Government regrets the removal of the signage at J.M Nkomo Airport

Following a public outcry over the recent removal of the signage containing the Nguni shield at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, government has said it regrets the decision.

In a statement, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said Government has already gone to tender for the production of the new signage.

“The ministry regrets the hasty removal of the signage at JM Nkomo International Airport without notifying all stakeholders.

“The ministry takes pleasure in informing all stakeholders that we have already gone to tender for new signage that incorporates all stakeholder concerns. Wider consultations are ongoing on the best signage which will factor in regional sentiments and desires,” he said.

The Ndebele cultural shield (Nguni shield) was removed from the airport and replaced with the government’s Coat of Arms emblem.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development revealed that the change of signage was done by the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) as part of its mandate of ensuring proper signage at all airports to ICAO standards.

Applications Now Open For MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy Class of 2023

Aspiring and emerging young film-makers are being invited to apply for places in the fifth academic year of the MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy, which opens in October.

MultiChoice Zimbabwe publicity and public relations manager Liz Dziva said Zimbabweans keen on careers in the growing African film and television industry should see this as an opportunity to get a foothold in the industry as well as benefit from an unrivalled world-class, year-long training programme.

The MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy is a continental initiative launched in 2018 to provide a learning platform for aspiring film-makers across Africa, with physical academies in Lagos, Nairobi and Lusaka for west, east and southern African students selected for training.

“Entry is open to aspiring or and emerging filmmakers with industry experience or a relevant post-school qualification,” she said.

“They are applying for an exciting opportunity to develop and enhance their production skills with a curriculum that combines film studies such as directing, sound design, the business of film, among others, along with workplace experience on productions being created by M-Net.”

The fully-funded programme runs for 12 months and entry is open to candidates from southern, west and east African countries. Any Zimbabwean students selected will attend the Lusaka academy.

The three academy venues have new directors this year, including Atinuke Babatunde (west Africa hub), Victoria Goro (east Africa hub) and Christopher Puta (southern Africa hub).

Bringing 15 years’ experience in audio and video production to his new job, southern Africa academy director Christopher Puta believes that the growth of Africa’s film and TV industry starts with providing young people with the opportunity to produce quality content.

“By equipping students with what it takes to be world-class film and TV professionals, the MTF Academy programme is effectively raising the next generation of African storytellers and historians,” he said.

In addition to the practical training that all students will receive as part of the programme, they will also enjoy an enhanced training experience from MTF Academy partnerships, which include those of the New York Film Academy, the Henley Business School in the United Kingdom, Dolby and Canon.

Previous student years have also enjoyed working with the United Nations’ Verified campaign and have created projects for Partners Against Piracy as well as for Creative Development, the latter on a climate change campaign.

“Zimbabweans have featured in each of the previous four academic years and we hope for a good number of applications for this fifth year, as well as for a renewed Zimbabwean presence in the coming academic year,” said Ms Dziva.

Applications for entry are already being accepted and the entry deadline is Friday June 3. Application is made only through https://cte.multichoicetalentfactory.com/

Edgars showcases Fashion Range at the Castle Tankard Horse Race

Fashion has always been an integral part of horse racing, simply put Haute couture and horses simply seem to go hand-in-hand.

And with different themes for different races, the Castle Tankard Horse Race theme is usually the Castle Lager colours and red dominates among the guests.

It’s not surprising, then, that designers might assume that a race day would provide good exposure for their designs.

In many instances, elite race days are a good opportunity for designers to reveal their new ranges. This is certainly the case for horse races held in most parts of the world each year.

Here, racing and fashion vie for honors, with some believing that the occasion is as much of a fashion event as it is a horse racing tournament.

Fashion choices have always piqued the interest of the general public and this year Edgars Zimbabwe showcased some of the clothes at their stores.

Among the models were beauty Queens like Belinda Potts, Hilda Mabu among others.

Speaking to Zimbuzz Edgars Marketing Manager Tatenda John Mafarachisi said they were excited about the return of the Castle Tankard horse race.

“The Castle Tankard horse race is an iconic part of every Zimbabwean and it was with great anticipation that it resumed for the year 2022.

“Edgars Stores Limited enjoys a long-standing collaborative relationship with Delta Beverages and so it was only natural that we support [them] in celebrating 60 years of the Tankard,” he said.

Mafarachisi also said the two companies – Castle and Edgars enjoy cordial relationships hence the collaboration.

“The Castle and Edgars brands have a number of meeting points, including an overlapping customer base, nationwide footprint, and giving back to the communities we operate in,” he added.

He said the popular Fashion Extravaganza will be making a comeback after a long time on the sidelines due to lockdowns and the covid pandemic.

“Similar to the Castle Tankard, our Fashion Extravaganza [promotion] and other instore activations are making a bigger comeback as we continue to recover from the Covid-19 slump.”

Zimbabwean runner wins 42KM marathon, Gets Disqualified

Zimbabwean runner Isaac Mpofu on Sunday forfeited R50 000 in prize money during the Durban International Marathon for having one licence number.

The 42.2km run was won by Mpofu in 2:10:04 but there was drama as he was about to be declared the winner.

Mpofu’s World Championships qualification hangs in the balance after the disqualification.

