Takura Readies for Relationship Goals 2

Singers helping other singers get their big break into the music business is both desirable and valuable, so when singer-songwriter Takura Shonhai gave his input to the current DStv talent show Old Mutual Amazing Voices, there was more than a measure of gratefulness among the contestants.

He’s a popular hip-hop performer, but he regards himself as versatile in terms of his spread of styles.

“I don’t like to box myself in,” he said.

“I’ve done hip-hop, I’ve done Afro-pop and I’ve done Afro-swing, a sound that is almost like dancehall. I feel I can do anything. Right now I’m working on different projects with very different sounds from everything that people have heard before. So I’m just a versatile artiste who is not afraid to try new things and learn.”

He joined forces with the organisers of Old Mutual Amazing Voices to be one of the selectors, identifying the most suitable candidates to take part in the show, which is now running on Zambezi Magic channel on DStv, in the 5pm time slot each Sunday.

“My experience was great because it’s something I have only done at a much smaller scale,” he said.

“This time it was all very professional and i enjoyed it. I enjoyed meeting all the entrants and giving of my experience in pursuit of their success. I actually learnt a lot, too.”

Takura believes it is important for Zimbabweans to take up the opportunities that come from platforms such as MultiChoice .

“It opens doors for you and helps you improve. It’s something that opens our minds and we learn from it. It will help our industry to grow,” he said.

He felt Zimbabweans could learn a lot through television, especially reality shows like Old Mutual Amazing Voices.

“Reality TV is something that people love to watch, as we have seen with Idols and similar shows. They give hope and inspiration because they are real.

I have been in  competitions such as Idols before and when you see someone else go in for it, you say: ‘I can do it.’ It gives young people hope that they can go out and pursue their dreams.”

Takura is a busy performer and is at present working on his Relationship Goals 2 album.

“We did the first one two years ago, the one with the song Mai Mwana, so we  are doing a second one and it’s going to have five songs.

It’s going be a whole new side of me, something that people have never even imagined that they could ever see from me. So I’m pretty excited about that.”

Not content with being a performer, he sees himself as a mentor for others.

“I know things when it comes to music. I’m a person who learns a lot. I learn a lot from everyone I came into contact with, whether they are in the industry or not.

I’ve been through a lot in life. I left home when I was 14 years old to go to South Africa on my own. That kind of struggle builds character,” he said.

“So I’ve gone through a lot in my life and I never used to understand why, until I became a performer and I realised that God has a purpose for me.

I’m one of those people who love mentoring upcoming artistes and performers, even if it’s nothing to do with music. I love teaching and I hope anyone listening to my music will find it motivational.

“I’m always trying to help. I love giving advice and I feel that when I do it through music people hear this advice, because sometimes I can say something to people and I just know they hear it. I love helping people as a mentor.

I know I must work hard and so must the other performers coming through.”

In his album Stripped he talked about life and what he goes through on a day-to-day basis.

When I first came into the industry I was introducing myself. Now I am talking about my past and about where I am trying to go. I would like to do Stripped 2, probably in 2020. Most of my music is about real things that go on in my life, love or whatever.”

Dimitri & The Scarecrow release Crass Roots album

Dimitri and The Scarecrow is a Zimbabwean Hip-Hop musical concept created by Dimitri D. Kwenda (Rapper, Songwriter, Producer, Poet and Singer) migrating through different cities in Africa.

It is the juxtaposition of African Suburbia and it’s Scarecrow – The faceless bodies which are the fodder of human iniquity.

With an introspective vulnerability applied in the approach toward avarice, lust, pride, ignorance, flippancy and lies, Dimitri & The Scarecrow churns out perspectives based on observation and analysis.

The concept born in 2008 is shadowed by years of exposure to the Hip-Hop
Culture from the age of 10 thanks to a primary school friend.

He has been active on the African Hip-Hop scene since 2012 having its beginning at the now-closed BookCafe in Harare.

Dimitri & The Scarecrow has since released two 7 track EPs and a couple of singles
with major performance credits/appearances at The Afrikan Hip-Hop Caravan, Grahams Town Counter Festival, Harare International Festival of The Arts,
Shoko Festival and intimate venues in Dublin, Kampala & Cape Town.

Crass Roots Rap: Why Crass Roots Rap?

At the core of art there is a point of view which is unapologetically reflective of our environment.

The beauty of art lies within subjective interpretation yet, one's interpretation reflects the character based on their perspective.

Crass (definition) – (of persons) so unrefined as to be lacking in discrimination and sensibility.

It is of profound consequence that Hip-Hop as a culture is one which has never sat well with an elitist mind-set because of its radical nature on championing
the downtrodden cause.

Long since surpassing all musical genres in its reaches, there is always a
push-back from authorities and some would even state, sabotage through a watering down of the culture.

Compositions on this particular project reflect an evolving mind-set yet one which still
remains astute in its defiance to being funnelled through the narrow passage of acceptance.

Politicians often assume the mantle of heroism whilst demonising anything or anyone posing a threat to their ambition.

