” a government spokesman told the news agency.

Other media reports said the standoff was only resolved after a delegation of three players went to see the country’s president, Jose Mario Vaz.

They open their ticket in the Nations Cup in an opening game against the hosts Gabon in Libreville on Saturday, their other opponents are Burkina Faso and Cameroon.
