Dancehall singer Slicker 1 releases a collabo with Marvin Priest

Australian based dancehall artist Farai Larry Makombe popularly known as Slicker 1 has been featured on by Marvin Priest on a collaboration titled Tequila.

The song will be available on Marvin’s album.

Marvin Priest is a British-Jamaican artist and is the son of legendary reggae singer Maxi Priest.

Marvin has covered many genres of music including reggae and pop music and started his career in 2008 performing with his father around the world. He found his first break signing to Island/Universal records and in 2011 released his debut pop studio album, Beats and Blips.

Explaining how the collaboration came about, Slicker tracked it back to 2016.

“We linked up in 2016 when Marvin came on tour with his father Maxi Priest and I was one of the opening acts,” he explained.

“After the show, backstage we did some freestyles and instantly connected, I gave him a copy of my first official debut album and he was impressed with the body of work and we planned to work together in the future.

“So when the time came when he needed to feature someone he then hit me up with the Tequila demo and he explained to me the vibes, it was easy to jump on because it was a great record,” he added.

He said the song Tequila was a party jam since all of us like to let loose sometimes after a day of hard work.

Slicker 1 who grew up in Highfield in Harare before moving to Australia recorded his first reggae song in 2014 called Shingirira and the song would shape his reggae-dancehall career.

He has since collaborated and worked with Dizzy Dee, Amac Don as well as artists from South Africa, Jamaica, Australia, USA, Canada, UK, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Sudan.

He has of late recorded a song with multi-award-winning star Freeman.

Turning to what inspires him to write music Slicker1 said as an artist he draws inspiration from nature, surroundings, memories, emotions, books, and the life struggles

“I try and tackle all topics of interest in life from party songs like Tequila and Paita Party to deeper meaningful and motivational songs like “believe” and Shingirira,” he said.

As part of the promo, Zimbabwean celebrity dance choreographer John Cole will run a #Tequila dance challenge on his social media platforms

#ZimHipHop — Mid-Year Review Catch up

It’s been a challenging year so far due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic but it has also been a memorable one in the Zim Hip Hop culture.

2020 has been plenty for rappers like Asaph, Ti Gonzi, and Crooger who have invaded the scene by force (zveGinde).

Apart from loving music, Zim Hip Hop has a distinctive affection and energy that gives a holistic reflection of the urban lifestyle.

For a major part of this year’s first half, Asaph is undeniably amongst the biggest winners.

His verses on top-performing hits like Monate Fela, Ginde and his single Like So have helped the rapper navigate streets beyond Bulawayo.

Cal Vin hasn’t quit echoing Majaivana’s exhortations. The rapper continues to ride on the tribalism wave emulating the former’s narrative.

His latest release Wish I was A (Shona) captured the rapper’s frustrations as he tries to break through the language barriers he also recently dropped his 2020 mixtape titled 80’s baby.

Crooger, Ti Gonzi and R Peels are also the top names this year with decent hits dominating the genre’s charts.

Reigning NAMA Best Male artist Ti Gonzi although he has been embroiled in some controversy with producers (Marz) and his own management is almost done with his 2020 album and the streets are looking forward to the drop.

In a reverse of events, R Peels said Eke (pardon me) and disassociated his controversial self from the music to chase the greens with his album coming in August.

A commercial endeavor that is backed up by 3 decent hits this year Landlord, Eke and Andiroya.

We have had 2 heavily subscribed challenges #ginde and #eke this year and these initiatives are keeping hip hop alive.

Of interest is how Gze went hard on Eke challenge dropping bars and adding visuals to ascertain he is indeed a godfather in this culture.

Last year’s biggest award winner King 98 continues to grow by leaps and bounds, his regional moves have been a blessing to the growth of the culture.

His release with Diamond Platnumz broke all records by reaching 2 million Youtube views in 48 hours.

Mclyne Beats is another special talent on the scene, recently joined forces with Mastermind Records in his new home South Africa.

Likewise, Mclyne sent us some returns from supposedly greener pastures down south by dropping an EP Formula rich with comic and stoner bars.

For the sake of giving an update this compilation won’t dwell much on reviewing the endless works put in by rappers this year.

An annual cry over femcees not being consistent remains in 2020 despite new voices registering some presence.

Nova Bleq from the East (Mutare) is an exciting prospect with deeply written lyrics in her raps.

Natasha Muz is doing much on the commercial path with collaborations featuring dancehall star Hwinza adding on to her few singles this year.

Reigning Best Female star Phreshy dropped an RnB influenced jam titled Online sometime in May.

Black Bird who strictly adheres to authentic cultural Zimbabwean hip hop in her tracks has returned on the scene as well and do check out her new EP.

Multi Award-winning hip hop artist Trae Yung came through on the Candlelight Riddim addressing the love subject in her new song with the same title Candlelight.