Africa has known an older generation which has smothered the next to lengthen their prime which is past.

Teemak Promotions Identifies New Talent

Acting on his promise to uplift the local showbiz industry by supporting new talent, TeeMak Promotions CEO Oswald TeeMak has identified a new addition to his label.

A few weeks ago TeeMak made a call on his Facebook page for people to nominate and help him pick out fresh talent that he could support with his vast resources.

Of the musicians that were recommended it was RnB artist Takue real name Takudzwa Ncube whose star shone the brightest and caught the eye of TeeMak promotions.

Takue who already has a single out on Youtube titled My Lover is a raw talent that TeeMak would like to work with.

This brings to two, the number of Artists under TeeMak promotions following the unveiling of Dancehall star Enzo Ishall in January.

“We were looking for someone with a unique style and voice but yet versatile and I think Takue fit that mold,” said TeeMak.

“He is talented, young and ambitious and we think with the right support, we can unearth another gem from Zimbabwe.”

Takue

Takue is the voice behind the Youtube soundtrack Baba NaMai Bb – Life After Divorce, A story by Thomas Chizhanje and many are already fond of his voice and music.

Takue couldn’t contain his excitement when TeeMak broke the news to him.

“This is a big opportunity for me and I am looking forward to putting in the hard work to repay the faith TeeMak Promotions have shown in me,” He said.

“Music is something that I Iove with all my heart, it’s more than just a passion, it’s my life and as musicians, we lack the necessary financial backing to take our art to the same levels as our regional and international peers and with this deal, I’m sure that’s going to change.”

Takue will begin his new relationship with TeeMak promotions with the release of single later on this March accompanied by a video. Other projects by Takue will be released during the course of the year.

The two parties are expected to officially sign the agreement this February.

SA Based Zimbabwean artist Frya drops new single Sammy Sosa

South African Based Zimbabwean artist Frya dropped her video for the single Sammy Sosa and we are loving it.

It has a lot of colour, dance and food!

The song was produced by superstar producer Mr Kamera who did his magic with his signature touch. And he makes a cameo in the video!

It is a groovy tune with a Zimbabwean Sizzle named after her favorite baseball player Sammy Sosa. With lots of baseball references in the song, a pedestal for a Feisty year ahead!

Faraii Releases Single Dedicated To African Queens

Recording artist Faraii, has released his first single of the year titled Uthando (Zulu for love).

The young Zimbabwean artist roped in South African singer-songwriter Lindo Summer (The Voice SA Season 2 Top 16) and Botswana rapper One Take to create a feel-good song appreciating the queens all over the African continent.

The mid-tempo Afrocentric vibe coupled with seamless Shona, Zulu and English lines will either have you singing along, dancing along, or most probably both.

Faraii, who was born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa, and currently based in Botswana decided to bring together artists from these countries to show the beauty in collaboration and that a common passion can bring different people together.

Premised on the backdrop of black women holding the crowns of 5 major beauty pageants, it made sense to dedicate the love song to the women who have been for too long been overlooked in society.

“The song took quite some time to make and release, but it was definitely worth it. This is by far my favourite song to date, and I am glad you finally get to hear it.

Dear African Queen, this one is for you. Fellas don’t be afraid to dedicate this to your significant other,” said Faraii.

The single is available for streaming and download here

“I want to tell my city a little story about my music journey, with God my hunger for success is close, basically this is my year to shine, going crazy with my hustle”, chuckled Dweezy.

“More maturity in my content, beat selection, the whole production is different, I’m doing global music now,” he added.

Lil Dizzie is not new in the Zimbabwe music circles having previously worked with Brythreesixty.

Zimbuzz managed to get hold of Lil Dizzie and he said, working with Zimbabwean artists has helped his music to get recognition in the country.

“Whenever I get to be on a vibe, I always get another call for a collaboration, it also improves my music skills which makes me a versatile artist,” he said.

The single is a unique head bumping sound with a feel of trap and hip hop;Lil Dizzie handled the chorus/hook whilst Calvin blended in well with his Luveve swag.

NAMA 2020 Nominees Statement

Chairperson of the NAMA Adjudication Panel Prof. Ruby Magosvongwe has released a statement to outline their findings in the nominations as well as explaining some decisions the panel made.

Below is the full statement

The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) is delighted to announce the nominees for the 19th National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) which will be held on Saturday 29 February 2020 at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

A total of 1290 entries were received at the close of the nomination period and thereafter a panel of independent adjudicators was appointed to preside over all the submissions. Over the past 2 months, using pre-determined criteria, these adjudicators have been engaged in a rigorous judging process.

This process was based on submitted entries as well as those identified by individual and institutional monitors appointed to track excelling artists throughout the year. These adjudicators who are seasoned and highly professional in various genres adjudged the entries submitted and only works that were produced between 1st December 2018 to 30thNovember 2019 were judged.

For the 19th NAMA council is pleased to unveil two new categories of awards:

(1) Outstanding Poetry Book and
(2) Outstanding New Comer in Music

These awards are in response to industry needs and their introduction follows sector-wide consultations.

