Don’t Miss a Beat: Tips for Enjoying a Live Concert

3,683

A concert is more than an evening excursion. This is your chance to go out in the town, mingle with friends, and discover the hottest new up-and-coming artists to add to your everyday playlist.

For some, this all seems like added pressure. Too much pressure, maybe. Is it possible to just sit back and enjoy a concert without fudging the details? We think so. Here are a few tips to guarantee the best of the best concert nights:

Know the Band

It’s every music-lovers dream: showing up to concercrowd_shotts on a whim, anywhere, anytime. Unfortunately, this is a recipe for social blunders. You know, the mistakes that your friends won’t stop reminding you about for weeks. Before you go, Google the artist, especially if they’re new in town. Is this a head-banging rock concert or a sophisticated evening of light jazz? Let the genre help you pick your attire and your attitude.

Plus-Ones Preferred

Spread the word, and make an event of it. Use this can’t-miss concert as a way to catch up with your pals, get to know the other folks in the office or surprise a special someone.

Keep It Classy

We know that you love your favorite drink. But keep it classy. No one wants to carry you home, and even fewer people still paid money to hear you singing along with the band.

Go Prepared

Make sure you have what you need for the evening. In addition to the basics, like your keys, your cell phone and a pair of shoes, you can actually walk in, take along the accessory you use to do what you do.

Modern-Day Party Do’s and Don’ts

People dancing at party
People dancing at party

It starts when you receive the invitation in the mail — either your computer’s Inbox or the one that your junk mail gets delivered to.

That complex social conundrum of being asked to a party.

Do you bring wine or beer? Is wine too pretentious? There’s always craft beer, or is that elitist? And what to wear? Is it a casual gathering or a dinner party where at least a sport coat is needed? Is it acceptable to add a plus-one, since you just started dating the potential man or woman of your dreams?

While modern-day society may no longer follow the social dictates of Emily Post’s rules of etiquette, there’s nothing like a soiree to throw many of us into an internal tailspin.

To help navigate the often frustratingly opaque rules of attending a party, be it cocktail, dinner or a child’s birthday, the following tips can help:

* Call to RSVP. The French may not have the corner on manners, but they do know that RSVPdepressed-alcoholic78479946-resized means respondezs’ilvous plait, or please reply. This is essential for the host to get an accurate headcount and not responding is considered rude and inconsiderate.

* Decode the dress code. Is it a formal affair in which tuxes and dresses are appropriate, or a more casual, anything goes party? If you’re unsure, it’s never inappropriate to ask the hostess. If it’s an All white party sha just wear all white!

* Go dateless. Unless specifically stated, it is considered rude to bring an uninvited guest or to ask if you can bring a plus-one. If you can bring a date, remember to RSVP for them, or conversely, if you accepted for your guest and plans change, let the host know that as well.

* Hold your liquor. While you may want to imbibe all the free-flowing alcohol, avoid drinking to excess. Nothing is more disrespectful and uncomfortable than a drunk party guest, particularly at more upscale affairs.

* Take what you need to feel comfortable. For some that’s a small bottle of aspirin to ward off a headache, a pair of more comfortable shoes discreetly hidden in the folds of a coat, an embroidered handkerchief rather than bulky tissue.

Yes, Love Is Patient, Kind and Cheap!

a couple holding hands walking into the sunlight

I’ve found something that many men do not understand. “Romance does not equal money.”

The men I’ve talked with have been frightened off by television and movies and believe that romance is something outside of their budget.

They are wrong.
When I think of the most romantic and breath-taking stories that my friends and I discuss over lunch, we don’t talk about flying off to Europe or drinking the most expensive champagne. The little things like holding hands, reading stories together, and lots of laughter are what we hold dear.

I’ve put together a list of ways to show love — without running up bill. And, ladies, this list is for you, too. Initiate the following ideas with your Sweetie, and show him how much you care. The ideas below are for men or women and fit every budget.

Ditch WhatsApp and leave some Love Notes in her hand bagfor her to find Leave

Wildlife – Go to Mukuvisi woodlands and watch the birds, the Zebras and the giraffe

Cooking –google a random  recipeand to make it together

Photos – When is the last time you had a photo taken together? What are you waiting for?

Work Date – Surprise your love with a lunch date.

Stroll – Leave the TV, phone and computer behind and go on a walk together in a very quiet road with less traffic

Entertainment – Go see a High School or College play or concert. It is affordable and fun!

Slow Dance – Turn on the radio and dance to the songs you fell in love listening to.

Volunteer – Choose a charity or cause that means something to both of you and work together to make the world a better place.

Love Story – Write how you met, fell in love, how you felt, what your thoughts were. You will treasure looking through these books over the years.

Love Grows – Plant a garden together. Herbs, vegetables, flowers, fruit — anything you both like.

Cheer – Go to a High School Sporting Event especially the Harare school boy rugby

Puzzles – Do a jigsaw or crossword puzzle together before you know it the hour hand would have completed more than 3 complete rotations

Wish List – Both make a wish list of things that make you happy and put them in order. Hugs, dates, gifts, time together, intimacy, etc. Then look at the lists. They may surprise you.

People Watch – Sit on a bench and watch people go by. Try to guess their stories.

So, although an occasional expensive dinner is nice, it is truly the day-to-day affection that builds romance and love.

Yes, Love is Patient , Kind — and Cheap!