The qualifying time for the men’s World Athletics Championships qualification that is due to take place from July 15 to July 24 in Oregon, United States, is 2 hours 11 minutes 30 seconds.

Mpofu had one licence number which was placed in front his vest and nothing on the back of his shirt at the finish line.

According to Athletics South Africa (ASA), Mpofu had to be disqualified and forfeit the R50 000 prize money, as per the rules.

ASA said the rules are clear that the participants of the Durban International Marathon had to have two license numbers on the day.

South African runner Tumelo Motlagale was declared the winner after he came in second behind Mpofu having clocked 2:11:15.

Mudiwa Hood and Trevor D’s Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Mudiwa Hood and Trevor Dongo have decided to drop visuals for their 2019 tender-hearted dedication to all mothers.

Amai Vakandirera is a song we fell in love with instantly and as Zimbuzz we wrote a review of it in July of the same year.

Shot in a rural setting, the video takes us through the realities that most grew up in, but it puts a spotlight on one particular thing – Mothers always appreciate the little that their children do.

With a wheelbarrow, a bar of green soap, and a bag of mealie meal, Mudiwa present the gifts to his on-set mother, and she thanks him like he has just dropped a bunch of car keys at her feet, such are African mums.

The emotion on both their faces is highlighted effortlessly giving out such an emotional scene.

But not everyone still has their mothers with them and that angle is shown with a solo Trevor Dongo narrating the story both in words and action, seated in the lone homestead belting out words of gratitude to the late mothers.

The fact is further amplified by a cemetery scene where the two take turns to reminisce the days the mom was still on earth but also alive to the fact that her works and sacrifices live on.

What better day than drop the song on Mothers Day and it doesn’t sound like a 3-year-old song at all.

Raza leads spirited chase but Zimbabwe XI fall short in second T20

Sikandar Raza played a brilliant innings of 82 as he spearheaded a spirited fightback by Zimbabwe XI after South Africa A had run up a huge total of 224 for four wickets in the third T20 match between the teams at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.

After the tourists won the toss and opted to bat first, the home side were under the cosh right from the first over, bowled by the usually economical Wellington Masakadza to Lesiba Ngoepe, who hit him for three fours immediately.

Then when Tanaka Chivanga came on, Reeza Hendricks took care of him with a four and a six, as well as three singles in that over.

Fours flowed so readily that after seven overs the South Africans had already reached 84 runs without losing a wicket.

After this, the Zimbabweans were able to put their field back and contain the carnage to an extent, until in the 13th over Hendricks, after hitting Masuku for two successive sixes, went for another big hit and skyed a catch on the leg side.

He had scored 77 off only 35 balls, with four sixes and nine fours, and the score was 142 for one wicket.

Wihan Lubbe did not last long, making 10 off eight balls before he was caught off a leg-side hit from Sikandar Raza at 163 for two in the 15th over.

Heinrich Klaasen came and went for three off six balls, another leg-side catch removing him off the bowling of Tendai Chatara.

Ngoepe now went into overdrive and, after hitting Masuku for a six and four off consecutive balls, reached a brilliant century off only 57 balls.

The score raced past 200, and Ngoepe survived until the final ball of the innings, when he was caught in the deep off another big hit for 114, scored off 63 balls with five sixes and 13 fours.

Tristan Stubbs was not out with 17 off nine balls, and the final total was a massive 224 for four wickets off the 20 overs.

The four wickets that fell were divided among Chatara, Chivanga, Masuku and Raza, but all the Zimbabwean bowlers went for at least nine runs an over.

Chasing such a challenging total, Zimbabwe XI their work cut out, but wickets soon fell.Takudzwanashe Kaitano was out for one in the first over, as he drove Bjorn Fortuin for a simple catch to mid-off.

Wessly Madhevere was caught in the deep from a big hit off Lizaad Williams for 19 off 11 balls, while Craig Ervine edged the same bowler to the keeper for 14 to make the score 34 for three after four overs.

Raza and Tino Mutombodzi came out hitting and the team fifty was achieved in the sixth over.

Mutombodzi faced eight balls for 13 runs and was caught in the deep off Gerald Coetzee at 57 for four in the following over.

After 10 overs, the score was 81 for four, with Raza and Ryan Burl together.

Raza in particular hit out brilliantly, reaching his fifty off only 30 balls in a sequence of four successive sixes off Jason Smith – 28 runs came off that over.

Burl, with less of the bowling, did his bit with 30 off 16 balls before falling to a catch at deep midwicket off Coetzee.

The pair had added 83 in seven overs, taking the score to 140 for five in the 14th over.

With Richmond Mutumbami as his next partner, Raza continued to hit brilliantly, and he blasted Hendricks for two successive sixes before playing the third delivery on to his stumps.

His score was 82 off 42 balls, and he hit no fewer than nine sixes and two fours – the score was now 171 for six in the 16th over.

Mutumbami miscued a stroke to be caught for 12, while Masakadza was caught for eight and Masuku yorked for 10, the score now being 195 for nine with five balls to come.

The last man, Chivanga, sliced a four past third man and then took a single to bring up the 200, quite an achievement.

The score at the close was 202 for nine wickets, giving South Africa A victory by 22 runs.

Of the bowlers, Williams took three for 38, while there were two wickets each for Fortuin and Coetzee.