Turning to the submissions, the adjudicators noted that there was a lot of artistic depth in the entries submitted across all disciplines.

The adjudicators also witnessed that in some areas like theatre and film, there was high competitiveness as artists were pushing the bar to produce quality projects. The artists were also commended for a lot of originality and innovation exhibited in the entries submitted for the awards.

The judges also observed the following:

In the visual arts, challenges were observed in some of the entries that depicted poor picture quality, evidence that lowlevel cameras were used for the filming. This unfortunately made it difficult for the adjudicators to asses the quality of the work produced.
There was a marked increase in spoken word, theatre, literary arts and Film entries.
Entries in the Film segment were of a very high standard and most of them are of a global competitive nature.
In dance, the entries submitted showed a lack of seriousness and the adjudicators noted that there were no significant appropriate dance productions that were submitted. A number of the works submitted in this category were not well packaged.

The NACZ would at this juncture like to stretch its gratitude to all artists, production houses, producers, media houses, promoters, creative stables, arts organisations and institutions and all those who submitted entries for the 19th Edition of NAMA for making the process successful.

The council values this participation for it keeps the NAMA brand alive.

NAMA is a platform of the NACZ to recognize outstanding achievements within the creative sector.

The awards aim to encourage creativity and excellence in the quality of the arts enabling the sector to contribute positively towards the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Zimbabwe.

The awards also seek to inspire artists to strive for higher and original forms of creativity whilstproviding an opportunity for arts disciplines to jointly market and publicize the sector locally, regionally and internationally.

In conclusion, it is important to note that as the submissions for the 19th NAMA closed on 30thNovember 2019, the submissions for the 20th NAMA edition immediately opened.

All works of art produced after the 1st of December 2019 are eligible for consideration and nomination forms are available at the designated points. Those not nominated still have a chance be winners in 2021

‘Winky D did Not Submit for the Awards’ — Star FM

Organisers of the Star FM Music Awards have responded to the wide growing concerns expressed by music fans following the release of the nominations.

Fans, critics and musicians alike were quick to notice something unusual on the 2020 nomination list, chief among them the absence of a Sungura category as well as Winky D and Gemma’s hit single Mugarden was missing from the Song of the Year nomination.

General manager of the Zimpapers Radio Broadcasting Division, under which Star FM falls, Mr. Comfort Mbofana said that despite calls for entries and an extension of the entries deadline, some artists were not forthcoming.

“We approached all artists including Winky D (through his management) who we deemed eligible for this year’s award process and asked them to submit their entries,” he said.

“We even facilitated resources at the station to assist in the submission processes.

“We had a good number of artists enter the awards and we had some who —for reasons best known to themselves — would not enter, “he said.

However, Zimbuzz investigations revealed that the Submission Website was not working most of the time and this resulted in some artists getting frustrated with the technology thereby deciding not to submit.

We, however, can not confirm this to be the main or sole reason why some artists did not submit.

Turning to the Sungura Category, Mr. Mbofana said there were no entries.

“It was also unfortunate that there were no entries for the Best Sungura Song category and we could not manufacture entries if there were none,” he added.

Another bone of contention was that artists should not be made to submit for Awards when they already submit their songs for airplay.

Artists and fans were arguing that the Station should use music and statistics from their library to determine nominations.

“There have been concerns raised about the submission requirement with some asking why artists have to enter themselves into an awards process,” quizzed Mr. Mbofana

“We looked at other music awards in the region and internationally and there is a universal requirement for the artists to enter the awards process by submitting their music for adjudication.”

Zimbuzz can also confirm that this is a standard requirement in most music Awards. In the region, we looked at how the Metro FM awards are done since these are directly related to Star FM as both are Radio Station Awards.

For one to enter into the Metro FM awards an artist is required to submit their entry. However, Metro FM has not held an Award ceremony for the past two years.

The Star FM Music Awards event will be held on the 22nd of February 2020 at Manna Resort in Glen Lorne and attendance is by invite.

The real Enzo is Back and Glowing!!

Enzo Ishall dropped ‘Uri kutsvireiko’ and I LoVE it. You wouldn’t think so because I have been a bit harsh on the guy lately.

I listened to the so-called freestyle first and I must say this is the Enzo I fell in love with the way he uses street jargon to get his point across.

His point this time being if you don’t get anything sweet from what you are drinking then why drink at all.

Its a question I have often asked those Kale lovers who move around with transparent bottles of goo touting how deliciously soothing it is.

Anyhow, Enzo. The Video is a work of art it allows us to focus on that increasingly yummy Dancehall artist.

I mean come on ladies Enzo is glowing up. The yellow brings out his perfect dark skin and the tinted dreadlocks like Justin Bieber said…Yummy.

It also shows us how in tune he is with his none verbal cues, he gesticulates in a manner that backs up his lyrics so you don’t get lost.

This might be by far the most organised freestyle I’ve seen in a while it even has a hook Well done Enzo I still don’t forgive you for Highest score though…,