Indigo Saint and Jungle Loco who have assumed the tag ‘underground’ brought us albums worth giving ample time to digest because of their well-roundedness.

The ghetto seems to be alive in hip hop especially with the emergence of up and coming chanters like Tanto Wavie, Saidi and Dough Major who are so powerful in storytelling ghetto chronicles.

Tanto Wavie’s album Wavie 2 is now available on digital platforms. Kae Chaps dropped an EP Pretty Short Life and has announced his debut album Vanga yet to drop.

Features on Pungwe Sessions, a star-studded line up on the album proved Michael Chiunda and SokoMatemai are forces to reckon with, and the year 2020 has so far brought fortune to their careers.

The culture is growing and more Zim Hip Hop songs continue to dominate the local music industry.

And today Blacperl dropped her new single titled Coulda Ka , look out for a Zimbuzz review by end of day

Trae Yung & Wadiwa Music tackle troubled Love in Candlelight

Candles are commonly used in two or more ways; create light to see, set a romantic mood, or both.

But what do you do when the light and the romance in your love life dim?

Multi Award-winning hip hop artist Trae Yung addresses this love subject in her new song titled Candlelight.

Taken off the recently dropped Candle Light Riddim by Hit Music Empire, Trae Yung sings of a conflicted heart that wants to stay in a loveless relationship but at the same time, she wanna leave.

She sings of the confusion that comes with wanting to quit ..”I think its time to let you go bae where did the love go..” but the good memories of what was once a blossoming love wants you to stay…“i really wanna stay but hauchandi treater bhoo”

Featuring Mudiwa Musiq on the hooks, the two engage in a mental conversation before the breakup with both expressing their fears.. “even though it hurts i just wanna keep the candlelight burning..”

The exchange between the two singers gives this effect of a couple that is trusting their relationship is simply twisted, but not totally broken.

The two of them realize that they would prefer not to abandon one another, so they’re searching for a sign that things will be alright at long last.

Not only are the lyrics easily digestible, Trae Yung and Wadiwa Musiq’s voices are absolutely stunning. The song is bound to give you chills.

REVIEW: I won’t Succumb to Peer Pressure – Crooger reveals in new Song

From mabroke niggas anonzwisa hasha to I don’t wanna look rich the lyrical resemblance of Crooger’s growth not only as a rapper but a graduate of the street hustles is evident

The current crop of emcees seems to have grasped a bounce that relates more to the current socio-economic dynamics.

Of late, Crooger’s catalogue has been full of inspirational vibes that carry a lot of motivation.

Music transcends beyond the dancefloor and radio hits. Peer pressure is the latest track by the award-winning rapper which takes off the same ambition preached in his previous songs life iyi and musandiudziure.

Peer pressure is a message inspired by Shumba’s experiences with friends, neighborhood and the industry at large.

On many occasions Crooger has rapped more about being a lone-ranger whose only focus is on the guala – my only competition is the man in the mirror.

Peer pressure is a common phrase because we have been told about it on countless occasions – this internet age vanhu vakawanda varikurarama hupenyu huri fake is how Crooger relays it in the track.

Must also be acknowledged how the chanter continues to refine his wordplay. Crooger reminisces further to the day he came into life which may appear simple but a deeper appreciation of that symbol brings out remarkable relevance – pandakazvarwanaMAIvangundakazvarwandega.

The worthiness of the hustle is brought in question when he exclaims – lost the woman of my dreams wasn’t giving her the attention she needed.

The emotional provocation is an indicator of how life can be messy but one should never succumb to peer pressure nonetheless.

It has been indeed long overdue before we started acknowledging the motivation carried in Crooger’s music. That’s the lane!

Kilamani tackles social ills in Mutorori

Mutorori by Kilamani is perfectly primed for the dance floor, yet tackling social issues as diverse as drug abuse, peddling the word of God, prostitution and witchcraft.

Born Clemence Kilamani Mamvura the Kwekwe-bred dancehall star sings his heart out in this new jam that is already enjoying massive rotation on national radio.

Emerging on the scene first in 2012 when he dropped his studio album titled Nyama Yenyama Yangu produced by Adelaide Hoodstar Sitandi, Kilamani hopes to continue on the same pedestal.

Working with certified hitmaker producer Dj Fydale has provided him with a different vibe to his style, although he has worked with other big-name producers such as T Man, Samcris, Cashlibs, and Alvan K.

“I was involved in music at a young age. I started singing in the church choir as well as the School choir,” said Kilamani

“I started creating my own songs at the age of 14 and I was inspired by Decibel.”

Like many of his peers from outside Harare, he bemoans the shunning of artists from the small cities by both promoters and radio stations.

“My musical journey has not been an easy road due to lack of funding and also most of the promoters focus on those who have bigger names already,” he said.