Why We Pay Money to be Scared

Ghost-face-accessory-mask-largeIt’s why we get a rush when we see Jason take his axe to some unsuspecting teen in Friday the 13th or why we can’t seem to look away when Carrie, dripping with pig’s blood, incinerates her entire high-school class.

While mesmerising, to be sure, the real question is: why do we pay for the pleasure of being scared?

On this, there are various schools of thought.

Some believe that fans of horror (be it movies or books) don’t actually experience fear, but are excited instead, while others believe that people are willing to endure the terror because they know there is no real threat, that they are essentially safe.

Still others feel that moviegoers are willing to be scared in order to feel a sense of euphoric relief at the end.

Whatever the reason, movie production companies are counting on customers who are willing to pay to be petrified, by releasing horror flicks regularly like Night of the Demons. In the movie, three friends attend a party held in a mansion where, years prior, six people disappeared and the owner hung herself.

It seems people have a morbid fascination with the dark side, so even though a scary-movie-as-Smart-Object-1horror movie might be illogical on an intellectual level, people still like to be uncomfortable on an emotional level. It’s about people facing their fears we suppose.

Which makes sense and explains why many of us have (reluctantly) stuck our hand down the garbage disposal, just waiting for our fingers to brush up against something (or, perhaps, for the machine to turn on by itself, shredding the hand inside  or why we might refuse to put our leg out of the covers at night.

This too is why we tell ghost stories around the campfire and why we turn out for horror movies like they were giving away free popcorn.

It’s because we enjoy the pleasure of fear and we are willing to pay for it.

The Story Behind Hip Hop Drum Beats

0

Nowadays hip hop is more than just drum beats, producers also use baselines and melodies in order to make beats. But it all started with the drums, for which hip hop music is known the most. Disc jockeys used to sample and isolate drums from music tracks, mostly from soul and funk music, to make their own, new sound. This was popular in the 80’s, when people gathered together on block parties and used to dance on these new drum beats. Later on, the Djs started to scratch, put instrument sounds and vocals on their beats. The result was a new music genre named hip hop.

The hip hop music went through a lot of changes, but the drums are still the heart of this genre. Even big producers still work with drum machines and MPCs, like Kanye West for example. And the result is very tumblr_nmeeigkZAe1upkbyuo1_1280-as-Smart-Object-1good! It’s really amazing how something that simple can become and stay so popular and move so many people all around the globe! Now, rap artists come from everywhere, Germany, Russia or Japan…

Some people say hip hop is dead, or is going to die out soon. But I don’t think this is true. It has become an integral part of the music industry and it will be that way. Every year new hip hop artists come on the scene, and they are as successful as the artists in every other genre. If you are fascinated about music, like me, and especially about hip hop, you want to be part of this movement!

Either you are a rapper, singer, producer or you want to do it all yourself, there’s no better time to start making your own music than now! If you are rapping or singing, you need to practice, so you have your own style, and that’s the most important part. Start with freestyling over different instrumental beats, and then, when you’re ready to make your own song, look for beat selling pages, let’s take
beats4tracks.com as an example, here you can listen to samples and buy the instrumentals for an accordingly low price. If you want to produce your own beats, you should look for a good and easy to use beat making software, DUBturbo or Fruity Loops for example. You might want to read my other articles on how to make your own beats.

Just try it out! Get yourself a free demo or software if you’re not sure about paying money for a product, there’s plenty good software out there. Feel the vibe and let it inspire you, it’s really fun!

Artist Managers New Role Is Business Development

7,576

If you happen to be somebody working out a music career, Artist Management or Artist manager are not unfamiliar words to you.

In fact, it’s probably not far-fetched for you to be toying with the idea of seeking the services of an artist manager. The real good artist managers have impressive track records that include successes of now famous and rich names. You should know though, that artist managers’ role has evolved into one that now involves business development.

The New Role Of The Artist Manager

diddy4-640x448Like most things in the music industry, the artist manager’s role is quickly changing. The good old days had him mostly concerned with helping the fledgling artists, singers, songwriters or bands with whom he works, to secure a good record deal and then after the deal is finalized and is active, to serve as liaison between his artist and the label.

This sounds simple enough, but it’s not. Of course it’s an oversimplification. It’s no picnic getting the artists a record deal nor working with a label. This was, however the real essence of an artist manager’s role, at least for a large majority of them.

Today, that has changed. Their key role is different. They’re no longer concerned with getting the artists under their wings signed. Instead, they now should be concerned with developing and creating value for their artists and bands, as in “business development.”

While they continue to view their artists and bands as something for which they must build brand equity, such brand equity is not so much for leveraging it into a record deal, but leveraging it to create direct revenue units and build strategic partnerships where he again creates exposure and impact, (thus enhancing the brand equity) and revenues.

All that time spent mailing things and items out to people at the labels outfits, those meetings with the A&R people and all those hours spent fighting and arguing about marketing budgets and promotions and everything else, must now be concentrated on “business development”

The thing is … most artist managers are not fully prepared for business development. They’ve got no proper business training and through no fault of theirs will probably move about unsure, in a market where those without the requisite skills are punished. Some of these guys won’t make it. Some will be smart enough to learn the business fundamentals and will change the paradigm.

If you’re into pursuing your music career, as a singer or member of a band or a songwriter- composer, it would be good for you to understand this evolving role of an artist manager. Before you wind up with one, make sure he/she is coming from a reputable, results-oriented outfit that knows what’s happening with artist management.
